Avid Readers: Do you read Prologues and Epilogues??

I do read them, but don't understand why they're there. If you need some exposition, just make it Chapter 1. If you need some wrap-up, make it the last chapter.
ITA! And, I do read them as they're part of the story.

Another alternative is to make the Prologue Part 1, then the main story Part 2 and the Epilogue Part 3.

I confess the epilogues are the only part of book I read :rotfl:

I'm really surprised that so many don't read them. For me, they add to my enjoyment of the book.

I'm a big reader--usually 3 books a week or so. I DO usually skip the preface--particularly if it's by someone besides the author and offers their take on the story. They usually discuss major plot turns in the story and I don't want to know ahead of time--I want to decide for myself. I just read Henry James's "The Turn of the Screw" and had to stop myself from reading the preface or it would have ruined it for me.

Congrats to the OP on writing a book--that's a great accomplishment. I'll read it--prologue, epilogue and all!

Always. I'm also surprised so many don't. Where else are you going to get the background of the characters and the story if you don't read the prologue?

If it's a word, I read it. I am astonished so many others don't.

Although, like someone else said, I read the title page, the dedications, the year it was published, etc...:teeth:

::yes::
Don't understand why you wouldn't bother to read both-- it's part of the story ~

The only reason I'll skip a prologue is if it's a recap of the previous book(s) that I've already read. Otherwise, I read everything.

I'm also surprised people don't read them. IMO, they're part of the story.

Aw, just wanted to thank you for that! If it gets published, I'll send you a free autographed copy. LOL.

The idea of not reading a prologue or epilogue is just as silly to me as the idea of someone not reading the first or last chapters.

I didn't realize that anyone just skipped either!

(Now, there is a difference, I suppose, between a prologue and a forward. I don't always read forwards!)

I always read both the prologue and epilogue. I am also the kind of person that loves an epilogue at the end of a movie. Ties up all the loose ends for me.

Always! My favorite author is John Saul and his Prologues are key to the stories, but would not fit in to a chapter. :)

Yes, of course, I read them.

But I don't read the acknowledgments, "I'd like to thank my editor, who is really God in disguise," part unless I really loved the book.

And if I buy a book that has a literary foreward, with quotes from the book and such, I read that last.

I don't read romance novels, though.

I read both the prologues and epilogues. They are part of the story!

I don't always read introductions or forewards though. Especially if they are going to ruin the plot...on the second reading I may read them though (I tend to reread books a lot).

I hope this helps!
