day 8 of 10 and we went to get chairs at 4:45 am only to find the chairs closest to the pool in front of infinity view already taken on all sides. : o

We don't hate the players, only the game and it sound like the game is about to change...

The attendant came through at 8 am and was very thorough. She said she was very strict with the policy about unattended chairs for one hour. I said, great! We started to discuss the situation and here is what she said and/or alluded to:

Obviously the chairs are a problem.
The Fire Marshall has forbade any chair additions, period.
They modeled the resort on others on the island such as Hilton Hawaiian Village (with the lagoon) but didn't really account for the most people Not leaving the resort throughout the day.
In hindsight, things would have been developed differently.
When Four Seasons, Shangri-La, and Atalntis and operational on Ko'olina in a few years time... We'll see.
The real troublemakers aren't the DVC members but the non members who book rooms. They demand the world and are very rude about the rules being enforced as well as very territorial over chairs that they feel they have a "right" to.
She has seen people tell children who sit down on an empty chair to rest, that they are not allowed to sit there. And has been called everything in the book.
When we only took 4 out of a row of 7 poolside chairs, though we are a party of 8, (to not be hogs!) the party of 5 who took the other 3, would not let our nanny sit on one of the chairs they were not sitting in at the time. They said, "that's OUR chair" I wanted to say- it shouldn't have been!!!! In corroboration of the statement of the Chair attendant- they were wearing the non member bracelets as are all of the parties sitting in the chairs around here today that were taken before 4:45 am.

BUT!!!!!!
She said ominously, that there ARE CHANGES COMING SOON and "they are going to make a lot of people unhappy but they are much more fair"...
I asked her what we could expect in December when we return, but she wouldn't say and said to just keep checking the Internet for the new policies.

We can Only speculate... I'm assuming a limit on how many you can reserve. We have seen people counting out 12 chairs twice. She was emphatic that was a big problem. Maybe a time limit? They can't possibly have a shot gun 8am start, or could they?? That could be interesting... Because they could do that since technically you are prohibited from saving seats before then. Maybe the beach towels are different in a more obvious way than the rooms and you can only use those at the pool to save chairs? That would force you to stand in line for your bracelets at 8 and cool the jets for anyone trying to sprint to chairs. People would have to sit in them bodily and that is actually fair. They could remove all personal items left before 8?

I support any and all of the changes though I've happily got up early and have awesome seats, it really isn't fair.

I told her that they should reserve a section (maybe take out some dining tables) that is just for folks checking in that day. Folks can't control all flights into Oahu so they should have something to come to. You see them wandering, travel weary and nowhere to go at all times of the day, kids in tow. Especially, since the rooms are now being turned "starting at 4pm". Maybe we can change to verbiage on checkout to "starting at 11am" haha- fat chance!

I wish I could be here to see people freak out on the morning of the changes. Haha. I also hope they really do make a difference and are well thought out and implemented.

In the end I told the gal, "most people only need the carrot, but for the rest- you gotta have a stick!" And told her that as members, we are all for whatever makes the resort run the best for everyone for many years to come!

Non-member bands? I thought they just checked your room key card and gave you a band for the day. I didn't notice any distinctions being made, and considering there is a hotel side there too I don't think there should or would be. :confused3

When we were there, there were two sets of bands. Both happened to be the same color everyday, but one was sparkly and one was flat. I can't exactly recall if the distinction was that one was a DVC member and one wasn't, or whether the distinction was one had the length of stay access to the snorkeling lagoon and one didn't. We are both DVC members and bought the lagoon access, and every day we got the sparkly bands. Neither band restricted access to the pool that I could tell.

Members have wider, metallic, tape like wristbands that say MEMBER. Other guests have plasticy, transparent, thinner wristbands that have the hotel logo on them only.

If I knew how to post a pic I would. The MEMBER is large, bold and unmissable.

Aulani uses two styles of colored wristbands. The DVC member wristband says "Member" on it, is wider, and usually has a slight iridescent finish . The non-member wristband is more narrow and has a flat finish. The two styles have been in use since at least the Fall of 2014. Here is a photo of the two styles of wristbands.

You can't rely entirely on the wristband to tell whether a guest is a DVC member because some DVC members choose to wear the more narrow non-member wristband. During our last visit to Aulani, a DVC member said his kids preferred the non-member wristbands because they didn't take up as much space on the kids' arms, which is important when wearing 5 or 6 days' worth of bands on their arms. Also, the DVC member wristband has a slightly sharper edge and some people find the non-DVC member band more comfortable.

I'm not one to lay the blame on just non-member guests for some rude behavior. I've seen DVC members throw tantrums that I wouldn't expect from a 3-year-old.

When it comes to rule changes to address pool chair abuse, my fear is that the rules will adversely affect everyone, but that people will figure out ways to circumvent the new rules. If Aulani closed access to the pools until 8:00 AM each morning, it would still create a mad dash for chairs as soon as the ropes are dropped. If guests had to get wristbands before they entered the pool area each morning, people would be lining up an hour or two before the towel hut opens.

On every trip to Aulani we've noticed people claiming chairs well before the pools open. Rarely are those same chairs occupied until after 9:00 AM or so. I have to admit that when the OP stated they were claiming chairs at 4:45 AM, I wondered if they actually sat in those chairs continuously until the pools opened at 8:00 AM. Some guests are early risers and sit around the pools early in the morning, but most guests seem to claim chairs and then go back to there rooms.

