This past February I was flying JFK to MIA on AA and then home FLL to ISP on SW. (That becomes important later)

Two days before departing, it was cleart hat there was gooing to be a Major snow storm in NYC. Other Airlines were letting you change starting two days before the storm but not AA. They only started allowing changes 1 day before the storm. BUT, they would only let you change if the same fare class was available. Since I was on a 21 day purchase, guess how that worked out, Other airlines (JB, SW) were letting you switch based on capacity.

Eventually teh flight was canceled and they offered me a replacement flight 4 days later. That wa sthe date I was scheduled to fly home to ISP on SW. I aksed if they could get me to MIA in time to make my flight back. Anyway they gave me a refund.

SW, even though they were flying 4 days later, allowed me to get a full credit (subject to expiration)

So a SW credit plus an AA refund plus a Give-a-day promotion and there is a surprise trip.

A few lessons:
1. If you are flying in a bad weather time (ie NYC in Winter) be careful about splitting airlines. If the first half of your trip is canceled, you may get screwed on your return trip if you have to adjust schedules or cancel

2. Check what the policy i son bad weather reschedules. Its always tough with capacity what it is but AA wont even let you try. SW would let you try, even though with so many cancels it may not have worked

3. Consider how friendly an airlien is if you have issues and need to change. Again, a tip of the hat to SW. Honorable mention to JB which will give you credit if you buy a fare and the price drops. Most wont do that.

$. A canceled 4 day to miami replaced by a bonus week in WD is a good trade off

GREAT STORY !!!

FANTASTIC POST !!!

GO ME !!!!:cool1:

(Sorry I always wanted to that. Now back to our regularly scheduled posts)

Or you could have physically reported to the airport at the time you wanted to leave early and beat the storm.

If the only reason they don't let you stand by early is that you refused to ante up more money, and also your original flight is cancelled, weather included, then the airline has actually violated the contract of carriage by not making reasonable effort to get you there.

Care to actually provide some evidence of this?

I am not sure I follow.

In regards to going early, I was supposed to leave on Wednesday. I wante to go Tuesdya to beat the storm. If they would not make a seat available under a weather policy I saw no reason to go to the airport. Other airlines like JB and SW were accomodating. AA was not. Also, without a resrevation before a storm I see little benefit to dragging everyone to an airport and standing online in the hopes of getting something

As to violating contract of carriage, I dont know the technicalities behind it. they did not fly me and i got a full refund, so no complaints there.

If you wanted to get to Disney that badly you would jump through a few more hoops.

Older children (at least junior high age) would probably push you to go to the airport early if you explained everything to them.

In addition it would be foolish on the part of the airline to not fill up the seats of earlier planes with people sitting there waiting; this means fewer people to have to take care of in case of a cancellation.

Still waiting for you to provide evidence that the airline would have to do anything for them.

You give this advice all the time and I still think it is bad advice. The last place I want to be when a storm may be coming is at the airport, days before my flight, without confirmation that I can change my flight.

If it were that important to me, I'd pay the change fee. I would not just drive to the airport (and I only live 15 minutes away).

I agree that the last thing I would want to do is to go to the airport before a storm and try to get on a plane without a reservation. I cant see that working out. Particularly this past winter where the whole system was backed up with cancellations. If they told me on the phone they could not get me a seat for 4-5 days why would being there do anything different?

As for change fees, i still think its crazy that AA was charging a change in fare to leave the day before a storm while JB and SW were filling planes based on availability.

Keep in mind that we are not talking a change fee (like maybe 50-75 or 100) we were talking about a whole fare change. Can you imagine what a 1 day advance purchase is from NY to FLA on AA?

I fully agree with that statemnet but the airlines did not seem too. Even though I had a nonstop from JFK. I offered to fly EWR, JGA or JFK and make changes or fly American Eagle. They did nothing for me.

In teh end it cost them as I got my money back from them
