Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Good Morning Everyone,

Maria: I definitely needed a little boost with my eating last week. I too have given candy up for Lent, but found myself eating cookies and other sweets which more than made up for the lack of candy. I decided just for 24 hours I would try to avoid all added sugar. So only plain yogurt, natural peanut butter, no spaghetti sauce if it had sugar listed. I don't like artificial sweeteners so I stayed away from that. I was amazed that I was able to do it. I kept reminding myself that I was choosing to do it, I didn't have to do it and that somehow made it easier. I'm eating a lot more fruit now and find I really enjoy it more because it tastes much more flavorful. So far I've gone 7 days in a row without sugar. I get on the scale tomorrow so I'll see if I've been rewarded or not, but when I took an unofficial sneak peak over the weekend I was down a pound.

Beth: I'm glad you were able to run outside over the weekend. It really helps to get that fresh air. Good job on officially losing 15 lbs. Do you have a reward planned? I found if I rewarded myself at each 5 or 10 lb increment it gave me a little more incentive to keep at it.

Tracey: Sorry you got more snow. I'm with you on being ready for Spring. I'm glad you were able to run without dodging Hot Wheels traffic.

Dave: Hope your test walk went well.

Stacie: How smart of you to think ahead and order a medium shirt. I didn't do that this past year and now I just swim in the large shirt I have. I tried to trade, but would have had to wait around for 2 hours in order to do it. Congratulations on not needing a walk break.

Lisa: Congrats to your DD on the field hockey tourney. Both FH and gymnastics, wow, what an active girl.

Debra: Great job on being healthy during your movie marathon. I'm glad you were able to walk around during the breaks. That was a great idea.

As for me: I made a return trip to the doctor this week. She said the ear infection is gone, but the pressure I still feel is from conjestion which could take up to 3 weeks to clear. I'm now taking Sudafed and Nasonex to help it along. The Sudafed wipes me out even though it's the non-drowsy type. And I also think it affects how I sleep since I've woken up and can't get back to sleep for several hours every night since I started taking it. I did manage to get outside for a run yesterday since it was sunny and in the 40's. I only ran 2.5, but at least it's something.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Hey guys!!!

Cindy...Glad the ear infection is gone... I hope the rest runs away quickly! :goodvibes

Maria/Lisa...I am doing the BL, but not losing...I think I've voiced my concerns over this! :rotfl: Anyway, I think a personal food challenge would be good. Leave it up to the individual to set the goal...ie, drink x oz of water per day, or no soft drinks, no sweet tea, take out candy... etc... you get the idea. I know for me, I've decided to try to tweak small things and the next week or month, continue with that and tweak something different.

Ok...my 2 cents... I'm off now to report to Walt's Wishers my activity last night. (9 miles on the stationary bike).

Hope everyone has a great day!
Stacie

Good morning pretty princesses.:flower3:

Ok let me see if I have this right. We challange everyone on every team to either add something to their eating plan (example 8 glasses of water per day) or subtract something (like no more chocolate chip cookies). Each week we will start a new post and everyone who wants to will post what they are going to add or subtract.

This week will be an add week: what will you add to your diet plan?

Does that sound good Maria?

I walked 4 miles again today with a good stretching routine after. I'm doing my icing and advil now. Still took it slow and easy.

Walking Panda:hippie:

I was on another thread with a food/exercise challenge. What they do is calculate points per day/week. They had a red and blue team and the competition was who would get the most points per week. One point given for the following:

taking a vitamen daily
not eating after 8:00 pm
getting 25g fiber a day
drinking 64 oz water a day
1 pt per 15 min of exercise
getting 5-6 fruits and veggies a day

You kept track of the points you got every day, and then gave the team leader the point total at the end of the week.

Just an idea. I would love to be part of the challenge if we have it!

Mama Said Knock You Out Panda - Who you calling a princess? :confused3

Where's Bill? :lmao:

Yay Panda!!! I'm glad you are walking better now! :cool1:

Do you think we need a new thread or should we just report to our current captians? I'm thinking this may make it less complicated, but that's just me...

Things are still going well, I am very happy! :goodvibes I am not fixated on food right now, which makes my life a little easier. I am eating a little more at lunch on purpose right now. I feel better eating a bigger lunch and then a smaller dinner. I don't feel so out of control during the night time hours. I am not eating after 8:00 pm, and am getting all my water in. All the habits that I adopted 2 years ago, that sort of fell by the wayside during marathon training last year, I have re-instituted. I have a pretty firm grip on it right now......hopefully, I can keep it up!:thumbsup2

I didn't run yesterday. I took an hour Pilates class last night ((((which kicked my butt))))). I really like the class, and the teacher is excellent. It gives you a great work out, without hurting my back. I am sore this morning though! :confused3

Maria: Great idea about an eating challenge.......sort of the missing link to it all. I have many 'tips' I live by and would be happy to share!

