Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Vic: Vic, Vic, Vic, Vic...I don't need reasons NOT to eat protein! No matter how reasonable. ;) :rotfl: And 2 days in a row! I don't run 2 days in a row yet, but would like to build to it.

Mike: Thanks for the link on the post-recovery protein. More information, in easily digestible articles! :rotfl2: I'm so impressed that you can do a 45 minutes swim followed by a run! Are you training for an upcoming event--you probably said & I've forgotten. (Sorry, the memory's never been great.)

Dave: I love your 5.0/6.0 mph story and how you just toughed it out. I've done that. It's called a Judy moment? :confused3

Oh, we've got flood warnings here & there's no sign that the rain is stopping anytime soon--unless it turns to snow tonight, which is a real possibility.

Lily: Thanks for the endurolyte explanation; it makes a lot of sense. Sorry to hear about your GERD and an esophageal motility disorder; I suppose the slim silver lining is no late-night noshing, huh? :sad2:

Maria: Awww . I knew you were busy at work, but didn't know you were going through the rest. I know it doesn't help your situation, but I think we all go through periods like this. I'm sure you'll get over the hump, maybe after spring officially breaks & you can really be outside, or with Easter. Just keep doing the best you can. And, if I may offer this advice, which I often have to tell myself: "Fake it until you feel it." Sounds strange, I know, but sometimes just going through the motions helps me. In the meantime, I'll be thinking of you.

Cindy: Thanks for the sweetsavvy site; I've bookmarked it to go through later. And :yay: for the consistency in your running & recovery!

Tracey: Thanks for the compliments. I do think I'm funny--I might be the only one who does, but I'm always laughing at myself! I, too, love all the great information I get here--Lean Meaners have improved my life immeasurably.

Beth: Congratulations, I guess, on having a little less work today; it's a trade-off for you right now, I know. But your family definitely needs you! And thanks for your understanding comment about convenience foods. I just need to make one change at a time, so I'm not so overwhelmed. But you're right, life/work/relationships need to be balanced with my vision of a eating perfectly. I hope your TM time energizes you, or at least feels good.

Bill: We had Irish vs. Dutch banter, which involved wearing orange & celebrating Protestantism. Most people didn't get it when I was a child, so I still got pinched. Btw, I thought of you today when a talk show featured the author of the Eat Clean book. I might check out her book, as it seems to make a lot of sense & dovetails with what I'm trying to do. How's eating clean coming along for you?

As for me: Pouring rain, so I was going to run on the TM at the gym. EVERY TM was taken for the first 45-50 minutes I was there, so I called it a wash & completed other XT rather than attempt a run on already-tired legs. (Just not that bold yet.) I'll go back tomorrow, since it should still be pouring, and hope it's better. If not, I'll be giving them the old evil-eyed stare--how dare those other athletes use my TMs? :rotfl:

In good news, I think I'm getting new running shoes tomorrow if the scheduling works out! :cool1: My mileage is back up to the point where I have little blisters forming & I'm long overdue anyway. There's a running specialty store nearby, one recommended by Runner's World! I'm so excited!

And since Mike asked:
DOOD is my DH, and means Dear One of Debra (long story, but if you're familiar with a Pgh food critic named Munch, I'll give you the full story). DOOD doesn't post here--although I have hopes--but he is a major reason I found WISH. He's a marathoner moving into endurance races, and I was attracted to running because of his many events. In short, DOOD inspires me and he helps me realize my goals & become a better person than I would be without him, a better version of me.

Debra:

I'm mid week 3 of a 20 week training for the Spirit of Racine 1/2 Iron Man...and I'm all terrified...

Maria: Sorry you've lost your spark. Sometimes we just need to allow ourselves some down days. Hopefully work will get easier or the weather will get nicer or you'll stumble upon something that gets you motivated again- go to the library for a fitness book. Give yourself a couple days and if it doesn't get better than maybe it's time to get tough with yourself and do it anyway. I often tell myself, you don't have to like it, you just have to do it (and I almost ALWAYS feel better after having done it.) Good luck.

