Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Mike: I hear ya, patient waiter I am not. I think I would let my breakfast settle first though. Retasting is never tops on my list.

Shan: :wizard: for a speedy recovery. You will be fine. Heck, you just ran 12 miles. I am sending happy healthy thoughts for your quick healing.

Debra: I looked up the shoes as we have an outlet in the next town. I am going there this weekend to check on the $$ of those shoes. I have trouble with NB due to the lack of arch support but those are rated at a medium arch so I have to check them out...they are green....and purty!!! I too call people dude. DROOL would be pretty hilarious until he found out...kind of like POOP. :lmao:

Dave: Stretching is soooooo important. I think that is why I like yoga so much. It gives me the stretch along with the mental well being. Breathing is important too and it sure helps me relax. I had a bad run that I quit after figuring out I was torturing myself yesterday and the yoga helped me feel a little better and far more centered. Although off center is kind of fun too..:tilt:

Okay, all you oatmeal-raisin cookie lovers, here it is, fresh and hot off the presses from the Biggest Loser Cookbook:
PB-Oatmeal cookies (makes two 2 cookie servings):
12 pitted dates
1/3 cup old fashioned oats
1 Tbsp reduced-fat PB

Chop the dates in a food processor until finely chopped and sticking together. With a spatula, transfer to a small mixing bowl. Add the oats and PB. Using an electric mixer, mix well. Divide mixture into 4 equal amounts, shape each into a ball and place 1 ball between 2 sheets of waxed paper. Flatten the ball to a 3-inch diameter cookie. Repeat with each ball. Serve immediately or stack between sheets of waxed paper in airtight container. Refrigerate up to 5 days.

A healthy oatmeal cookie. I know not raisin-oatmeal but try them and I bet you will LOVE them!!!! :thumbsup2

Okay......who started the oatmeal raisin cookie talk?????? I want to know!!!! I found a totally great recipe, and made them during my 'bake sale' fund raiser. Man, they were excellent cookies! But, not the healthy version by any means......I told my sister that I would make her a batch for Easter, but now I am scared!:scared1: I'll end up eating them all!

Well, I can't say that yesterday went well......long day at work, had to run home to pack the kids up to go to my sister's for the weekend, and then ate out with dh. The eating out went ok.....ate a portabella mushroom burger with feta cheese without the roll. Then, I stop at the store and buy myself some pretzels!!!! and ate them..... Oh well, today is another day! :confused3

I have to say that this month is not going as planned....:headache: but, I am still running, and exercising, and am ok with that. I needed a break, so I will move forward from today with a brighter outlook! Gone is the 'all or nothing' attitude!

Debra: Does DOOD know his nickname? I think it's cute! The shoes ROCK! Wish green and all! Hope they give you many good miles ahead!

WWDave: The weight loss is impressive my friend!

TigerLily: Don't worry.....the jeans will work out before you know it! Maybe dresses and skirts will be fun for awhile! I wear my jean skirt all the time!

Mike: Good luck with your swim......and don't worry so much about breakfast....it will pick up your metabolism a little! ((((I always tell myself that....makes me feel better!))))

Everyone have a great Lean Meaner Easter!

Beth

I posted this on the weekly thread, but wanted to run it by you guys too...

Hey guys! Just a quck post here to ask a question...

I tested out my new garmin 305 today with the Heart Rate monitor for my 2 mile run. I didn't program it for my specific heart rate, but let it set the standard zones. For the two miles, my average heart rate was 175 bpm and my max was 188 bpm. Close to the end of the 2 miles, it beeped at me 3 times saying it was too high. It seems I spent 1.6 miles in Zone 5! From what I've read, you shouldn't be in Zone 5 much. Zone 3-4 is where you need to be for losing weight and training. My avg pace was only 13:50. I don't understand why heart-rate is so high.

Any feeback would be appreciated! Thanks so much you guys!!!

Deb...Love your shoes by the way!!! I tested those out, but started having the numb feet problem. I ended up w/ the Saucony Hurricanes, but looking back, I don't think it was the shoes. I really loved those shoes. I may try them again in the future! I still get numb feet occassionally. I'm just have weird feet I guess.