Debra: How's it going? Haven't heard from you for awhile!

Cindy: Right now I don't feel like I need rewarded.....I am enjoying the feel of my clothes (that aren't so tight now!!!:cool1: ) When the weight starts coming off more slowly (((((probably right now!)))) I will need more positive reinforcements! I have a gift certificate from Christmas for a pedicure.....maybe I will use that after another 5 pounds come off! Sounds good to me!

I feel the biggest difference in the way I feel.....more energy, better sleeping, and the feeling of control. Running has been easier too. I guess 15 pounds lighter, makes a big difference on the old joints!

Stay strong Lean Meaners! My tips for today:

** I am limited my soda intake to one a day, and the rest is water.
** Trying to replace processed foods with homemade ones!
** Stretching more often to stay limber

Mama Said Knock You Out Panda - Who you calling a princess? :confused3

Where's Bill? :lmao:

Hi Vic, of course I wasn't calling you a princess, ogre maybe but not princess. I just thought you and Bill had left us.

Considering how downhill the conversation was going with Jeanne and the red shorts on the Pole-ish gents, I don't blame y'all for taking off.

Happy Panda:hippie:

OMG, all this time I thought they were POLE-ish.....:rotfl:

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: That was great.
Thanks for the image of the red shorts burned into my mind, Panda. I really don't need to see a picture. I'm not sure what's worse, those shorts, or guys who wear the shorty McShort shorts and then put their leg on a chair in a Captain Morgan stance. Oh my!!!!:confused3 (It's a long story, but when I taught, I had a parent come into my class and do this).
Snow's fallin' again so it's back to the treadmill. Take care all and have a great day.

Hello everyone....can I come back now?
I thought I had no internet today, but it's actually just my email that I can't get into for some reason.
Glad to hear that everyone is on the mend from both sickness and injury.
I am feeling very blonde today....decided I was going to try this racewalking thing for my 2 mile fast walk. So I took off and was really hauling it....it truly does make you go much faster. Well before I finished 1/4 mile, my shins were screaming and I had to stop at the quarter-mile mark. Guess I probably should have warmed up first......
I love the idea of the diet challenge. I definitely have a problem with taking in enough fluids. Last night John and I were sitting in a Mexican restaurant at around 7:30 pm waiting for our Monday $3 margaritas, when I suddenly realized that all I had to drink the entire day was half a cup of tea in the morning. I figured I might seriously blow my liver with the margarita so I quickly downed half my water. I think one of the reasons why I can't lose weight is because I hardly ever drink anything and that's real bad. So if I can get points (or even kudos) for drinking my water that should help me alot.

Jean, I'm wicha on that! I know I must stay dehydrated on a daily basis! I only drink at lunch and sometimes that's it. We have cereal so much for dinner that I don't consume an liquids other than milk!

I really have to work on my water intake!!!

Pole-ish...That was just wrong! :lmao: But funny! :rotfl:

Ok, so here are a few more thoughts on the nutrition challenge -- I can barely keep up with the threads we have, so one more might break me :scared: But if that's the easiest way, I'm in.

I'm so glad everyone has all these great ideas! I'm sure that we can agree on the best plan after we get a sense of whether this is something all the teams would be interested in.

If some folks don't want to do it that's fine -- and it doesn't matter to me if we get points or not. I do like the idea of tracking it, but simply as a number or percentage of the team that made their goal, we don't have to get more miles/hours points for it. It could also be tracked just based on the number of team members participating -- i.e. if you have 14, and only 10 play, if 10 meet their goal you are at 100%. Whatever we do, I don't want to put more of a burden on our captains. They are awesome :thumbsup2 :worship:

I think of it as an added bonus for accountability. I'm getting on my TM because I don't want to let my team down, I'll also drink my water for the same reason :woohoo:

Has anyone taken this idea back to their teams? What are people saying? If no one wants to do it, I think it can be a Lean Mean activity. I'm just excited about the team aspect. :yay: It sounds like adding water may be a goal for alot of us.

Maria

I think this thread is related to this...

Sounds like a good idea to me! :)

Stacie

Wow, a couple of days off & you all brainstorm this great challenge. I'm so proud of our Lean Meaners! You all have such good ideas! I see there's a thread up for the teams, so I'll be sure to check it out. I'm in for the challenge, regardless...

Lisa: The hockey tournament sounds and your DD's performance is quite impressive, I think. And in terms of her athleticism and determination, she sounds like her mother! :goodvibes I loved the story of your longlasting, whirlwind life with DH.

Dave: The lighthouse-ritual story is beautiful. You and Erica sound made for one another! And I hope your Achilles heel is rehabing nicely, and I'm glad you were able to do your 4-miler.

