Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Good Morning!

Beth - you certainly did have the right to slide last week and you have a great attitude about the whole dieting thing. I've found the same thing - being in my 40's doesn't require an all or nothing approach. It's ok to be someplace in between sometimes.

Tracey - Boys...I only have one but have 3 younger brothers and remember all too well the wrestling matches.

I have made a firm decision to get into serious Minnie prep mode! Making some changes to diet, holding to my work out schedule and mentally setting myself up for success!

Now if someone would kindly remind my body of these goals in about 2 weeks, it would be greatly appreciated. :upsidedow

Have a great day!

Hey everyone. Glad to "see" people are doing well.

As to me, I can sum up things in one word: Arrrrgggg!

Today's a new day though. (Is it me or do the days just keep coming one after another. Now that I think about it, I suppose that's a good thing. ;) )

Yay, it's Bill... ...Nice to see you are still with us. Keep with it Bill, things just have a way of coming together after a concerted effort. :lmao: I am okay with the days one after another, it is this snow that keeps coming day after day after day.......:beach: (me on my virtual vacation)

...Truly, my kids are really well mannered, kind, good boys, but you get 4 boys and it's chaos most of the time....

My parents had 4 boys in 6 years and I am the youngest.

I used to think my Dad had a hair trigger temper; NOW, I am surprised he didn't perform a summary execution of one of us as an example to the other three...

The big punishment in our house (aside from the standard corporal punishment meted out in the late 60s and early 70s by all parents in my neighborhood) was having to stand there watching him fix whatever you just broke. On the other hand, I rarely have to call anyone to fix stuff in my house, so I guess that was time well spent!

Mike

Good afternoon Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a wonderful Tuesday.

I have been a big, fat, slacker lately. Too much stuff going on.

3 miles last night. :woohoo:

Stacie – A Garmin 305! Cool!! :thumbsup2

Everyone – Hey!

Why, is that PatsBill posting? Daaaaaaaaang. :rolleyes1 :worship: :lmao:

Mike: Thanks for the update on the nutritional value. I noticed the recovery meal is almost a 4:1 carb/protein ratio, and I think that's supposed to be good for us. :woohoo: I may try just the shake this week, as I tend to eat a breakfast before I go out. Probably not necessary, but I'm kinda Pavlovian when it comes to food.

Lily: Congratulations on your 2 pounds, for eating healthy, and for being diligent with SP. Breaking up your meals throughout the day is a solid strategy, I think. Thanks for the tip about the endurolyte tablets--I've never tried them. How/why did you end up deciding to use them?

Also, thanks for the kind words & support. I too often tend to overlook or minimize the importance of R&R to my WOs and overall health. I shouldn't because that's the kind of thing that leads to injury. I guess I obsess more about the protein because of the vegetarian thing.

Lisa: I hope your weather stayed sunny for your run. Good luck with the Cytomax; DOOD loves it.

Tracey: What a stressful day! I love the fact that your boys attempted to make up for the incident through housekeeping! Once again, your family wears me out just reading about their escapades!

Beth: I'm glad you enjoyed your Rail Trail run, even at that distance. :scared1: And you're so right in your attitude about eating & lifestyle decisions generally; it doesn't need to be "all or nothing." I've found that I, too, am less rigid about such things as I get older. Maybe it means we're looking at the big picture?

Liz: You can do it, and we'll be here to serve as sounding boards & reminders! I love the way you phrased this:

mentally setting myself up for success!

Too often we set ourselves up for failure, so it's refreshing to be reminded it works both ways!

Bill: Cool pirates imitation. Arrrrgggg! You're right, today is a new day. And I just know you'll make the progress you need & want to. Like Liz says, set yourself up for success!

Vic: Okay, I just have to note that your slacker life--with 3 miles--is still my huffy, puffy workout. ;)

As for me: I am trying to consume as much natural protein much as possible. I eat lots of beans, nuts, cheese, peanut butter, soy. Of course, lots of the stuff I like is high in healthy fats! I'm doing the meat substitutes, brands like Tofurkey & Boca; I'm not really fond them because they're processed foods. But it's one of the many compromises I make for the sake of time, sanity, and protein. Anyway, I've requested a book called Vegetarian Sports Nutrition from Interlibrary Loan & that will hopefully address some of my questions & concerns about my diet.

