Be aware if traveling to WDW within the next few days

Oh, well. My hand sanitizer is only 60% alcohol, but it'll have to do!

Get the Lysol foaming hand sanitizer. It's kept in Wal-Mart at the registers. 65% alcohol. It has a pleasant scent to it and doesn't make your hands feel sticky like Germ-X can.

We were there from 12/20-12/26-- one of us ended up sick while there (12/25) and at centra care; I got sick the day we got home and tested positive for flu (as in real thing-not the generic "i have the flu" AND i had the flu vaccine get it every year). Definitely got it while i was there given incubation periods, and the only off property thing we did was Centra Care. :sad2:
**and YES we did take all the precautions of hand cleaning etc! its near impossible unless you are wiping down every ride seat/bars etc before you ride.

I'm confused...Were you diagnosed with Influenza, which is the 'flu'? If so, this is airborne and is passed by sneezing and coughing. In my city, all cases of Influenza must be reported to our local Health Unit.

If not Influenza, then I am assuming you mean gastroenteritis, which is commonly called 'stomach flu' or 'winter vomiting' disease - the virus that we have all been discussing? If so, then this is passed by touching handrails, etc. as has been discussed extensively in this thread.

Just thought that it would be important for you to clarify this as people with asthma or other respiratory illnesses would be in serious trouble if they contact Influenza, which is the real 'flu', so some people might need to be aware if this is going around WDW as well.

Hope you are feeling better soon, Tiger

OK, just read this thread from start to finish for 2 reasons.
1. I am still recovering from the "GI Bug". I got sudden stabbing awful abdominal pains on Sunday night(I can only explain them as labor pains, or for some, really bad, sharp gas pains). That lasted for 2 hours before the Diarrhea started. That lasted another 24 hours, just pure diarrhea and dry heaves (vomiting if I ate or drank anything, including water!) I went to the ER, where a bazillion others were waiting because they too, had the "GI Bug" It is rampant here in Maryland right now. All hospitals in the Baltimore area are on "yellow alert" meaning ambulances should go to the next available ER sine they have no ER beds available! I had IV fluids, and 3 doses of Zofran and they wanted to keep me overnight. I'd rather be in my own bed and bathroom, so I went home (Tuesday at midnight). I am just starting to eat now, and for the first time in days was able to sit up for longer periods of time.

2. we are leaving for WDW in 22 days. I am almost hoping that my kids get it right now, so I don't have to worry as much then. So far, no one else has gotten sick in my house, but I'm just waiting. It comes on SO fast and out of the blue, you just don't know.

Don't want to scare people, and I am NOT one of the people who get on the internet and search out all the horror stories, etc. But I am also not one who typically goes to the ER, in fact have only been to an ER 3 times in my life (and I am almost 40) but finally gave up the ghost and went on Monday Afternoon. It was that bad, that painful, that miserable. Make sure you stay hydrated at the parks as much as possible, and be prepared, as it can hit you suddenly without warning (which is why so many are found out at the park puking, there is NO warning for you!)

:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: Here's hoping for pixie dust to take away that nasty ol' bug!!!!:wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

We are still here and doing fine health wise. Onsite WDW CR for 6 days onsite US 2 days TS resort for 7 days. We leave tomorow. Happy new year by the way. 3 of the 4 of us have asthma. I did finally see puke on the floor just as you enter the restroom at the Premium outlet mall yesterday New0Years eve. Good luck to you all.

Well I think we're set! We leave on Tuesday, and we've stocked up on hand sanitizing wipes and gels, DH picked up a pack of sani-wipes that they use to wipe down the ambulance and a couple of other "goodies" for us to use LOL, and FIL gave us phenergen and OTC stuff galore for our bags. LOL

This makes it easier. It's going to be much less of a worry thinking about the possibility of getting sick if we know we have plenty of things to help deal with the situation (our group consists of 18 people!). That's what I was worried about- not so much about getting sick, but just about getting sick while AWAY from home and all the stuff we would "need".

We were at POP 12/9-12/16 and I knew before we went that people were reporting illness.

We are just leaving WDW and so far 3 of 8 have gotten it. 9yo nephew got it real bad on Christmas Eve. His mom then got it but not as bad on 12/27 right before the Luau. I got it last night around 11:30 and feel like crap and we are driving back home as I type. We just hope we get home before anyone else gets it.

One side note...at 1900 Park this morning, we saw two guests go to the buffet with their spoons and taste items.... And we wonder why this is spreading.