Let's see - our last visit was 13 months ago. I don't remember those sparkly one's at all! Guess we didn't count as members. ;) Prior to that we were there in Dec 2011 I believe and it sounds like they didn't have them then. I don't understand why they would do that? Are they giving discounts on things based on the wrist band?

I think if the CMs just enforced the current rules they would do okay. But by adding a restriction of not allowing guests to save seats before 8:00 am and the CMs just went through removed everything off the chairs people would stop the seat saving. Many hours of the day they don't even use the chairs they save. They come and go even to dine at the TS restaurants or in their rooms without giving up the chairs. If you are going to be gone for over an hour why are are you saving a chair?

As mentioned - the observation about the member vs non member behavior did not come from me but from the exasperated cast member who polices the chairs day in and out. Once she pointed it out, I looked around to the bands.

I agree that if be worried about a shot gun start I can't imagine that's what they will do but who knows. To be honest, the way it is now works fine for us. It's no big deal to get up early and get chairs if your from the later time zones. But if I'm still being honest, it's not a good system and its not very nice to those who don't or can't get up before dawn to get an umbrella. Again- I hate the game, not the players!

Yes, we've been getting up earlier and earlier to get our chairs out of necessity. My son has an ear infection and can't go in he water so he stays in the shade. I want to be near the waters edge to watch my daughter. Because we are conscientious people, we never get more chairs than half of our party. and our chairs are NEVER unattended once the pool is open. We eat breakfast at Ama Ama everyday at 7 am to be back at our chairs at 8am, when the pool officially opens.

Again, if I could figure the photos... Around us all of the chairs are vacant piled with guests things. We have one vacant chair because my husband is at the spa, my daughter in the pool, and the nanny in the room. I just offered a man to feed his baby in our vacant chair and told him to stay as long as he'd like. When we are done with the pool in the afternoon, we start giving up chairs as family retires. I feel crappy, with open chairs and people with babies standing in the sun. It's too bad more people don't.

If we had a shot gun start- that would be madness but fair. If we had to sit in the chairs or across them or whatever from 5am on- that would be a pain but would be reasonable. And the sunrise is beautiful. : ) I'm all for whatever fixes they want to make. Even if it's inconvenient. The system now really isn't okay for all the families who are staying here. Maybe lockers? But I think space is the big problem.

The cast member did say she has recommended a toddler area. That would be a good use of reserved space I think we can all agree. (And no, I don't have toddlers. I couldn't have handled this place with them- truth be told!)

It doesn't seem to make a difference and there aren't many discounts to be had other than the shops and they want your card so I have no idea. I'll ask.

And 12 at a time to boot!

This sounds like something a CM might say to a Member which might not be entirely true.
Btw, I wasn't venting. It was unsolicited. I pretty much assumed that it would be members acting entitled but one look at tripadvisor will dispel that idea. I can only imagine the abuse she gets.

The bottom line, without this issue, if you look at reviews, Aulani would be a dream. They have an obligation to make some attempts to change the sentiment.

Yes discounts on stuff like paddleboards etc... Nothing major.

I was just at aulani a couple weeks ago and I just don't understand people's obsession with having chairs that they aren't using for anything. You need one or two to leave your stuff on when you're swimming.

We literally had some lady waiting for us to get up at one point in the morning because she wanted to lay her stuff out to claim a row of chairs and we'd been using one in the middle of the row for our family of 6. I just wish more people could relax a little and just be nice to each other. Instead they act like if they don't claim a chair for all members of their party at midnight they'll never be able to sit again lol.
Maybe the change will be lockers to leave your stuff in and no saving chairs at all.

Sounds like a lot of selfish folks are making a lot of others pay the price for their selfishness. I for one will be on vacation there in Sept. and I wont be up at 8 or any other time to claim a chair or any other thing for that matter:crazy:

The several times we have stayed at Aulani we had no trouble getting chairs. But then we did not really care for those chairs surrounding the main pool. I much prefer either the adult pool area, the grotto pool or the beach area and these areas are not in as high demand. At least not when we have visited in winter.

When we went in October, we went down to the pool when we got around to it and never had a problem finding chairs together. But we weren't picky in where we sat. Some days we got by the main pool, some days by the grotto, and some looking at the beach. I can imagine that spring break and summer would be a lot crazier.

This has become a thing with some people with the saving of pool chairs at resorts all over. Like they want to sit there off and on all day or something. I just really don't get it. If I could afford to go to Hawaii, I sure wouldn't be sitting by the pool all day, I can do that at home. I would be out visiting the cultural center, learning to surf, hiking to waterfalls, exploring the island in a rental car, there's so much to do there. Geez ow people get a life.

This is very true. I know Marriott Vacation Club has at least a few of their big resorts that have the very same issues. I know some of their Hawaiian resorts have this problem. I get when families want to sit together, and I get wanting a location near where you want to be for whatever reason, in some ways I think those of us that have vacationed at Disney for years have been pre-conditioned to that "rope-drop" mentality. I mean, if we can't get a FP for it, whatever will we do??? well, we have to get there super early, and run like crazy and .... and .....

For those that have not yet been to the fabulous Disney Aulani resort, it has about a zillion pool chairs. Seriously, I would LOVE to know the count because they had a huge amount BEFORE all the "enhancements" and now it's unbelievable how many chairs there are. And as i said earlier, the beach always has lots of chairs available. I've never seen it where there wasn't one with an umbrella available.
