Hi, other Lulu!

Add me to the list. I think it's pointless. What emotion does it express anyway? My grandfather died from emphysema and I knew I'd never smoke after that.

The drinking one doesn't bother me- a casual cocktail or glass of wine is fun and could even be good for your health. Cigarettes lead to lung, mouth and throat cancer and emphysema. It's a different thing to me.

OOOOOOH- but as long as YOU say the drinking is fine...AND FUN-- IT CAN STAY?!

umm how about the innocent people that are killed drunk driving every day?
...how about liver disease?
...under age drinking?

this subject just makes me boil!

stop telling me what is right and wrong becasue you believe it is!

i said this before, I:

:smokin: :happytv: :moped: :smokin: :wizard: party: :drinking1 :smokin:

LEAVE ME ALONE I AM HAVING FUN!

Alcohol can lead to alcoholism which can lead to liver disease which can lead to death. Let's be consistent here....

ANY form of cancer is a bad thing...but come on, we're really pushing the whole PC thing because people are afraid of the big bad smiley. Do you all protest Disney itself for having designated smoking spots? I would think THAT would be more influential than a smiley.

Oh I hear ya on that. Let's not forget the combination of emoticons as well. What about these two together: :drinking1 :moped: Can we say "drinking & driving"?

Now I'm not for smoking...but I agree, it's ridiculous that something is ok to stay but something else has to go just because a member said so. What kind of logic is that?

Thanks so much to both Kim and highwaygal. Now, I'm going to back away from this thread slowly ;)

Wow, that was quite a heated response over a smilie.

I never said things should go or stay because *I* said anything. Just that I agreed with the OP. I never demanded anything or condemned anyone, never told you what was right or wrong. I just tried to explain my opinion. Thanks for the sympathy about my grandfather, though.

I certainly don't agree with alcohol abuse, but I was just explaining how it seems different to me because there are positives to drinking, but none to smoking.

We're all entitled to our own opinions, just like I'm entitled to tell the OP I agreed with her.

About a year or so ago, there was a thread about not liking the banana smilie. Many people hate it, many people like it. That thread didn't become aggressive. It's a shame this one did.

I AM SORRY TO SAY sajetto nothing against you--- BUT THAT PHRASE OFFENDS ME (and maybe some others). :wizard:

how would AngienLuLu like it if i started a petition to get that kind of stuff off the boards!

i would never do that because i understand people have the right to do and say what they will--

DOES ANYBODY GET WHAT I AM SAYING??! :faint: you take one thing away- then what is next!?

i have to walk away for a while- my heart is pounding! :badpc:

I agree...While this may be a serious "issue" for the OP (which I don't see it either way and am not big on being PC) I seriously feel that if people don't like it, then don't reply. How hard is it to go BACK into the main forum and find another thread they enjoy?

Some people just like drama....I came to see different opinions and most are being very nice about it, but others with "Don't tell me what to do" is just bringing on the drama in the thread.

All I can say is.. WOW. It's a smiley for crying out loud. Stop taking things soo seriously. If you are so worried about your child smoking from looking at an emoticon, then maybe you should get off the dis for a little bit and have a talk with your kid. Oh the drama one person's opinion can cause...

oh, and mking, that absolutely cracked me up :rotfl2:

You may not have said it, but you certainly implied it. You clearly don't like the emoticon by agreeing with the OP and gave your reasons why, but also said you don't mind the drinking one. You agreed with the OP, the OP wants it removed, so by agreeing with her, you agree that you want it removed. By that alone, you make the implication that one thing is ok to stay but the other is not. That said, it's not the guy's responsibility to express sympathy for your grandfather. My grandfather died from cancer a couple of years ago, but I don't come on here expecting everyone to be won over to my side with people making heartfelt and sympathetic replies just because of that. The thread is not about your grandfather...it's about the smiley.

I certainly don't agree with alcohol abuse, but I was just explaining how it seems different to me because there are positives to drinking, but none to smoking.
There are debated positives to *some* alcohol use. Even so, others would also debate the positive to smoking as well (I'm not one of them, but there's always two sides to every story).

It became this way because someone is implying that all kids of the world will suddenly turn to smoking because of a tiny animated image. Not only is that claim just ridiculous, but it also undermines the teaching authority of the parent. What do you think will have more influence: their parents? Or an emoticon that most people don't even notice?

The smilie in question ( :smokin: ) makes me think of smokin' hot, rather than smoking pot. As an example:
Johnny Depp is :smokin: .

Did you know he smokes? :lmao: Sorry, I couldn't resist. Now really, back to Johnny Depp.... :lmao:

Hi!

First I want to say that I agree with you- it is ridiculous to think that all the kids of the world will turn to smoking because of a smilie. No one said that. Of course parents are a much bigger influence. I don't think the smilie is influential, I just said that I don't like it and that it doesn't really express an emotion.

I don't think the icon should be removed because I don't like it, or because it will influence kids, but because I don't think it expresses any emotion. (Like bouncies express excitement, thumbs up expresses agreement, group hug expresses support, pot stirring represents pot stirring, (lol) etc. KWIM?

No one owes me any sympathy, yes, but I mentioned that because I think some people may have missed my point in bringing up what I did- I was trying to show why I might feel so strongly, why I thought drinking and smoking were different, and why I didn't think a dramatic defense was necessary. I am sorry about your grandfather, as well as anyone else who suffered like that.

Separate subject- what positives are there to smoking tobacco? (I know of some positives to medical marijuana, and I agree with that, but I've never heard any positives of tobacco. Thanks!)

If anything needs to go, it's this guy. :dancer:

He freaks the beejeepers out of me.
