Best area for budget hotel near NYC

The neward thread got me thinking. I was planning on getting a hotel near Newark that was $100/night for an upcoming girls trip. Is there somewhere better to stay with good transportation to NYC and nice accomodations?

We'll be there for 3 nights and spending all of our time in NYC. 2-4 women

I would want to be closer to the city if that's where you are spending your time. We stayed at Comfort Inn (near the convention center) for a dental meeting. It was within walking distance of everything we wanted to do Times Square, Broadway show, Ellis Island. It was small (typical for NYC) but clean and offered a free breakfast which was actually quite good. I think we paid $130.00 a night. When my girlfriends and I went we all stayed at the Waldorf and split the room 4 ways, it was a much larger room. They were offering a special Big Apple Weekend deal.

I think Weehawken, Jersey City, or Secaucus would be much better bets. I believe you can take the PATH and ferry from Weehawken and Jersey City, and the bus from Secaucus.