Stacie: Congrats on your longest run...yet! :) I'm sure you'll rock the Minnie.

Tracey: Another romantic DH story. :cloud9: I'm glad you had a Matchbox free TM time, although I can see where Timmy would want to to place his cars on the track.

Beth: Yea for the confirmed 15 pounds and two days of outdoor running. Both are real boosts for the spirit!! And I love your list of habits--gives me tons of things to work on.

Maria: Can I strive to intensify my worst habits??? It might be easier, and I so like being able to say I've succeeded at something. :rotfl: Okay, I admit your idea is better and more in the spirit of WISH, so I guess I'll go with the crowd. You're so right about the team aspect, too. I'll do it for you, if not for me. (And then these better habits will become all about me, hopefully.)

Cindy: GREAT job on giving up candy for Lent & you 24-hour-turned-into-a-week, no-added-sugar challenge! I hope the after-effects of your ear infection continue to subside, as I can only imagine how much your affected sleep cycle affects everything else.

Jeanne: :woohoo: for trying the racewalking. I mean to give it a shot someday.... And I'm with you on water intake...it's one of my consistent challenges; even though I've been doing better in the past couple of months, there are too many days where I'm downing water right before bed. And you know what that does for my sleep pattern.

As for me: I was feeling kind of squicky all day yesterday. Sore calves--and from Saturday's movie-fest, who would have thunk it?--and a headache always on the horizon, plus this lurking malaise. I worked out and worked on some professional projects to try & break out of the mood, but no go. I finally gave up on the day & crawled into bed early. The feelings hung around this morning, but seem to be subsiding. I don't know what was wrong, :confused3 but I'm glad it seems to be passing without incident.

Now for the good news: I weighed in yesterday, and I'm down 1.5 pounds from last week. (Yesterday I didn't even care--how's that for weird?) So I'm supermotivated for a diet/nutritional challenge!

Good morning Lean Meaners! I thought I would start this ball rolling today! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Debra: Yippeee!!!!! 1.5 pounds is great! Yeah!!!! Keep up the good work!
So nice when the scale moves in the right direction!

Tracey: Your matchbox story made me laugh! I can see my kids doing the same thing......got to love the kidlets!

Jeanne: Congrats on the race walking.....I am sure it is using muscle you haven't used in awhile!

I continue bringing my breakfast and lunch.....saving money, and calories!

Beth

Where is everyone????? :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 Very quiet today, you all better not be off having a party :jumping1: without me!:headache:

Beth

Hi Everyone!

Unfortunately it is my busy season again, and for some reason my employers expect me to be working. Don't they know I have many DIS threads to keep up with :confused3 :rotfl:

I did my long walk Sunday, and an hour on the TM last night. Trust me, if it weren't for the challenge, I would have gone to bed and ate something tasty and terribly wrong. ;)

I am slowly eating better. Looking forward to starting the Lean Mean challenge on Saturday. I haven't decided yet what I'll add. I'm tempted to make it water to see how that affects my hunger. I think I'm really dehydrated when I think I'm hungry some of the time.

Beth -- You are not alone, trust me! Keep the good habits coming, these are great ideas for all of us

Debra -- Congrats on the weight loss, always a wonderful thing!:yay:

Lisa -- Clearly your dd is living by your example. How great that you can be an athletic role model. :woohoo:

Dave -- We all owe Erica a great debt for taking care of our Panda! You two are a great couple :lovestruc

Stacie -- You are doing great!:cool1:

Cindy -- I am definitely eating cake and cookies I wouldn't have considered before I gave up candy. I'm not sure this is much of an improvement...gotta get it together like you did!:upsidedow

Tracey -- Everyone has these great romantic meeting stories. I have Romeo and Juliet for grown-ups. DH and I worked for opposing city departments (he was trying to demolish housing for economic development, I was trying to perserve it for historic preservation). I had to attend their staff meetings to represent us, and I was warned to be on my guard because these were "evil" people. Well, I guess I didn't listen very well because when dh asked me out I went. ;) Our departments were mortal enemies, and when I married dh my boss thought I was consorting with the enemy...it was bizarre. She really felt I betrayed her by marrying him. :confused3 She was a weird one, anyway.

Jeanne -- I will give you all the kudos you can handle! :worship: What a fantastic example you are for all of us!

Ok, off to write some more. When I take a work break I post on the DIS. I suspect I should get up and leave the computer instead :lmao:

Go Lean Meaners! :cheer2:
Maria

:guilty: I have had the flu and now I am getting over it and let's just say I was very, very, very hungry when I went grocery shopping. It's a tragedy marked by serious overeating of chocolate, caramel popcorn! :scared1: But I feel better, now. :rotfl:

Isn't it amazing how if you CAN'T have a thing, all you can think of...is THAT thing and then compensate with other things that we don't need, either!!! :sad2:
