Just back from a 6 day Vero trip. This was my family’s 4th visit. We absolutely love this resort. We enjoyed our recent visit with the exception of ONE incident. The positives of our stay: OVIR, much needed rest and relaxation, seeing a mama turtle on the beach, Mo-Bay Grill, smores, and yoga.

Now the negative (no flames please), the incident that put a damper on our trip……… my ds met up with a friend he met on our last Vero trip. It was a coincidence we were there at the same time. They played ping pong, miniature golf, fished at the pond, enjoyed the arcade, and just hung out like most teenagers do. At one point, the two were rolling a soccer ball back and forth in the lobby, they were asked to stop and they did. Later that evening, they were rolling the ball on the third floor, near my room. (I realize they were already asked to stop in the lobby.) I was in my room and when I came out the boys were along the railing talking about some kids jumping up and down in the elevator thus, making the elevator move when it shouldn’t have been. I sat in one of the hallway chairs to read my book. Shortly thereafter, the bell from inside the elevator was ringing. A family was stuck in the elevator. Security and the manager helped the trapped family out through the garage. The family got out safely. Ds and his friend decided they wanted to walk around the resort. Ds left his ball next to me and left. I began to read my book, when I was suddenly approached by a security officer. In a harsh tone he asked “Who’s ball is this?” I looked up and he asked again. I said “it belongs to my son.” He said “it has been brought to my attention that someone was playing soccer on the third floor, WE ARE ON THE THIRD FLOOR!” I was shocked at the way he was speaking to me. I felt belittled. I said that the boys were rolling the ball back and forth earlier. He then asked for my name and I gave it to him. He then said “PLEASE DESIST FROM ALLOWING ANYONE TO PLAY WITH THIS BALL INSIDE.” I said I’d put it in my room. He then said “AGAIN, DO NOT LET ANYONE PLAY WITH THIS BALL IN THE HALLWAY.” I again said I would put it in my room. He then walked away. I sat there a few minutes to comprehend what had just happened. I was just scolded like a child, I couldn’t believe it. I went back to my room, with the ball, and told DH what happened. He saw how upset I was and went down to speak with a manager. He was told there wasn’t one on duty, but she would be here at 7am. She must have just left.

The next morning, he went to speak with the manager. She apologized and stated that security comes from a temp agency. They are not Disney employees, but she would speak with his manager about this incident. She said that with all the chaos with the elevator, tensions were high. Regardless, I am a guest and should not have been spoken to in such a disrespectful manner. I understand that my son should not have been playing with the ball inside; I handled that after it was rudely brought to my attention. Was it in any way okay to speak to me with a lack of respect? I appreciate the manager apologizing; I just hope the security guard is trained on proper interactions with guests.

Will my family return to Vero? Yes, we won’t let one incident affect one of our favorite vacation spots. :)

I am sorry that you were spoken to that way! When you are, it makes you never want to scold a child again! After reading your post, I walked away relieved that the security guard was not an official Disney employee but from a temp agency. It's good you complained, and hopefully they will speak to the security guard. Hey, it's just a ball!

It's hard to distinguish what his "tone" was , etc. from your description. Just going by his words, however, I really didn't think it was disrespectful. I thought it was firm and perhaps a little harsher than was necessary, but it sounds like he really felt the need to get his point across. :confused3 JMO, of course.

Got the flame suit on, so since you brought it up, sorry I agree with the security guard. Why on earth would they play soccor in the hall way? I have been to Vero several times. It's bad enough that the kids yell and roll and run up and down the hallways and especially the stairways. Now soccor? You can bet I'd be one of the ones complaining about that. Sorry, this falls on you the parent.

From what you posted I think the security guard was firm but not disrespectful. After all, he did say PLEASE. I am sure some guests on the 3rd floor complained to the front desk and that's why they sent the guard to investigate. If your Ds wasn't bothering anyone, no one wouldn't have call the front desk to complain.

Have to agree, there are plenty of places outside for soccer. I hope they found the ones responsible for the elevator. Good grief can you imagine what they did to the beds. :scared1:

Why are the kids playing soccer indoors anyway- again- after they were told not to play indoors the first time? It seems like the security guard was just doing his job.

Oh well, I'm glad it didn't ruin your vaca. We will be in Vero in about 10 days for 6 nights ourselves. Looking forward to a relaxing time in the sun.

I agree, the kids should not have been playing with the ball indoors and I accept responsibility. I took care of it, once I was aware of it.

