Bedding Report is simply GROSS!

CoolDisneymom, I'm sorry to continue the thread :( but one more comment. I am one who mentioned the germ concern and apparently I didn't phrase my post correctly. I just never gave a whole lot of thought to the comforter thing and I responded to the posts I read when I thought about it. I'm not paranoid about it and I never said I thought that you could get some dreaded disease as some have mentioned. I was just talking about germs when you have large amounts of people ANYWHERE. It can't be avoided but spraying a little Lysol can't hurt can it? And yes, perhaps I am a little "Germaphobic" and that's because I teach elementary students and I see first hand how fast common illnesses spread through kids (and faculty) touching the same items. And yes, little boys especially will get naked and sit on the bed to put on their swimsuit. I think it is a male's "right of passage" or something lol.

I do not think that terrible things will happen from a dirty comforter. I would be surprised if you have had a patient come in with a bad infection gotten from sheets. I never have but that certainly doesn't mean it has never happened. As far as immunosuppression goes, we are told to avoid hot tubs, kiddie pools(much higher ecoli factor than comforters) and obviously ill people.

I definitely agree that people who are immune suppressed (and those who aren't) are much more likely to get infections from wet stuff rather than dry stuff, but most people who get infected cannot pinpoint the cause/place of infection. Personally, I try mightily to not come in contact with strangers' body fluids. ;)

As was mentioned in a previous thread on this topic, probably the best way to avoid dirty comforters would be to offer a housekeeping staff member a nice tip (like 10 or 20 bucks) on your first day at the hotel if they will bring you a freshly washed comforter and sheets.

I generally just pull the sheet back over the comforter so that I don't come in contact with it.

I've always felt that most people catch illnesses on the plane going TO their destination. Illnesses take a few days to "incubate" in you before you show symptoms. So if you get sick you're 3rd day at Disney, you most likely picked up the bug on the plane comming down, not from the hotel or rubbing elbows with the masses waiting in line for Space Mountain.

My parents picked up a nasty flu bug this way. They flew from Phoenix to Chicago to vistit over Christmas, and got sick about 3 or four days into the trip. They spent the rest of the 2 weeks sick a dogs. They got better just in time to fly home!

My advice (and I'm not a germ freek by any stretch!) is to use wipes on everything you touch in the airplane as well as wipeing down the hotel room (including the tv remote, yuck!). Since my mother started wipeing down the aircraft, she hasn't been sick on a trip.

mmmm.... Maybe somebody could make a fortune opening a Disney hotel that offers clean duvet covers on every bed! A clean bedspread is not very practical - a duvet cover is very possible...

kk100, I am with you. I wouldn't even CARE if there wasn't a bedspread. A less pretty blanket would be FINE if I knew it had been washed! :) When I first heard all this a few years back, I vowed NEVER to use the bedspreads again... but we keep the AC on to beat humidity and we get cold. Maybe I will start folding the bedspreads and putting them away in the closet, and calling and asking for two extra blankets... I would hope the ones housekeeping brings would be washed?

I think of this when we travel, but honestly I have just been lazy. We have never gotten sick on vacation, despite all the clickers we touch. I chalk this up to the fact that we drive, not fly... So we check in and I think about it then kind of forget. Wish I had never learned about those nasty bedspreads! :)

Well, I'm adding a large can of Lysol to my "Don't Forget List"::yes::

This thread has gotten somewhat off topic and has turned into a battle. I was certainly not expanding or twisting words in my post, but using dramatic license, which surely others have used also, if I recall correctly. Sorry I don't have kids, as I've mentioned, nor siblings, so how would I know the changing habits of children?

If some individuals (including me) feel so strongly (and that's understandable) a simple solution is to request clean bedding. Hopefully, housekeeping would be willing to change the blanket and the bedspread. I just don't know whether to be honest about the request (I don't want to sit on body fluids) or offer no reason or say something spilled on it. What do you all plan to do?

What about the robes? Are they changed and laundered between guests. Not to open another Pandora's Box or anything...

LOL
Sorry- I have to say it and please take it in the jovial manner that I post it... but weren't you a child at some point?
LOL

Just teasin' ya... maybe you always had great balance and never had to sit down anywhere to get your legs in holes of clothes, swimming suits/etc. :)

No battle here! Promise! :)

I feel bad that a post I started is causing so many to make fun of your opinion.
We're all here because #1we love Disney and #2we all have our own opinions so we should just be able to say how we feel.
I'm very new at this(1 week old hehehehe)
however I did not post this to upset people I truly was not aware of the entire cleaning set up Disney has.
Enough said.

Amen to that!

I haven't finished reading the posts, but I have a couple of thoughts (I haven't had my first cup of coffee yet, so these may not be earth-shattering comments...). First, everything in moderation. Our bodies do need to be around germs to be able to fight them, but some germs are more harmful than others. No, naked butts don't normally touch a doorknob, but when someone leaves the bathroom without washing their hands (or when the sink is outside the room with the toilet) it's basically the same thing.