Beth...Good job keeping up w/ your running!!! :thumbsup2

I tottaly have to get better at stretching!!! I think that's my calves hurt me the entire 2 miles!!!

Hope everyone has a good day!

Stacie

Nice new babies Debra. And lime green, too. :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for the posts. I went to the doc today. He says it is a virus, but gave me an antibiotic to keep from getting any secondary infections. He ran several halfs and a full when he was younger and I think he understood how important it was for me to get well.

I unfortunately haven't gotten much rest, the kids have kept me super busy! Yesterday I had to go to a meeting up at school, then shop for Easter baskets, take them both to get dance recital pictures and then come home and help my oldest work on a paper. I felt like crying! I was like totally sweating, so miserable.

Today I'm supposed to take the girls to my parents' house for the weekend, but I'm waiting until the last second on that one. I'm about to go take a quick nap before they get home from school.

Oh, and I gained a pound back. :rotfl2:

Hi guys and pretty princesses. Just a quick drive by to say hi before bed.

Mike breakfast is the most important meal Remember the old saying, "Eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Queen and Dinner like a peasent".

Lisa you are a little off center, that's why we love you.

Good night dear friends.

...Mike breakfast is the most important meal Remember the old saying, "Eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Queen and Dinner like a peasent".
...

Great, breakfast like Elvis, lunch like Liberace, and dinner like Kato Kaelin...thats a lot of pressure!

anyway, I'm off to my 90 minute on the bike and 30 minute brick for today.

Yesterday I used the stuff from my first swim lesson on Thursday night, and WOW what an easy pleasant swim! 45 minutes just flew by...I actually never needed to stop for a break; i know it wasn't fast, but since my goal is to just complete it, I am actually pretty excited about this now.

Mike

What a week......glad it's over. The kids being gone for the weekend has just thrown my schedule completely off. I haven't run for two days! I wasn't eating well again last night. My dh was just staring at me, while eating ice cream.....something I hardley ever do. It was completely a choosen thing......I willingly ate it all!!!!! :lmao: It is different for me to actually eat it by choice, rather than stuffing without thinking. I wanted a break and got it! :lmao:

Now, for today. I am making good choices today.......I will not indulge in the batch of cookies I am making right now! I will be careful for the next couple of days, and then on Monday get back to my usual. Not punishing myself, just getting back into the groove. I thought I had it yesterday, but had a simple beer with clams and alcohol changes my mind for me! Oh well.....it tasted good!

I am heading out to the trail today.....for a long run. Don't know yet how long, but probably 8 miles. I'll let you know!

Beth

Guys and our beautiful princesses. I need your help. I started a post to make the race organizers aware that we need the 16 min pace restriction relaxed for the ToT. Last year we addressed this with them and they relaxed it to 18 min per mile.

No I do not need a relaxed pace neither do most of you, but if you believe as I do that we are blazing the trail for others to follow back to health then support this cause.

When there is a race with a realistic goal out there with the promise of fun also, it makes it a much greater motivation. We have people that read our words that are many many lbs over weight, or they are recoving from major injury or illness. We tell those people that they are still beautiful and valued members of our group. This is a way we can show that we believe what we say and show it with our action.

We don't often realize it but through the power of the internet a lot more people read what we say than respond. We are the light in the darkness for millions, some don't yet have the courage to join yet, but I want everyone of them to know they are welcome and already a part of our group even if they have been quiet.

Ok I'm off my soap box.

Oh MY, I might just have to out for some tonight to spit in the face of the snow/cold we have here.

Two of my favorite foods right there Beth...good job not beating yourself up, and have a great run!

Hi Lean Meaners.
I've been MIA as I took my kidlets to the lake for a few days. No phone, no internet, just peace and quiet......heaven. It's so great to run there with lots of trees, always a lake view, and lots of wildlife. Although, the hills can be a killer! You've all been very busy. This has been a busy place for the last few days.
Shan.. Hope you're feeling better.
Debra...LOVE the new shoes. "George and Georgina"? only you would name your shoes.:lmao: I hope they work out perfectly!
Mike...4:30... oh my word....you are dedicated:worship:
Everyone have a wonderful Easter.:flower3:

Lily/Dave: Thanks for the reminder about the stretching. I'm so glad to have the reminders from folks like you and Dave, as I'm like Mike in that I tend to overlook or shortchange that part of my training. I've been much better about it since joining the WISH team. And I know I feel much better when I do it. :goodvibes

Mike: How frustrating about the pool. I'd be furious. I get annoyed that my yoga instructor thinks that the class begins 10 minutes after it does.