Cindy
Well said!

Panda News Flash:A 2007 study found that the average Australian walks about 900 miles per year.

Another study found that Australians drink average 22 gallons of beer a year. That means, on average, that Australians get about 41 miles to the gallon.

Not bad, eh!
Happy Panda:hippie:
Those 41 mpg for me would be between the bar and the potty!

Hello all. Happy St. Joseph's Day. (I am Irish (and other things), not Italian. However I grew up in RI and went to high school near Federal Hill. Thus, there was a lot of "fun" Irish v. Italian banter. St. Patrick's Day had better drinks IMHO, but I think the Italians easily won on the food side.) Anyway, I'll try not to celebrate today and I will step away from the canolis and zepillis. --- INCOMING PASTRIES -- TAKE COVER.
Leave the gun. Take the canolis! Yummmm! Oooh sorry, we're supposed to be good aren't we. But Yummm!

You always have wonderful posts! I love your DOOD post info. That is fantastic. Yay! for new shoes too! I WISH you find the perfect shoes!

Mike, you'll do fine. Especially that you've got those lessons on deck. Nothing bu success.

According to SP I've logged a string of eating healthy days. Tonight though I did have a Panera oatmeal raisin cookie. I've been good at resisting, jut a few seconds of weakness. Yup, that's all it took me to gobble up that thing!

I went to our local Fleet Feet Saturday for their St. Patrick's Day sale. It was 10% off and I had a $25 certificate for previous shoe purchases. Every 10th purchase during the day got a special prize. I happened to be the 10th and got a nice green cotton t-shirt that said I got lucky at Fleet Feet. Also $10 off the purchase! It was wonderful. I got sandals that are moldable and DH got socks. It came to about $50 and I walked out the door for about $22.

Good morning Lean Meaners. I take a day off the DIS and I miss all kinds of things. Canoli fights??? Beer miles??? Oatmeal raisin cookies???

Debra: If DOOD is Dear One of Debra, maybe I should call my DH DROOL just cuz Dear One of Lisa would be DOOL but DROOL is much funnier :lmao: . I love the DOOD play on words. My DD13 calles EVERYONE dude!!

Bill: :shamrock:I have nothing else to say besides where's the Guinness? :hmghost:

Lily: I think we all fall off the wagon once in awhile. The important thing is to be aware of your triggers for eating and work on a strategy to avoid it. One thing that I do when we are out and I want something like that cookie is I split it with someone. Half is better than the whole thing. Just enough to make me happy. DS6 does not mind splitting a cookie with me which is a good thing. Now if I could just get rid of these Thin Mints!! One more sleeve and they are gone!!!

Vic: You can keep the pollen. It has started here but not as bad I am sure. Makes it hard for us runners with allergies/asthma to get outside which is where I so want to be.

Everyone else: A big warm howdy!!

I have a yogurt question. I have not been able to find the Seven Stars but I did read the back of the Stonyfield organic yogurt and there seems to be nothing odd in there. Cultured pasteurized organic nonfat milk, naturally milled organic sugar, organic blackberry preuee, natural flavor, pectin, organic carrot juice concentrate and vitamin D3. I know they add sugar but there are no other oddities. Is this close to your yogurt???

