I am the world's worst baker..everything I try out seems to fail horribly. DH knows this. Still, he bought me Alton Brown's new baking book, "I'm Just Here for MORE Food" for Christmas. Since we went to the store last night, I was able to buy some ingredients for a recipe I'm going to try this afternoon. I believe in the book it's called Saintly Saltines.

The butter (unsalted of course) is in the fridge, per AB's directions. The kosher salt, flour and rolling pin are at the ready.

When DS goes down for his nap this afternoon, I'm going to attempt to make the Saintly Saltines. Let's hope I don't screw it up. So, Tag Fairy, anybody who has baking PD, please dust me with it and dust me good. :)

I'll report back later and let you know what happened.

*ETA--I followed the directions..eh..so-so. I know you're supposed to be exact on this and AB stresses that heavily. But I started getting things together and realized I had no dry measuring cups. So I had to do the best I could. I also don't have a food processer (which AB suggests using to sift ingredients together),so I attempted to use DH's Magic Bullet to aerate my flour and salt. It did a passable job. It wasn't great, mind you, but passable.

Anyway...I should go take some pictures of my 'crackers' before I eat them all. They are that good! I'm not a super cutter and I didn't use a ruler, so all of my crackers are whompasided and don't look remotely like a saltine cracker you'd buy at the store. The first set that went in kinda got all puffy, which made me think to dock them (i.e. go gently psycho with a fork) and that took care of the puffiness. They didn't come out as crispy as I thought they would, but they're still REALLY REALLY good.

Just a little note on the food processor. If you need to sift dry ingredients together, you can place them in a bowl and use a wire whisk to whisk them together. It does a great job. BTW I used to be a pastry chef, so I know what I'm talking about.

I don't have one of those either. Guess I'm going to have to suck it up and go buy one. :teeth:

Here's a picture of some of the crackers. I had to put them away to keep from eating them all they are SO good!
