Can anyone tell me where to get a decent steak? Not a signature restaurant?

I'm watching this thread, too! I wish a signature dinner was in our budget, but it's not. My dad would love a good steak for his anniversary dinner, though.

Coral Reef gets a lot of mixed reviews, but I had an excellent New Strip Steak dinner there last year. It was tender, juicy, and flavorful (Loved it). I will say that the first time we ate at Coral Reef in 2012, it was not very good. I had the steak then also. For some reason we decided to go back and give it another try. We have eaten there 3 more times since then and it was good each time. We would eat there again. I will also mention they have a Bailey's & Jack Daniels Chocolate Mousse Dessert that is very good also.

I really like the New York strip and fish at Rose and crown. I also enjoyed my steak at be our guest.

Places where I have had a decent steak that are not a signature.
  • Coral Reef: I actually enjoyed this steak better than I did a few days earlier that year at Le Cellier
  • Captains Grill: I was shocked. I actually liked this steak also better than the one at Le Cellier that year.
  • Grand Floridian Cafe: Anther pleasant surprise.
  • Whispering Canyon Cafe: I didn't order it, my DD did. But I did take a couple of bites and it was very good.

I'll second Rusty's vote for Bull & Bear. We eat there probably once a month (going to be twice this month) and the steak is great. Its a short drive in the Bonnet Creek area, technically off property, but very close.

TREX...has excellent food, one of our favorites for many dishes.
Turf Club
Olivias

1) The Turf Club does have some good dishes.
2) But, the postage-stamp-size of the portions have many leaving hungry.
3) Olivia's is good for sandwiches and light-fare, but not that great for steaks.

Our Recommendations:
. . . appys:... French Onion Soup
. . . entree:.. Lamb Chops
. . . dessert:. Warm Seasonal Fruit Crisp ala Mode
.
NOTE1: The Turf Club is a bar-eatery inside SSR. It is somewhat small, but is OK because it gets few guests. The dinner entrées are small and overpriced. (C'mon, pasta with shrimp for $20 ?) We were displeased with the rubber chicken and dry steaks. Working at SSR, did not change my mind. We were part of the pre-opening tasting and most of us were not happy about the offerings - our opinions have been right on ever since. We prefer to make a meal of the appys and desserts, which are quite good and nicely priced. The peach cobbler was only OK. The peaches came out HARD. Tobi (SERVER) said they have had other complaints. My reply was, "Is the chef doing anything about it?" She just shrugged. I know many of the wait staff, and was lucky enough to get Tobi, she is pleasant and attentive. Open for dinner only, no longer for lunch.
.
NOTE2: The poor reputation of Turf Club has really kept the revenues down. When we CM's had the tasting menu prior to opening, we even commented on the average-to-below-average food quality. Lately, however, they have been trying to upgrade the menu items. The pork Tenderloin is getting good reviews, as the Lamb Chops. We thought they were good, but not spectacular. Turf Club has made major strides in food quality. But the small portions will keep patrons away.
.
NOTE3: The portions are small, even called miniscule. If you have a big-eater in the group, eat before your meal or stop at Artist Palette when you leave. Of course, you can always fill up on the rolls with the yummy Hawaiian Sea Salt Sprinkles.

Our Recommendations:
. . . appys:... Sunrise Platter (bfast), Conch Fritters (lunch/dinner)
. . . entree:.. Seafood Omelet (bfast), Pulled Pork Sandwich (lunch/dinner)
. . . dessert:. Key Lime Tart (lunch/dinner)
.
NOTE: It is somewhat inconvenient to drive or take a bus to OKW. The food uniqueness used to be lovely, but DDP has forced the eatery to slip greatly from the unique to ordinary. Although pleasant in the surroundings department, the food remains above average for lunch and dinner, but breakfast is really good and reasonably priced and well worth the visit. Try the Seafood Omelet, truly yummy. The Duval Street Burger is decent, but stay away from steaks, which are frequently tough and/or dry. Arguably the best pulled pork sandwich on the WDW property. The club sandwich is always tasty. Chowder was too spicy for our "chowder purist" taste. However, they have THE BEST key lime tart on the property. The lunch and diner are basically the same, except for minor dinner entrée differences.

To each their own. If you don't have a car, resort hopping can be time comsuming. We have a car, so its easy to eat everywhere in Disney and we eat at most signature resorts . Oivias had ... NY strip... was one of the best. The pasta dishes were good, lamb chops good, dessert very good. We have the DxDP, so prices are no concern for us. Olivia's crab cakes are delish. Their coconut bread is unique and delish. The salad dressing on the bed of greens with the crab cakes is to die for. I find the portions at the Turf Club more than enough.. what portions should be but we Americans expect more! We get an app, drink, entrée and dessert 3 times a day so..., normal size portions are welcomed because I don't like taking food back or wasting! Not one person in our group left anywhere near hungry and all said they would return to Olivias and the Turf Club. If you only have a few days and a few credits, these places are out of the way. We have 195 DxDP credits and 130 snack credits....we love our sit down meals... we are sharing credits, we have family coming down two separate times during our 15 night stay. We did it last year and was great....TREX is loud and full of kids but we do love the food and extensive menu.

We have our own car, and are not on the dining plan. Just trying to keep the peace and give the people what they want, lol. And what they want is steak, steak that is cooked good, unlike the ones they get at home, lol.