Yesterday was a trying day for me. DH wanted to spend the day together but there was not much to do. It was snowing/raining so no downhill skiing, no movie theaters are open here during mid week (yes small town blues) and we could not snowmobile due to open water everywhere and not wanting to trailer the sleds. So, we went snowmobile shopping instead as I have to beg, borrow and well, borrow a sled when we go. DH treated me to breakfast out which is an easy one not to screw up but then I did not eat lunch and for some reason drank coffee all day instead of water! :scared1: My only bad things which are not so bad in the big scheme of things. Today is another day to try and be good about eating my 3 meals and snacks and making good choices. Oh and yes, drinking my water. We have 3 more inches of snow on the ground this morning. It is the first day of spring for goodness sake  Will this madness never end????????? :sad2:

Hummmmm, Lisa. Your hubby had a whole day to spend with a pretty princess and he took you snow mobile shopping. Did he buy you a snow mobile? If he did that's cool but if not I need to have a talk with him. Kind of like around here a country boy takes a girl out on a date and takes her to car lots to look at new Dodge, Chevy and Ford trucks.

Debra you are a hoot, I love reading your witty posts. Should mine be DOOP or ASOP, (Adut Supervision of Panda) or KOP, (Keeper of Panda). I think I'll go with PPOP, Pretty Princess of Panda.

Ok Dave shut up, back away from the laptop and get your pudgy **** off to the Gym. Oh by the way I'm at 174.4 now, have been for a few days. That's down 8.2 lbs.

Walking Panda:hippie:

Unfortunately, no snowmobile for me. He tried to get me to buy one that I am really unsure about. I have to test drive their base model before I decide and we had kidlet issues to get back for and ran out of time. DH likes to talk....a lot. Cuts into the actual test drive time. Same thing with the car. He does not have a lot of hobbies and we are in a rural area which limits your activities somewhat. That and the weather. Anyone want 33 degrees and pouring rain today for their first day of spring?? :sad2:

I guess as long as Erica does not end up Princess Of Opinionated Panda or something of the sort, you are golden. If you start posting her as POOP or the old POOP, someone is gonna have to come down there and put some hurt on ya.....oh wait, Erica will probably do that all on her lonesome!! Send pics....:rolleyes1

Morning Meaners!

Today was too cold to get on the road bike, so I did 90 minutes on elliptical, 15 run on the TM (see, I'm getting the shorthand here).

Still need to stretch (which is what I am REALLY bad about not doing).

One yummy recovery shake and bagel w/peanut butter later and I am good to go!

have an awesome day everyone.

Mike

And a good morning to you all! How it going Lean Meaners??? It's another Thursday, almost Friday and the weekend! Yippee!

The weather hasn't cooperated with me the past few days.....still cold and rainy.....sigh......I can't wait for Spring!

Debra: I love your DOOD story.....mine would be DOOB ((((I don't think he would like that!)))) :lmao:

WWDave: The day you would be considered pudgy, is the day I quit! I wish I could just be pudgy.....it's taking an act of congress just to get off the overweight list.....sigh.....:confused3

Lisa: Snow again......yuck. I guess I can't complain about the rain, at least it's not snow.

Tiger Lily: You always are so helpful with the information on dietary issues. Thanks so much for sharing!

As for me......I am feeling good. I am working out well, and eating better. I am taking that for now. I am not losing anything right now, but since I have lost the 16 pounds since Jan, I am good for now. My body doesn't usually cooperate as good as it has, so I just have to weather the storm and stay on the even path. It will start coming off again, I just have to be patient. It could be worse..... I could have lost nothing, and still not fit into my clothes! :scared1: The owner of my gym just noticed my weight loss yesterday......some people are so observant! ((((I not usually that observant)))) It made me feel good that someone noticed! :cloud9:

Beth

Morning Lean Meaners!

Dave - congrats on the continued weight loss!

I've only lost 3 pounds so far but noticed yesterday that my jeans are fitting a bit different - a bit better. So the exercise must be doing something!

Lisa - My DH is the opposite - test drive like mad (we had our van for a 6 hour test drive) and forget to ask various questions. This is one reason why he can't do any large purchase alone.

Mike - good deal on getting swim lessons. You'll do great for sure! And I'm still impressed you can work out that early.

Lily - great deals! Dick Ponds has a 25% sale on running gear so going to get over there this weekend and see about finding more tights/shorts.

