Behind the Seeds: reserve early or walk up?

Does Behind the Seeds still often have same day availability? The most recent info I could find was from 2011. We will be going in September. I'd love to do it, but would prefer to leave it as a spontaneous thing if possible.

Also, how is it for preschoolers? We have a pretty inquisitive 5 year old and I think she'd really be into it, but not sure if I'm way off base.

Walk up works especially if you sign up early in the day. Last time I looked the first tour was at 10:30am.

We have done this tour several times and have always done it by just walking up not long before the tour we wanted (time wise) was about get going. Usually around 20-30 minutes has always worked for us.

We took this tour last week and it was cool as always. Also, there were several young children in our tour that seemed to be fine with the tour. It lasts about 1:15 to 1:30 depending on the guide.
