Bag check guard opened wallet

I know I am going to get flamed for this but today we went through security at EPCOT and the guard was looking through my backpack and then he did something that irked me a little. He took my wife's zipper wallet and opened it, with her cash and credit cards in it. Even in the name of security, he could have asked me to open it instead of just taking it upon himself.

And?? Unless you've got something to hide, what's the big deal? Sure, I suppose he could have asked, but to complain about that part is seriously nit picking.

I'm sure he was just doing his job and it never even occurred to him that you felt he was being invasive. This is what they do, all day, every day.
It's sad that this is our society today, that in order to go to any event that involves hordes of people we need to submit to a search. But, it is what it is and by entering the gates we consent to the search.

I always carry a small first aid kit stuffed with things like band-aids, moleskin, bonine, tums, children's Tylenol, Excedrin, etc. It's a little white box (you have probably seen one like it at your local pharmacy). At DHS, the guard opened that up when looking through my bag. It kind of surprised me bc I am not used to my bag being so thoroughly checked but it didn't really bother me.

I disagree about "unless you have something to hide, what's the big deal"! The big deal is what could they possibly find in a small, thin wallet that is worth searching for when people are walking through with bulging pockets unchecked? The real-life risk to the person with the wallet is that their cash, credit cards, license, etc. could easily fall out and be lost... and for WHAT? There is not going to be something threatening in there (especially compared to all the other things they turn a blind-eye to) to make it worth the risk of losing your cash and credit cards. They really have NO business in there! If you are entering a different country and customs wants to check some thing in your wallet because they want to verify your identity or something, sure. Why on earth would Disney do this other that to cross lines and harass. Common sense....

We've been here for two weeks now. They've gone through my wallet as well. I've seen them empty everything out of people's backpacks and go through everything very carefully.

Bag check has been very thorough. I like it. :thumbsup2

Normally at Disney I use a very small wallet that is barely bigger than a credit card, and they don't bother it. But one day I stopped at Epcot after work and had my normal zip around wallet that is a little larger than a checkbook. They did open it and look inside. I figured it was because a knife or blade could be in it, so it didn't bother me. The slots for the cards are so tight, nothing can fall out (heck, I can't even get them out when I need to half the time, lol!). I would say my wallet is about 7 inches long or so, and about an inch thick.

Razor blades. Maybe they had a reason to be looking for them yesterday. They have EVERY right to check, and are crossing no lines nor harassing you. When you purchase your ticket, you are agreeing to their security measures. Common sense, indeed.

We went to an event a few months ago where the Secret Service and FBI were present. Not only did they look in our wallets, they dumped everything out of them, looked between each bill, card, and pocket in there, and swabbed them. This was after our bags and wallets were x-rayed, and we went through scanners, and were sniffed by K9 security. They also turned our phones off and on again. Should I have told them they were going overboard and harassing me?

went thru the same bag check 3 days ahead of you and was told to unzip any bag so unzipped my zippered wallet before we got to check point. so not surprised he opened. hardest art for me was walking thru metal detector without cane then having to be wanded because of metal in hand after being told that would not set off. I have 3 screws in hand

They ask you to have all sections opened while in the bag check line. I usually open everything up while in line to get through quicker. Clear Ziplocs of stuff taken out of the bag help to speed the lines along too. They are just keeping us safe.Airports deal with these issues too. Emptying pockets should also be enforced. It shouldn't be so random.

Really, if it bothers you that much, don't go. I'm honestly not trying to be argumentative, but it's literally Rule A. on the park rules:

GENERAL RULES

Welcome to the Walt Disney World Resort. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all our park Guests, please respect the following rules:

  1. All persons, bags, parcels, clothing, and other items may be subject to screening/security checks at the Park entrances and also within the Parks.

My wallet doesn't zip, and yesterday they opened it without asking

I know. Crazy.

But when I walked into the security lines, I gave them permission to search my belongings

At the same time, I saw someone escorted out because they were carrying something in their bag that wasn't allowed in the parks. (I'm assuming) nothing dangerous since it was a coordinator that did the escorting, but if security feels that checking wallets is an appropriate use of their time then that's what they will do

I was concerned about my sunglass case. It's real springy, and the glasses tend to just pop out onto the ground if you aren't careful. I specifically halted him and put my hand on the case when he pulled it out, and then immediately explained the situation and offered to open it for him. He declined to look inside and put it back in the bag. I wear glasses and sometimes need my prescription sunglasses in the park. So, I don't really have the option of not bringing them. I can't see well enough to not wear glasses at all, and I don't want to wear my polarized sunglasses indoors.

Maybe they were checking to see if you had one of these:

I doubt it. Until they start sending everyone thru the metal detector to cover the cargo shorts-it really is just not as effective as it should be. It's great they could now find a knife credit card while the person with a weapon in the cargo shorts strolls in. Or hey- what about the 3D plastic knives that you can now print and not have noticed during a metal detection screener? It's the rules- I get it- I think it makes the naive feel secure.