I'm a high school teacher and can relate to tension involving teenagers, but it's still not an excuse for the guard to take his frustrations out on another adult, me.

I guess it's hard to describe the tone of the guard, he talked down to me, belittled me. A visualization may clear things up
:mad::mad::mad::headache::headache::headache::mad::mad::mad::headache::headache::headache::mad::mad::mad:

As far as the elevator teens, they confessed and apologized to the guards and manager. I'm not sure what happened beyond that.

Regardless of this experience, we will go back and we WILL NOT be bringing a soccerball next year. ;)

I have a pretty good idea whom you are talking about and he definitely needs better people skills.

I agree that they should not have been playing with the soccer ball inside. That seems like common sense. Perhaps if you told them not to, the security guard wouldn't have had to.

I can fully understand and "hear" the tone the gaurd was using with you! hopefully by your next visit they will have trainned him with better people skills!!!
We had a problem about 3 years ago at disneys boardwalk villas with the vallet service. When we talked to a manager we where given the same excuse that they out sourced and that they were not disney assoicate. The gentleman was very very rude he pretty much threated to have my car towed. When I spoke with the manager I could tell she could have cared less what my concerns were with the poor customers service we experenced.
I understand we have children, but in no way should we be spoken to like we're a child. If it was not for us members and customers he would not have a JOB. If this rent a cop can not learn how to treat a customer he should be terminated. I would call disney dvc main customer service line and let them know what happened, give them his name to them if you have it, and the managers name.

I'm thinking that it should go without saying that someone should not be playing soccer in the hallway. (or rolling the ball back and forth). you never know who might be napping in the rooms nearby. the "rent a cop" was just doing his job. a family was stuck in an elevator, due to teen shenanigans.someone probably complained about your boys playing soccer in the hallway. since you had the ball next to you, he thought you were condoning the behavior. I don't know why anyone would think it would be ok to dribble a soccer ball back and forth in the interior hallway. there is plenty space outside for sports.
I guess by saying, "the boys were rolling the ball back and forth"; it sounded as if you were condoning it. and he assumed you would continue to allow it. maybe you should have said, "as soon as I discovered my son doing it, I took the ball away; it won't happen again."
anyway, i'm sure he has been "spoken to" about the way to speak to a guest, and I'm sure you won't allow your teen to play ball inside the hallway again.

I have to say I can completely understand the EXACT tone of the employee to the OP. When we were at Vero the pool was closed because of a storm. My husband decided to go work out. To get to the work-out area he had to walk around the pool area. He was dressed in work-out clothes and shoes, not swimsuit. As he was walking a female cast member shouted at him: "GET OUT OF THE POOL AREA!" At first he didn't realize she was yelling at him, then she repeated the demand adding "I SAID..." He walked over to her and asked "Are you speaking to me? Because I can't believe a guest would be yelled at the way you are yelling at me." She backed way down. He then asked her how she suggested he get to the work-out room. She stuttered a bit and then said that he could continue to the work-out room.

Did it ruin our stay, no, but it was a very unpleasant situation. Having read this post, I am inclined to believe that all staff need retraining...starting with the general manager of the resort. We actually loved the resort and plan to buy a resale there so we can book a beach cottage at 11 months. However, if I ever find myself in a similar situation I will go directly to the manager on site and report the incident and demand that the issue be address then and there beginning with an apology. Even if a guest is doing something wrong that is no excuse to treat them in such a rude and demeaning way.

I agree with TimeforMe :thumbsup2

Sorry....I agree also. I can't imagine that kids were playing ball in the lobby or on the 3rd floor. They should of taken the ball down to the beach to play. Again, just my opinion.

Unfortunately, one of the managers has the same attitude as you described above.

During our June visit, the pool was still closed well after a storm had passed. In fact, the skies were so clear you could see stars. When we asked if the pool was going to reopen for the night, he huffed and in a very rude, condescending tone told us that he would open it, but he'd only "let us swim for an hour." It seemed as if it was a major inconvenience for him to have to reopen the area, but there was over an hour left until the scheduled pool closing time.

It just seems as if the attitude of the resort employees has taken a turn for the worse. Maybe it will turn around soon.

Ddiva,
Enough of this negative talk about my slice of paradise..... Did you do the dive in movie night at the pool? If so how were the lights compared to the other years. I know they are VERY bright now..... did it ruin it?

Mo-Bay Grill you say...... where is that ?

Gee, I sure agree...how about some good chatter about all of our slices of paradise!

If I ever see anyone playing soccer in the lobby or in the hall I'm going to get my vuvuzela out!!