Most people have a trigger that really bugs them. That's not being germaphobic. Germaphobic people are paranoid about every possible place to pick up germs (and I'm not talking about people with medical reasons to avoid germs). My trigger is the faucet handle and especially the door leaving public restrooms. YUCK! I do everything I can to avoid them because too many people don't wash their hands well after using the toilet. That really disgusts me.

I was at WDW in early Feb and my 4yo did get sick, but it was very early in the vacation and probably either brought the virus from home or picked it up on the airplane.

My son was driving my sister (who met us down there) crazy because he touches everything and then of course touches his mouth or nose. Jake never got sick at the end or after the trip, which was amazing. He has been exposed to many germs since he goes to preschool and had 3 older siblings, and has had his share of colds/stomach viruses, but has NEVER (knock on wood) had a sick dr visit. He has a wonderful immune system, probably because he's been exposed to a normal amount of germs all his life.

At home I do occasionally wipe down door knobs with Lysol wipes, especially during and after someone has ben sick, but I don't use a lot of anti-bacterial products (try to avoid them). I've recently started using Purell wipes (alcohol based) sometimes when we are out and can't wash hands. That's about the extent of what I do and it has worked for us.

T&B

I remember when I was a kid. We would go on vacation with friends of my parents from time to time. We'd have several families traveling together.

Well, I remember my mom's best friend would always bring her own sheets and blankets. She would even bring bathroom cleaner too (along with her rubber gloves). First thing after checking in, she would change the bedding (remove the bedspread and fold it in the corner), change the sheets and clean the bathrooms. I can remember how we'd make fun of her for doing so but now that I'm older I can certainly understand why!!! :scared:

Tigger & Belle, I totally agree with your post. I tried to explain earlier on this thread what I do to give myself peace of mind when I travel. It seems that some people feel that it's a joke. I'm not telling everyone they must follow my footsteps to cleanliness. I was simply telling those of us who feel the same way as I do "what" I do to feel better. I am in no way a total "germophobic"! Maybe I just notice and think about others dirty habits more than some people do. I agree totally with the public restroom thing...YUCK! Sorry, but some people are gross! And I've witnessed that with my own 2 eyes! So God only knows what might go on behind closed doors...esp. those hotel room doors. I don't go all out and houseclean the hotel room, I simply take a few wipes and clean the most obvious germ gathering sites, faucets doorknobs, remotes & toilets. 5, maybe 10 minutes...done
Years ago I cleaned hotel rooms (a short lived job I might add), and let me tell you...one of the ladies I worked with (her name was Carol) would use the same rag she cleaned the tub with to clean the toilet then the sink and faucets then the floor, then she would move on to the next room and use the same rag all over again!!!! Please...this was so disgusting to me. She use to tell me I was going to get fired if I kept using all the paper towels to clean with. Well, sorry... I cleaned those rooms as if me and my family were going to be staying there. I reported her, they did nothing...I quit! So see, ever since then I always go over the room I am staying in to give myself peace of mind. I'm sure there are many more housekeepers like Carol. Perhaps some worse. I just feel better doing what I do.
And by the way, Cinderella37, I plan on asking for clean blankets and bedspreads. I will be staying for 10 nights so I will have it no other way. I want to feel like I'm in a clean enviroment and not have to keep thinking about using that dirty bedspread. As far as robes go, I always bring my own.

Do what ever is necessary to make yourself feel comfortable and let's all have a great vacation!!!!

:)

Wait a minute... I must have missed something. Where did someone make fun of your opinion or imply that how you feel is a "joke"? I certainly hope you don't think I was doing that... certainly not!
I just couldn't resist the "you were a child at some point" comment. I'm sorry..... I didn't mean it like to make fun of you opinion or that how you felt was a joke or anything of that nature. I certainly hope those that made those comments aren't referring to me! :(

This is one of those things that you always think about but don't really want to know the answer to. Because it is worse than I ever thought. It really is GROSS!!

Cindie-rella, of course a person would need to rewipe every day upon returning to the room since housekeeping would have been in the room.

For home I buy the big tubs of Lysol wipes (they do last me a while LOL)--I wonder if they make individual packets for travel.

I do try not to think about these things too much. Just like I try not to think about restaurant cleanliness too much or I'd never go out to eat.

We have known this about all hotels/resorts for a great while now. I was amazed upon reading this how many of you did not realize it. I guess it is something we just don't think about. . . or want to think about LOL.

Not only do we fold the comforters and put them away as soon as we check in, we all wear socks in the room - NO bare feet! (I am sorry if I am making you all think about something ELSE now. . .)

The reasons for socks are obvious, I won't bother going into them.

Something for you to consider.

HTH!

:rotfl: with all due respect, I'm sorry but the visual on this has me cracking up.....a nice little lady disinfecting an entire jet, inside and out, with disposable wipes ;)

Count me among those who wish they'd never opened this thread....eewww...but will be packing a few wipes for the remote ;). Already a frequent handwasher.

But the "no bare feet" has me confused....what about in the pool areas and/or shower???