And weather talk...we're in a seemingly nonstop rainy weather here--the meteorologist started talking about the onset of spring showers & I thought, "What's the difference between those & the winter showers?" :lmao: No snow and a greater chance of flooding, I suppose.

I guess I should have kept my big mouth shut about planning on working out 6 days a week. Ever since I said that it's been WTO/LTO time. Maybe if I sneak up on it it won't notice? :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Be careful about eating all of that natural protein. The family may make you sit in another room. I just blame it on the dogs. ;) :rotfl2:

OK, I have to ask, since I am lost with some of the acronyms...WTO/LTO, SP, DOOD?

Thank you...

45 minute swim on tap for 0500 tomorrow, followed by a 30 minute run.

Also, the link below seems to agree that a 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein is ideal for endurance athletes...provided its consumed within 2 hours of the workout...

Liz, I sure hope our spring showers aren't flash floods!

It's ok Vic it's a while before the next race, you can have a little break, just make sure it's a short break or we will send someone over to drag you out.

Yes blaming the dog works, even when the dog is not there.

I had a good 4 miles on the tready this morning with a little bit of a Judy moment. I was alternating walking laps from 4.0 to 4.5, then after a couple of miles I thought I was ready to up the pace to 12 min per mile so I bumped it up to 6.0. I thought dang, 12 mpm is tough today, I must be more tired than I thought. I went on and finished walking the lap, then realized after I started pushing the speed button back down that 12 mpm is 5.0, oops.:upsidedow

Then I did a good hour of cals and stretching. My achillies is feeling pretty good but I have a groin muscle that has been singing for a few days, it doesn't affect the walking though.

Bill, sounds like you are having a rowsing good time.

Debra, Lisa, Liz and all my other lean mean buds have a super evening.

Actually the endurolytes came after conversing with Robert re: my DHs leg cramping esp in summer. DH had his colon removed a couple years ago and no longer has primary absorbtion. His Cleve. Clinic doc said something that all we need is a sugar/salt component to get the electrolytes back into our system. That is all they use in China. Something clicked when Robert was talking about Endurolytes and that he uses these supplements primarily and has since he's been doing ultras. The rest just happened at Goofy. To me and DH they do work!

I'm interested in your book. Let me know if you like it after you've reviewed it.

Mike/Lily: I am going to look for some Cytomax and add that in at least post run to see how it works for me. I am also going to look at the Endurolytes as tablets I can do but that whole chewing and running and drinking thing is just an accident waiting to happen for me. The other thing I did figure out during the half was at every other station, I took a water and a Powerade and the dilution of the Powerade helped me not to get heartburn from it. I think it also helps with the absorption the longer you are stressing your system.
I meant to address the running while eating/drinking thing before. I can NEVER do that. No walking and chewing gum at the same time here for me. I usually always either really walk or even stop. I sacrafice the little bits of time so I can do this. I've got GERD and an esophageal motility disorder so it just has to be that way for me. Anyone who can do it all amazes me for sure! Seems like youv'e got a good line on what to try. I'm interested in how the Cytomax works.

OK, I have to ask, since I am lost with some of the acronyms...WTO/LTO, SP, DOOD?
Mike
I can help some: WTO = work takes over; LTO = Life takes over; SP = Spark People dot com (web site to log lots of things nutrition intake and such). Lastly DOOD ? I can't help you here with that one.

I had supper logged in all my food and want a snack so badly today. Just now it's too late. Can't eat too late in the eve for same health reasons as mentioned above. So, I guess I'm done for the day.

Keep at it everyone!

:dance3:

Hi Lean Meaners!

Of course, I'd have to actually be moving and eating right to claim I belong with you...I haven't done a darned thing since Thursday. I don't know what's up, I just have this mental block and I haven't moved. Sigh.

I'm not unhealthy (well, I am, but I should say I'm not injured). I just feel like I'm not making any progress. My scale has been going steadily in the wrong direction, and I'm not seeing results.

This is probably not the right thread for this. I apologize, I'm on so many I lose track. That's another thing I haven't really done -- I haven't been posting like I usually do. I just come home, fall into bed, do the minimum to get my family out the door the next day (ok, not exactly in that order), and mindlessly watch reality tv. Something is very wrong with this picture, I'm just not sure what to do to get myself moving again.