We just got back today. We stayed at POP and visited all the parks. I didn't hear anyone talking about being sick or see anyone sick. I was so paranoid after reading all the posts about sickness. I did make sure to wash hands frequently and I wiped down the hotel room with antibacterial wipes.

I've been at WDW for 9 day so far dining at buffets, quick service and regular table service restaurants and no sickness. :goodvibes Granted we've been washing our hands a lot, using hand sanitizer and making sure the temperature of what we eat is supposed to be what it should be--hot things hot, cold things cold.

Please tell me you notified a CM! I had to report a lady doing something like that at Boma once.

Very sorry y'all caught the virus!

great idea getting the phenergen, I think im going to ask our dr about filling a script before we go just in case... our daughter dehydrates easily with tummy bugs, this medicine has really helped her in the past. thank you for the idea

I have a friend who is a CM down there and she had the bug last week I think? I know it was very recent that she was really sick. Didn't ask her details but she said she was miserable.

Hopefully the bug will get nipped in the bud soon.

On a side note - YUCK!!! I can't believe people would do such a thing like take a spoon up to a buffet to sample something knowing that there's a horrible stomach bug going around down there. That should've been posted on the "Grossest thing you've seen at WDW" thread! :rotfl:

I was INFLUENZA positive. not a generic 'flu bug'/stomach virus. I had an influenza test done in a doctors office and it was positive. It was definitely picked up at WDW, as I was diagnosed the day i came home-- we had been there for 7 days prior--according to my doctor i had to have gotten it there. (and i will also mention that mine was the first positive influenza test my doctors office had seen this season--and they believe in our area-- but NOT so in Florida according to my docs office).
**also a note, this influenza did not 'appear' as typical/heavily respiratory as often described--i had a cough, but more fever/ache/stomach--without the test being done one wouldn't have been able to distinguish it from a typical stomach bug.

Do you know if it cultured out positive? I am a lab technician and the first few positive rapid results we get - we have to send out for culture to make sure it's real. Considering the time of year, I'm guessing yours was NOT a false positive and real. Sorry you got so sick - that stinks. I wonder if they didn't get the strain right again this year if you got a flu shot and still got it. That could also be why your symptoms weren't the same as usual since you had some immunity.

Zofram is MUCH MUCH better than phenergan. Phenergan makes you feel druggy, zofram you feel totally normal, you can just eat without yakking.

I think it just depends on how you respond to it. I know some people who despise Zofran but do really well with Phenergan. ;)

Same here. Just got back from six days. The only sign of illness I saw (and who knows what the story was) was an ambulance came to All Stars Sports to take someone out of the Ladies room. Could have been anything. At 50s Prime Time on NYE, I saw a CM sweeping up some sawdust. Could have been alcohol.

Seriously, we saw no signs, heard no stories. And we stayed in Beach Club for two days...

There is a nasty, nasty stomach bug that is plaguing many of the resorts. I am no Pollyanna, and know that there is a high possibility of catching a stray bug at WDW due to the sheer volume of people......but this bug is highly contagious and had all the CM's and resort employees talking. Most seemed to think it was the Norwalk virus.

It took my family out one by one during our 8 night stay. It came on viciously and violently. It started out with nausea and then forceful vomiting and diarreah for about 8 hours. It was so bad that all of us had accidents and could not make it to the bathroom (to vomit) at least a few times. The staff at the YC and BC were wonderful and told us that they and SSR had been hit the hardest. There were literally guests puking outside of the resort, in the food courts and bathrooms!

Just wanted to put this PSA out here for the DISers. Just remember to wash, wash, WASH your hands while down there!! Oh, and I pity the family that was assigned our room after we left....:scared:

We were there December 4th - 12th..and it took us all down, one by one, as well.

Started with my wife and ended with oldest DD and I, hitting all 5 of us. The boys in the party didn't get the "upper end" manifestation, but had to deal with the "lower end" manifestation. The girls all got both.

Gross topic, I know....

We "lucked out" (if you CAN luck out with a stomach bug) in that it hit the majority of us at NIGHT, and seemed to move pretty quick. 8 to 12 hours of the tough stuff, then another 4 of feeling lousy (but no "tough stuff), and then back to normal. Only DW had it during the day, and she INSISTED we continue on in the park that day.

Overall, the whole viral run through didn't ruin our vacation, but it sure slowed us down a lot.