Debra - stinks that the gym has been so packed. Ours is like that early in the week then thins out the closer you get to Friday. Oddly last Sun afternoon was packed, too.

Howdy to everyone I know I've missed!

Got in 50 min on the bike last night then talked DH thru stretches after his TM time. He is so bad about stretching. Tonight is personal trainer time so weight and core work. Wanted to get in some elliptical time after that but someone coming to measure for new windows so will have to get home.

Was hoping to get in an outdoor bike on Saturday but we currently have winter storm warnings up for tomorrow so who knows.

Have a great day!!

Checking in. I have managed to keep my three pounds off despite eating like crap these past two days thanks to the ... FLU!

Yep, nine days away until my first half and I have a fever and a nasty chest thing going.

I need a WISH hug. :rotfl2:

SHAN!!!!

I am sure you are worried about your half, right now just get well. You won't have any problem with the half when you are well!

Shan...

I hope you feel better soon. Keep hydrating. I know you are well-prepared for the 1/2. You will do great!

Shan - rest and get well. :grouphug: I'm sure you'll do great on the 1/2 !

Mike: Wow, Lake Michigan?? Beautiful, as is Racine, but brrrrr. But I'm sure you're going to do fine; you'll have lots of time to train & I know you're paying attention to your fueling and recovery needs. Plus, you have us here to cheer you on! Good job being flexible with the training, btw; that's something I need to really work on.

Lily: I, too, have a special weakness for oatmeal raisin cookies; I've been known to say I'm in search of the perfect one. But I think you are right to focus on what you're doing right in eating & logging onto SP!! :yay: That's the kind of long-term lifestyle decisions we're making, ones that mean eating healthily with the occasional treat.

Fleet Feet sounds like a great place; we have one around here somewhere, and I'll try to talk DOOD into a little reconnaissance. Can't visit too many running stores, I say!

Lisa: DROOL cracks me up almost as much as DOOD does; I really do call DH, and others, dude. Yes, I have embraced my inner 13yo! I'm sorry your day was trying with regard to the no-lunch, coffee-instead-of-water situation. I'm sure you enjoyed time with DH. Do you think you'll get one soon, maybe after a couple more talky test drives? Hopefully they'll be on sale because it's spring, which I'm certain you'll get to experience sometime. ;)

The Stonyfield yogurt sounds tasty with all that organic goodness. The Seven Stars contains only milk & active cultures. I've been adding fresh fruit, nuts, granola. (I need to make my own granola, though.) Oddly enough, they were sold out of that brand this week--wow, it's popular here--so I bought two other brands to try: Butterworks Farms (VT) & Hawthorne Valley Farm (NY). Neither brand adds thickeners. Both are small farms, like Seven Stars. I like them both, especially the Butterworks.

Dave: Woo hoo for the 8.2 pounds! :woohoo: What's this pudgy you're throwing around so lightly--it's got to be just the term, because it can't be the weight you don't have! And I vote for PPOP because POOP probably would be misunderstood a lot.

Beth: I just love the fact that the owner of your gym noticed your weight loss. I don't know why, but that he or she noticed just seems to mean something extra special...maybe it's because of the context in which you see the owner. And 16 pounds is impressive--and not the end by any means. Like you said, we all have to be patient & keep doing the healthy things we do.

Liz: Don't you just love it when the jeans fit better. They're my litmus test, because I do so enjoy wearing jeans. How good of you to talk DH through stretching, as it's so important; that's one thing I need to add more of in my routine. (ADD week coming?) How do you enjoy your personal trainer--I've never had one and sometimes think I should invest. (I don't like people touching me, though. I know...weird, just ask my yoga instructor. :sad2:)

Shan: Oh, BIG WISH HUG!!  On the bright side, you got the flu during taper and I'm pretty sure you'll be over it by the 1/2. Maybe all this bed rest will be good for event. I'll keep my fingers crossed, anyway.
Sleep, keep drinking fluids, and know you've trained well for the event.

