After reading all of these negative things that schools are doing and saying to parents about taking their children out of school for trips (ludicrius)
I had to share my recent expierience.

I sent the letters last week to my DD's school, to all teachers, homeroom and principle.
2 days later, my 6th grade DD came home from school with a bag and a note from her teacher.
Note said,
"Kristyn,
While you are on vacation, your assignment is this...
In this bag, you will find a disposeable camera to take pictures. Your assignment is to take pictures of anything related to science. And as you know, anything can be science, because science is everything.
Also in this bag is a $7.00 gift card to Eckerds (local pharmacy) to develop these pictures.
Once the pictures are devolped, please put them into the album that is included in the bag to share with all of your classmates.
Have a wonderful vacation.
Mrs. Carr"
Isnt that great! I just about fell out of my chair when I read that.
I was expecting negativity from everyone.
The pricipal even called me at work and told me to have fun, and just get assignments from individual teachers.
I just thought I would share.
I hope everyone gets a response like this at some time or another. :flower:

Love it!!! I can't wait til my next student goes on a trip so I can do the same thing or something similar!! (And it seems like kids at my school go to DW all the time)!

How wonderful! Hope your DD gets some great pics. :goodvibes

How great for you and your children to be at such a wonderful school! :sunny: Mrs. Carr sounds like my kind of teacher. :cheer2: Have a magical vacation! :wizard:

I personaly never have been given grief by any staff member of my daughter's or son's schools. The principal smiled and wished my kids a fond trip and told us to speak with each of their teachers so they can get their assignments. The teachers were very cool about it and routinely told us how much they LOVE Disney and asked if they could come. Now about that teacher, that is one terrific lady and deserves a great gift from WDW.
Cheers

Wow, that is so great! From what I can tell, teachers/schools in the Northern states have been a bit more understanding about Disney trips. Maybe because they understand the distance people have to travel, or their need to escape the snow. Maybe it's not the rule, but seems to be my experience. By the way, disneydreamerinny, where are you located. I grew up in Upstate NY :cold: , and went to college in Potsdam :cold: , NY! Met my husband in the nearby engineering college :love2: .

Wow, thanks for all the responses! The gift from Disney is perfect! I never thought of it.
Allabtprincesses...
We are from Malone!
We go to Potsdam for basketball tournaments all winter long.
My husband went to college in Canton.
Small world... :)

Awesome. I love teachers like that who realize life experiences are every bit as valuable (and sometimes moreso) as book learning.

My DD's teacher came to our yardsale in the summer so my husband told him about the trip and asked him if he would be sending assignments with her. (not htat she would find time to do them with my commando schedule!!) His reply was " Give her the most magical trip". He said he can't imagine making a child do homework on such a wonderful vacation!!! She is a great student but the way their math lessons move I know she will be behind but she will just work harder when she gets back!!!!! The world is full of great teachers, thank goodness we got one!!!

Wow! That is so cool. I hope she gets a lot of good pictures, and I am sure you guys will have fun!

Wow! Ms. Carr is awesome!
And I thought my son's teacher was great. She sent him a certificate saying that he had no homework to make up because he would learn so much on our trip. :flower:

Ms Carr is a wonderful teacher. I only wish my DS was in her class. We are going on the Disney Cruise for my DD MAW trip and my DS teachers informded me " He will really have a lot of work to do" (esp his math teacher) He is in 5th grade and really worried about how much work he will have. I asked if she could give it to me the week before we go so he could have it done before we leave. She said" maybe."

I think there are a lot of teachers/principals out there who believe family time and trips are a valuable part of a well-rounded education. We're taking our two DDs, one in K one in 3rd, to Disney for the first time in just a few weeks. Our school has a written policy that one family trip per year may be excused with prior approval. When I emailed the principal last week with the plans for our trip and how I was using the resources I'd found here to create a great learning experience, especially for the 3rd grader, she responded that it sounded like a wonderful trip and to make sure they had a magical time! So we'll do the states we're driving through, the languages and cultures at Epcot, the animals at AL, etc., all with pictures and journal entries, the map reading and budgeting their own money........But mostly we'll focus on the experience and the Christmas spirit. And we'll make sure to be grateful for our exceptional school with the supportive administration and teachers (and we'll show it with goodies from our trip)!

What a great teacher! I've never had a elementary teacher or principal get nasty for my pulling the kids out of school. The only ones I've ever seen get an attitude are the ones on web boards that think it is horrible to take the kids out of school for a trip.
