Banking points - what did I do wrong?

So I'm only 1.5 yrs into DVC so I'm just trying to understand if I made a mistake somewhere or what. My contract is 160 points at AKV, Use year February.

Banked 2019 points to 2020: 147 points
2020 points: 160
2020 points borrowed to 2019: 15 (realized I needed to add a night to trip after I banked points)

So Total points at start of 2020 use year: 292.

In 2020, I used:
Stay 1 - 139 points
Stay 2 - 26 points
Total - 165

So that would mean I had 127 points leftover. However, I was only able to bank 101 points. Which leaves me 26 points that expire at the end of January (current plan is to do a 1-night staycation at Grand Californian, but I don't know if that will end up happening due to availability/reopening timeline, and I would much rather have those assigned to 2021 since I have 3 DVC trips planned then).

At no point did I borrow from 2021 points or cancel under 30 days. I did have a lot of book/cancel situations when I tried to piece together a longer trip for Stay 1, but the transactions still work out that I used the 139 points from 2020 and my point balance never went to 0.

Did I do something wrong or is this a DVC glitch? I can try calling member services, but I want to make sure there's not an obvious mistake I made first!

It looks like your Stay #2 was booked before you banked your points or it's quite a coincidence that the unbankable points also is 26. Once you've booked a reservation the system will not reallocate unless you somehow direct it to. Assuming you booked that before you banked you needed to call MS to ask them to reallocate banked points to it or you could probably have done it online yourself once you had banked. A wrong assumption? If it is correct and if you haven't take that trip yet then you can still fix it.

One thing I've never encountered is the system not using borrowed and banked points before current points so I'd vote not a glitch in the system but rather the sequence of events.

Yes, we are sort of in the same place. I was looking at My DVC/My Dashboard - the box in the left corner before clicking the Manage Your Points will show the summary of points available by UY, and will separate out available banked points.

Thanks for emailing MS about changes to better show which points are used by UY for booked and completed reservations. I’ve had to move several around this year, and have had to email MS to figure out where my banked points are to be sure I get them used before I lose them. Hopefully when things are more back to normal they’ll have resources to get that change scheduled.

I'm still not certain where you are looking? The box on my dashboard where you would click to Manage Your Points shows the points available in the Current UY (all lumped) and the points available for the next UY (all lumped) and it also breaks out how many points are in holding. It does not show banked or borrowed separately.

What you wrote, is the way I thought it was represented too :confused3

True story.... DW & I also used "new points" before "old points" once. We called.
DVC rep kindly altered the point usage, to use oldest points first - allowing us to BANK newest points.

So? If unsure? I would suggest CALL - have a speakerphone, and a good 3 hours :).
Three hours oh my.good advice

I called because I was having trouble cancelling a reservation online, around noon on Sunday. Wait was 10 minutes at most.

CM cancelled my reservation, moved my borrowed points back and banked the rest.

If there are available banked points, it will show in that same box with the Prior UY - ie UY 2019.

If I understand correctly you're expressing that any points available to use, for example, in 2019 will show. So banked 2018 points plus current 2019 points are all part of the total? If so then yes. And if any were borrowed from 2020 into 2019 then those would show there as well.

What would be helpful to perhaps prevent what the OP discovered is to have the different points show up there individually. So for the 2019 UY line there would be columns for how many banked left in the UY, how many current left in the UY and how many borrowed left in the UY if any. One could also dream that they could show how many transferred points left to use too. The holding column is useful but the other statuses would be useful too.

Sorry if someone already said this, but I just wanted to say this has happened to me, and when I have called Member Services, they have always sorted it out for me - I would definitely call. Just didn't want you to lose points for no reason. :) Pain to be on hold, but worth it not to lose points!

It is always worth a call to DVC MS to see what they can do. But, if the unused points are banked points and the member doesn't have an upcoming stay to reallocate the points to, and the points weren't the result of a Covid affected reservation, I don't see DVC MS allowing banked points to be rebanked.

What was your situation where they helped you out?

I agree that it is worth the call, but once the trips have been completed, they can not go back and change them.

However, if there are still trips, as mentioned, things can be reallocated.

The only time they can not is if you have several trips and want them moved around between them, That can not be done,,,only points sitting in your account not used can be switched around.

Sorry if I wasn't following her situation as closely - I assumed she had upcoming trips too. In my case, I had to move trips because of Covid, so I had some banked points on a trip that was later cancelled, and a current reservation that had been made with current points, so when I cancelled the banked points trip, they were going to expire. I asked them to move them around so it was using the banked points and they were able to, but I did have to do that in person on the phone, and I did have an upcoming booking.

You can also call member services and ask about each reservation and whether they are using all current use year points or all banked points, or a variation of. It's a pain, they get a little annoyed by it, but... there's no other way to know which points are being used in your reservations.

You can go in and choose the modify option and go thru as if you are rebooking and the summary there shows. That's how you can reallocate the points yourself too.

This made me laugh! I called DVC MS once and asked a CM to figure this out for me on a reservation and they got exasperated and said "well I'd have to go through all your reservations, and you have so many contracts (I have 13) and you have a bunch of modified and deleted reservations!" "this would take me a long time!" I just told them to forget it -- I figured they'd just give me wrong information anyway.

Now I just do what the PP said. I just go in and modify, I don't change anything and look at the points summary at the end. Much easier.

So, my concern is that I have 1 banked point in a VGC room (November), and wanted to try to move that one banked point to a reservation in mid September. I was told that I would have to cancel the VGC room to reallocate it to the mid September reservation. They can't just move it unless I cancel the VCG reservation, which I'm afraid to do bc I may lose it. :(

Unfortunately this is true. They can only move points around if they are not in a reservation,