Also, thanks for the recovery drink. I made it for DOOD today, as he had a 16-mile LR. I substituted 1% milk for soy, used vanilla nonfat yogurt and blueberries (as this is what was in the fridge), and added a scoop of chocolate soy protein in addition to the Ghiradelli. He loved it!

Lisa: The shoes are pretty, aren't they? And they complement my red running face. :rotfl: Guess who just picked up some dates at the grocery?? Because it's the dried fruit, oatmeal, PB combo that attracted me to your cookie substitute. I think I'll add a couple of spices to it, as I get cravings for cinnamon (I'm not kidding), but it looks delicious!

Beth: That doesn't mean I don't want to know your recipe, because of course I'll make that one too--eventually. That's one of the things I love about DOOD; he'll eat the bulk of what I make, which allows me to sample a treat or two without getting out of control. And yeah, DOOD not only knows his nickname, he's the one who suggested I use it here on WISH. Secretly, he wants to join the festivities--he just hasn't admitted it yet.

I know you've had your challenges this week, eating being perhaps the least among them, but I think you should recognize how well you've been doing overall. When I read your eating, I do see healthy things like portabella mushroom burgers. Sure, you're eating other things, but it's not like you've just abandoned your nutritional goals & said, "That's it! I give up!" You're being really conscious of your eating--and why. That's a very good thing, I think, even if you're not always eating "good" things. Have fun on your trail, too!

Stacie: I responded on the other thread--wish I could help with the Garmin & HR. I tend to go by feel & pulse, using my watch.

Shan: You've got a great doctor, one who understands your running in relationship to your life & overall health. Please try to get some rest, even though I can't imagine how difficult it is with your busy, busy kids & lifestyle. You need & deserve it.

Dave: I'll go post on that thread as soon as I finish here. I strongly believe in a generous pace, as it encourages people like me to do what they thought impossible! Disney's offering of events with such paces seem to me
very savvy & at least as supportive of promoting healthier lifestyles as their so-called changes to kids' meals & the like.

Tracey: Wow--that actually sounds...peaceful. Even with the boys. It sounds like the perfect, active getaway.

As for me: Well, the shoes are working out well, if not perfectly. I got one little blister on my LR, in a new place, but it's one I think I can address & easily avoid in future runs. They do fit far better than other shoes I've owned. I just have hard-to-fit feet and am prone to blisters. I'll continue working on getting that perfect combination, but the shoes are good in all other ways so I'm happy.

I'm also going to attempt to make my first protein bars here at home, using soy protein. I don't have a lot of expectations for them, because I'm not overly fond of protein bars. But I do think I need the extra protein, and I'm not a fan of shakes right now because of the liquid calories & my attempts at weight loss (although Mike's WAS tasty). I'll let you know how it goes.

Debra: You are such a postitve force here on the WISH.....I am so glad you post such good feelings and thoughts. You are so well spoken.....I admire that so much. Thank you for the wonderful thoughts for me. Yes, I do try to eat right, but it doesn't always work. I think being a little kinder to myself, makes it easier to keep on the right track. Today has been good so far! I did get 8.0 miles in today, it was slow, but enjoyable. Since I ran 10 on Monday, my legs were a little tired.....but the weather held up. No rain, and cold, but doable for me with two shirts on.

I hope everyone has a good Lean Meaner weekend.

Beth

Yes Beth I agree, Debra is a sweetheart, we are blessed to have her with us.

Hey all. As I just posted on the new weekly thread, I've got nothing to really say at least as to anything new and exciting with me. However, in lurking on this thread, I was wondering if people thought it might be worth starting a "Lean Mean Recipies" thread (and no, that doesn't have to be the actual name) to make finding recipes that have been posted here easier to find (that way maybe I'll actually try them). I don't have any of my own and I don't know if this is already covered by the recipies thread that I think Lily linked to the marathon FAQs thread, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

I was hoping that the good helpful recipes would make their way over to that Eating Healthy recipe thread on the WISH side.