Anyway, I meant to come on here and catch up on everyone else -- I promise to do that soon. I have this massive project due Thursday, and so my DIS time is nonexistent during the day. And since my computer isn't in my bed...you get the picture.

Everybody have a great losing day tomorrow, and I will be back in the saddle before I know it!

Maria

Today was a 45 minute swim with a 35 minute run.

I managed to put the "endure" into "endurance"...this was not a particularly enjoyable swim, but the recovery shake is yummy.

Have a healthy day everyone!!

Happy Spring Everyone!! OK, so it's spring in name only around here, but I'm hopeful the weather will improve soon.

In trying to find out some nutritional info about brown rice syrup I came across 2 pretty interesting websites. One is sweetsavvy.com which lists all the good sweeteners vs. bad sweeteners. The other is truthaboutsplenda.com. That's a pretty scary site about how bad Splenda is for you. I know sometimes there is a trade off. Being overweight is bad for you, so if it takes Splenda to help you achieve a healthy weight maybe it's worth the health risks.

I've been getting back to running slowly. Still only doing 2 or 3 miles at a time, but my health is holding steady so I'll take that. I plan to continue another week of "easy" runs before increasing my mileage and pace next week.

Maria: Sorry you've lost your spark. Sometimes we just need to allow ourselves some down days. Hopefully work will get easier or the weather will get nicer or you'll stumble upon something that gets you motivated again- go to the library for a fitness book. Give yourself a couple days and if it doesn't get better than maybe it's time to get tough with yourself and do it anyway. I often tell myself, you don't have to like it, you just have to do it (and I almost ALWAYS feel better after having done it.) Good luck.

Dave: Great job on the 6.0. Too funny about thinking you were having an off day.

Vic: The best laid plans... Good luck sneaking up on the 6 days a week thing.

Bill: Hope this new day is a good one for you.

Liz: Congrats on the decision to get into Minnie Prep mode. Just remember every little bit you can do now will pay off come May.

Beth: I'm glad you're back into a good eating groove. It's a great thing that you're not beating yourself up about last week. You did what you needed to do at the time.

Tracey: Sorry about your son's injury. Yea for a clean house though.

Lily: Good job on losing 2 lbs. It's great that you're taking control over the things you can right now. When you're back to working out full steam, you'll really reap the benefits.

Debra: I hope the extra fuel helps out in your workouts.

Lisa: I hope you're not getting piled on in snow.

Mike: Nice job getting it done. Some days you just have to get through the workout. It makes you appreciate the good ones all the more. Glad you treated yourself to your recovery shake.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Good morning, Lean Meaners!

Beth...That is such a great attitude.:goodvibes
Lisa..Ya' gotta love the words "on accident". Your kids sound like mine in trying to clean up the mess. I'm a much calmer person when my house is in order. I've been spring cleaning like crazy---the kids are teasing me about it.;)
Liz...I'm going to join the "mentally setting myself up for success" group! :cool1: This is much better than the "mentally beating myself up" stint that I've been doing.
Mike...Thanks for the laugh! I seriously need to print out your response and hang it on my fridge. What about your mom, has she remained normal? I worry about my sanity.:lmao: My husband shows our boys how to fix everything, too. Lately, our punishment has been that the boys have to rub our backs (or my feet). Man they hate that! Good golly, what time do you wake up? It was only 6:15 and you had already ran 45min and swam 35 min.:worship:
Bill... Mornin'. Yep, the days keep comin'. Hope it's a good one.:goodvibes
Debra...You are so inspiring in your healthy lifestyle choices. And if I haven't said it before...I love reading your posts. You are so very thoughtful and heartfelt in your responses and your sense of humor---well, it's just fabulous! Now, you have to tell Mike about your DOOD!
Vic...I think "slacker" is the last word anyone around here would use to describe you.:) WTG on your 3 miler. And, it's always the dog around here!
Panda...I think that I will have to refer to you as "Walks as fast as the Wind Blows Panda". You are speedy--at 10min/mile I think I'm running quickly, I'm amazed by race walkers.:worship:
Lily...I keep reading posts about endurolyte, gel blocks, hydrating, jelly beans, etc. and found myself saying, "Huh?" I really need to figure all of this out. Thanks for always passing on good info. I just figured out how to keep running and re-tie my pants at the same time. Next I'll figure out how to take a drink.
 Maria:hug: Today's another day. Good luck with your project.
Cindy...I'm scared to even look at the Splenda site. Sounds like you're doing the right thing with slowly getting your runs back in.
*Have a great day all.**

