My DH and I were just looking at the backpack we just bought for our upcoming trip and we both wondered if the straps would irritate our necks, etc. Then we both came up with (at the same moment! 
) an idea. You know those soft "bumpers" with Velco that you attach to the straps on a carseat so the straps do not irritate the baby's/child's neck?
We are getting those for the backpack straps-in a Disney theme, of course! Just wanted to share with you all.
