I completely understand the pressure to use your DVC points after missing more than a year and continuing to pay dues. I'm assuming that DVC is the big push to go to WDW in the face of climbing delta numbers. I thank my lucky stars I never had any interest in buying DVC, or any other US time share, and so don't have that financial stake in getting to Orlando. But if you have to seriously plan out a covid infection escape strategy to get back to Canada, isn't that a big red flag that your trip is more trouble than its worth? Perhaps if you are just 2 fully vaccinated adults with no family at home and minimal community contact when you return, then you can accept the risk. But if I was toting along unvaccinated kids hoping to go back to school in September, or had parents and grandparents depending on me to help them out this fall or at least show up for visits, this trip would be a heck no. I wish anyone who takes this trip a great deal of luck and really hope for the best but man it sounds high stress just trying to plan it. Having a mini stroke or chest pains in Orlando during their 4rth wave would be horrifying.

For the Canadian DVC owners, I believe I heard that DVC is allowing expiring points to be extended. All you need to do is call MS (and wait approximately 15hrs on hold).

I think the only acceptable plan if you test positive is to quarantine in Orlando. Unless you can somehow manage to drive back to Canada without being around other people, which I find highly unlikely. We have an adults only trip planning at the beginning of November for a runDisney race, which we would loose our registration $$ if we cancelled. At this point, we're hoping that things are under control by then, but we'll seriously have to reconsider if they're not. I honestly just can't even believe this is something we're still having to think about a year and a half since this whole thing started.

We leave in less than a week. I'm not sure we have much choice in that worst-case scenario. I guess the two options are 1) finding a reasonable hotel to wait it out (and test every few days) or else 2) try to find a rental car that we can drive home (if that works for you) and then drop at the border. It would be one of those two options: wait it out or try to drive home and walk across the border. Also, I'll retest immediately if I can find somewhere to do it fast (in case it was a false positive).

After contracting covid....you will test positive for covid for UP TO 90 DAYS after. So regardless of a positive result....even if you have quarantined for 10 days and are not longer considered and "active case) you will still test positive.

Does anyone know what the rules are from the airline standpoint and boarder security? Or on the government website? Once you test positive...what are the options....is the only option left to drive?

Looks like they will accept proof of a positive test as long as it is between 14 - 90 days old. So after you isolate for 14 days you can fly even if you are still testing positive. This was from the travel.gc.ca website.

Yup. I'm flying next week, my plan is simply to get a hotel and isolate in this case as it is covered by WestJet insurance up to 14 days. Even if we have to pay up front, it's re-assuring. But also, given the testing timelines - being double vaxxed and planning to be masked up the whole trip, the risk is not bad even with Delta.

Thank you!!!! This is encouraging!!!! As someone who lives in the north...it would be nearly impossible to rent a car to drive over...then still need to fly home.

Ya ellbell, if I was to redo it all I would just fly back to buffalo, get tested, taxi to the border and wait for results there and walk across.

But we would still have unvaxxed (too young) kids waiting for us at home and a school year starting soon so pretty crrtain we are cancelling. Even if we test negative and fly back we would feel the need to test again; putting too many people at risk .

If there was a raging party with 40000 people down the street where I knew half the people weren't vaxed or social distancing and was in the north american epicentre of the delta variant would I go hang there for a week?

I 100% agree. I won't be taking my unvaxxed 10 year old anywhere anytime soon. The kids I'm taking both graduated and turned 18 this year and are fully vaccinated. We are also taking all precautions necessary as far as masks, avoiding crowds (within reason) and carrying hand sanitizer everywhere. Since we are all vaccinated I feel pretty confident that we will be able to avoid getting the virus but would not chance the little guy in the current environment.

I like this idea! So you don't need a covid test to fly domestically in the States? I have a work trip planned for October to Las Vegas. I'm thinking if the border is open by then, I will drive over, fly out of Buffalo, fly back and then test in Buffalo, so I can drive home and quarantine at home. I can get from Buffalo to home in one shot so the only person I would encounter would be the border officer.

I think I’ll be cancelling my planned trip in September. I was hoping to surprise DH with the trip as we postponed our “dream trip” to next year. It was supposed to be for his 50th which is this year. I’m so disappointed but not sure it makes sense for us to go. I don’t want to go while I have to wear a mask and I’m not comfortable being around that many people without a mask. We also have a trip planned to see family which would be a problem if we tested positive and couldn’t return. We are both fully vaxxed and have no kids to worry about but I’m just truly unsure on what to do. Doesn’t help that I can’t talk to DH about it! I suppose I could let him in on the secret but one of the reasons to keep it a secret was so he wouldn’t be disappointed again about his birthday plans going awry.

My original plan was just to hunker down in a hotel. Driving isn’t all that realistic (opposite coast) and I think just staying put would be the right move for is.

Also, to clarify, if you have COVID and are a Canadian citizen you can still drive home into Canada? This is if we go the fly to Buffalo and then test there route. I'm having trouble finding anything about it online.

You cannot be denied entry to Canada as a canadian citizen.

Our backup plan is to stay put for 2 weeks. We have reduced the length of our stay to 6 days so that it would be a "miracle" to test positive on Day 3 (incubation for Delta is closer to 4). We are fully vaccinated, will be wearing quality masks and take it easy on Day 1.
