I think it was largely UK based - every school had some, sported one of the earliest and most elegant GUI, the "WIMP". Was amazingly powerful for its day. Lost ground to Sinclair eventually due to cost.

About 10-years ago I spent a holiday in Sir Clive Sinclair’s flat on Trafalgar Square -great view!

Clive Sinclair apparently had one hell of a temper on him… he was also a genius. Came up with the first ever sub-£100 computer. It was rife with problems, like most of his projects, but at that price, everybody wanted one. I recommend watching "Micro Men" - brilliant piece of cinema.

I didn’t realize it was his place until I got there and noticed the books and awards around the place. Sounds like he was quite an interesting guy! Much like the Sinclair C5 tricycle/vehicle…

He was OBSESSED with that thing. Insisted it wasn't a pipe dream. Eventually because of this addiction amongst several others, the British Government gave up funding him. So he just established ANOTHER Sinclair business. I remember his computers… typing on the keyboards was like trying to type braille through gloves! And they kept going wrong… but despite these limitations, he knew the landscape commercially and did really well, until big American companies like AMSTRAD and IBM came along and started to dominate. Then he and Acorn were muscled out of the business altogether.

You can still see the C5 in many design museums across the world.

Some of my favourite games EVER are retro, from text based adventures (I was rubbish at these) to Lemmings, Zool and Civilisation. There's a reason such games STILL attract enjoyment and fame… just look at Doom. Decades old, technologically outdated, but still loved by millions the world over.