As for me: I got up this morning & went to the gym. I had to wait for about 5 minutes for a TM, but I got one. And while I thought about sitting on it & charging someone a fee if they wanted to use it right away--hey, I'm broke--I decided that it was in my better interest to do my run. It wasn't quite the magical run of Monday, but it was pretty good. Circuit training was meh, but I did it.

And here are my new babies:

shoes_iaec1041792.jpg

I will hug them, and love them, and name them George & Georgina. :cloud9:

We went to Elite Runners & Walkers, and I had a very good fitting experience. I was still running on the shoes that had given me all the blisters & black toenails during the Goofy, although I haven't experience the same degree of problems since then, probably because of the low mileage I'm been logging.

When I talked with the salesperson, his immediate reaction was that my shoes were too small, which would explain the black toenails. I said, "Yeah, I know that's what causes it." Then he examined my shoes and admitted I seemed to be wearing the right size. I didn't say it, but I thought, "Yeah, I know." We spent some time talking about my blisters, my running history (or lack thereof) and my plans. And then my fitting became this puzzle for him to figure out.

My new NB shoes, like my old ones, are both size 8, btw, and the difference in fit is small but noticeable. They're narrower in the heel than my last pair, but with the wide toe box my tootsies appreciate. These babies feel pretty darn good, even though I'll only really know how they work after I take them out for a test drive. Still, I have high hopes!

Oh, and one last thing: That green you see? It's lime green, which I take as a sign. After all, I didn't choose the pair based on their color but based on their fit. No, these shoes chose ME.

Lisa, what a day! I do hope you get that toy you want. Hey, at least you got time with DH. Share, my goodies? Share? Yeah, I do sometimes. It is good advice.

Dave good job on your weight AND your speed walking! You really are doing it!

Mike, you are doing fantastic with everything.

Unsolicited advice but please think about this. It's time you become a dedicated stretcher too. That is probably the most important part of your w/o--ending with stretching. The muscles over time will tighten too much and injuries will occur. Kind of like getting all warmed up and the rubberband snaps back/shrinks. If you don't allow for the stretching releasing of those bands/muscles you could be setting yourself up for injury in future. I was taught this back in the day I was in college for phys ed. Our Kids were also taught this concept when they did gymnastics so I guess it's still good info. Great injury prevention technique.

Shan, rest up and you will be fine for your event. It's taper time.

Liz, Yay! for better fitting jeans. I tried on my jeans last week. Not happening. I'm afraid when I go back to work I won't be wearing any slacks and we all wear slacks at work. I'll have to wear skirts, oh yech!

Beth, it just had to feel good when your weight loss was noticed. That is good.

Gotta go let out the dog. I've managed an ok day. Just no moving.

for the advice on stretching...I know I need to do more of it...I get terrible knee pain if I don't stretch out my hamstrings, go figure.

On the happy side, I just finished my first swim lesson...he said that I already have the difficult parts down pretty well, so there is just some technique refinement necessary :cool1:

I'll try this stuff out tomorrow during the 45 minute swim...

Night all, its been a very long day!

Debra your shoe story made me smile, it was so cute about the shoes choosing you. The funny thing is I believe in that kinda stuff.

Yes what Lily said about the stretching. I plan to go places with my racewalking and to get there I'm going to do the stretching. I have never been good about that with my walking so I'm going to do this. The people I know who are better/faster than I am all tell me the same thing, you have to stretch.

Have an awesome evening y'all

Walking Panda:hippie:

Got to the Y at 0500...waited 25 minutes for the lifeguard, while freezing in the shower. When he didn't show up, I went out to breakfast instead, and ate too much not healthy food. It was really good, but now I wish I hadn't caved in to the temptation of the breakfast skillet

Now its 0630, and I STILL need to swim 45 minutes and run 35...

Hope you aren't getting snowed/rained/baked in the heat today meaners!

Mike