It was intended when the thread was moved there to encourage other WISHers to use the recipes in their quest for a healthy lifestyle. I guess I'd really like that we could use the recipes thread there in the WISH Healthy Eating recipes section. How about a link from the first LEAN Mean post? We'd all know to go from the first post here if we need. What do you think?

I guess I can move that thread back to this side, I'd just love if we could manage to share with more folks.

Good Morning Lean Meaners. I am sorry about posting recipes in the wrong place. I was just trying to answer some needs specified on this particular thread. I will be a good girl and post where I am supposed to from now on.

Debra: Thanks for the virtual jelly beans on our Super Goofs thread. I hope they were Jelly Belly Beans, they are my favorite. Yummy. And hey, virtual jelly beans equals no calories so it is all good. :thumbsup2

Bill: Nice to see you again. You should stop lurking and come to the virtual reality we all enjoy. We miss ya around here. :goodvibes

Stacie: I have a Garmin 205, no heart rate monitor so I am of no help. I have never lost any workouts on mine. I also transfer them quite anally into a running journal as soon as I am done so maybe it is afraid to lose things!!!

Tracey: No phone....no internet...I would panic. JK, it sounds beautiful and peaceful. I miss my time by the water. It is so soothing. I take the kidlets to the beach in the summer but all they want to do is play... I want to lay around, read a book and enjoy the sounds of the waves! :rolleyes1

Shan: I hope you are feeling better. DS6 must have felt your virtual virus and is down coughing, sore throat, etcetera. Lets see, 7 days incubation, 14 days to my half....perfect timing right. I am out for 8 miles in the cold windy conditions so lets hope I frighten that virus away.

Everyone else, including the Great Panda and Big Vic: Howdy, hi and how yall doin????? (I can say yall after my stint in GA)

Me, I did not eat much yesterday. On the run constantly, DS6 to baseball clinic, DD13 to gymnastics private lesson and then 2 hour Easter egg hunt/play time at the gym for members and siblings, then more snowmobile shopping (no I still don't have one :headache: ) and then home for dinner. Phew...then DS woke up in the middle of the night with a sore throat and cough. Perfect day, right :sad2: I put off my run from yesterday due to the temps in the teens with the wind chill. It was supposed to die down but this morning I hear it still whipping outside. It may be a well motivated 8 today!! No sleep, lack of nutrition from yesterday, 8 mile run in the freezing cold....priceless. Have a great day Lean Meaners!!! :dance3:

Lisa an extra hug for your day of not being pampered:hug: I can't imagine how you make it up there in the frozen north. If I didn't know how tiny and cute you were I would have this visual of you as a female version of Grissley Adams, up there with the wild animals and the frozen forests.

My recipes are very simple things. We eat in passing at our house since we are always on different schedules. I do things like a can of veggie soup with a can of drained tuna added and heated in the Micro Wave. Or if I get real high tech I'll do a package of Micro Wave Wild Rice and add a few Boca Sasuages cut up in it.

Bill, I know dealing with your recovery problems have to be very frustrating for you and I admire your courage for keeping on.

Erica will be sleeping today and I'll be doing some much needed house cleaning. Our kitchen needs love.

Have a wonderfull Easter y'all.

Good morning Lean Meaners, and Happy Easter!

Not a lot to report. Got in a 3 miler on Friday.

Yesterday the DW and I spent the day at the shooting range so she could finish up her shooter safety class requirement. I bought her a Walther P22 .22 cal semi-auto pistol to carry. The class is required so she can apply for her concealed weapon permit. Had a great time. She shot better than I did.

Heading to Orlando in a couple of hour on business.

I'll check in with yunz guys later.

Take care.

:)

:)

Vic, when Erica decided to get her concealed weapon permit I bought her a small S/W nickle plated 38 revolver with a 2" barrell. She went to the class and when she came home she said she wanted a Glock compact 40cal. So I got her a Glock 40cal and also a Glock compact in a 357sig. That year she fired about 5,000 rounds at the range learning to combat shoot. I have a good friend who taught at the Marine Sniper school who worked with her when I couldn't. Between us we trained her pretty good. She can draw and clear 5 bowling pins off a table at 15 yards in under 10 secs.