Good morning Lean Meaners!!! Another day.......and so on..... I was to be working extra today, but turns out that they didn't need me at work. Good thing too, my dh had to leave early today and my kids would have never made it out the door for school this morning without my 'help'!:headache:

Debra: I know what it means to have some 'convinence' in life even though it's not 100% what we want! I try to eat healthy, but I still need to have some processed food now and then for the family. When you have to work, what else would we do? There isn't enough time in my day to get it all done! I am making banana bread right now, with whole wheat flour! Too bad my family never eats it! I am sending the kids to my sister's tomorrow, since I have to work Good Friday, she is watching the kids for me. So, I will send her the bread for a treat!

WWDave: Good job getting the TM time in......I am always trying to 'figure' out how fast I am actually going on the TM....it's never faster though....usually slower than I want! :confused3

Mike: DOOD is Debra's dh.....I forget what it stands for.....she'll have to let you know.

Tiger Lily: Thanks for all the good information. I am glad the scale is treating you right!

Lisa: Hope your weather gets better.....mine too! The rain is getting me down.

Bill: Slacker, huh? Don't think so...... Hope life gets easier (((((for all of us!))))

As for me: I face a day of errands and laundry, :laundy: which I am glad about. I didn't know when that was all going to get done with working all week....I will be a little sad come pay day! :confused3 I ended up with a day off yesterday.....didn't want to, but my legs were still sore from my 10 miler on Monday, and it was raining......so many excuses......I plan on the gym today. Hopefully an hour on the TM for 5 miles......I'll let you know how that plan goes!

Beth

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Happy Hump Day!

Looks like we’re in for some rough weather this morning. I’ll be glad to see the rain though. The pollen has been horrible.

Another 3 miler last night. Two days in a row. That’s almost a trend.

Maria – Glad to see you back with us.

Cindy – Take it slow and easy. WTG with the 2-3 milers!

Tracey – Hey!

Mike – WTG with the bike and swim!

Beth – WTG with the 10 Miler! Hope your workout goes ok today.

Y’all take care.

:thumbsup2

Panda News Flash:

A 2007 study found that the average Australian walks about 900 miles per year.

Another study found that Australians drink average 22 gallons of beer a year. That means, on average, that Australians get about 41 miles to the gallon.

Not bad, eh!

Good morning Lean and Mean friends. Amyone else getting rained on today? There was a bad car pile up on Interstate 65, which runs through my town. The wreak was caused by several inches of water running accross the road.

Happy Panda:hippie:

Hello all. Happy St. Joseph's Day. (I am Irish (and other things), not Italian. However I grew up in RI and went to high school near Federal Hill. Thus, there was a lot of "fun" Irish v. Italian banter. St. Patrick's Day had better drinks IMHO, but I think the Italians easily won on the food side.) Anyway, I'll try not to celebrate today and I will step away from the canolis and zepillis. --- INCOMING PASTRIES -- TAKE COVER.

Thanks for the help on the acronyms!

Cecelia, VERY sorry to hear about your father...we'll say some prayers & send good thoughts your way.

Since I am tired of my swims being nothing more than drowning avoidance sessions, I took the plunge (pun intended) and am going to take swimming lessons from the local tri store proprietor. First lesson is tomorrow night; I'll keep all of ya'll posted!

Speed walkers at 10 minute miles...good lord...I guess I run in slow motion, considering that is what I usually hope to "run" my events at that pace.

Mike

P.S. Ever notice that you can re-arrange the letters in "endurance" and come up with "race n nude"?

Mike - no, no I can't say as I ever noticed that.....

And what time do you get up that you're out avoiding drowning at 5am?! I'm a strong swimmer but at that time of the day I think I'd need water wings. :rotfl:
