August 2016 Car Rental Rate watch

Our trip is Aug 24 to 31. We like a Standard or Full, as we've got a car seat, booster, and stroller to contend with. Generally, we like to book using our USAA rates, as it provides some additional insurance coverage and extra driver, usually.

I've been playing around, and went from 260->212->181 tonight, leaving me at a number I can at least tolerate (barely). In looking back at my previous years rates, I was at 138 for 9 days in 2013....so my new goal is to get below 150, and then closer to 100. We'll see if that happens. Not sure it's realistic this year, but my previous best rates were within two weeks of travel, so :confused3

When we rent from Alamo, we usually get our car at Orlando airport, but before we do disney this time, we are flying into Ft. Lauderdale first, to visit some friends for 3 days, then driving to Orlando to do the parks. I know that sometimes there are vans on the Fullsize isle to pick from. Does anyone happen to know if this is true for at Ft. L airport also?

I have never rented a car for a Florida trip before but this year is Legoland and Universal so we need it. DH requested it for length of stay even though we will have to pay to park at Uni. We need a Full Size from Aug 30-Sept 6. I read alot of this thread and then went rental car hunting. I think since we bridge into Sept alot of the codes here didn't work for me. However I did find some codes for Budget that did work. Right now I have a rate of $209 complete. I'm fine with that. But thanks to the good advice here I will keep on checking!

From what I remember FLL doesn't let you pick your own car. It has been a while though so maybe that info is outdated.

Yeah, rates are still crazy high compared to previous years.

For example, last year for 2 weeks I spent aprox. $450 for a standard SUV from Costco. Right now, Aug 20 - Sept 5 (MCO) using Costco shows $905 standard SUV, $1542(!) for a minivan and even $508 for a fullsize whereas in previous years a fullsize would have been aprox. $250.

I'm hoping prices do eventually drop because honestly, these current prices without resorting to codes from South American travel agencies are absurd IMO.

I just checked my rate for pickup on August 2 for 9 days and I'm holding $304 with National. I just checked it and it went up to $465....wow a $161 increase......wrong direction. Less than 3 weeks to go for us.

Yikes.... Alamo just took a HUGE jump for my dates..August 9-15.. I'm holding a full size for $171. It's been $215 for well over a week, and it hit $321 today

Just reserved a Dollar Rental midsize Aug 23-29 (from Tampa) for $132. I have a BJ's membership, but I saw no benefit to using it as it was cheaper through Dollar directly. I found a code at Retailmenot for 20% off that seemed to work: 100182

It ends up being $223 with all the taxes, but from what I see in this thread, it seemed decent enough to book tonight even if I end up cancelling later.

Check your rentals this morning. Mine was holding steady at $306. Today my 12 day rental is back down to $227 (which I booked at the end of June). Alamo Costco Contract ID 7014627 and $25 off coupon AD3868JST

What are your dates?

I am picking up on 8/18 and they are even higher this morning then they have been. 8/18-8/27 I have booked at $202 for a midsize. It is $393 this morning.

Same here, my prices are either the same for some classes and higher for others than the prices I posted a few posts above.

Looks more and more like I'll have to be rolling the dice with that AS1 code. I know most everyone has had no issues using it but I'd be lieing if I said I didn't mind having to use it. A hundred dollar difference, I'd pay and not use some Brazilian code, but when one is talking a $500 difference and more...

The Alamo price today, for 2 weeks, is $800. >:( That's double what I already have a reservation for! 8-10/8-24. FWIW, I still think it will drop.

Picking up 8/1. Hopefully everyone will see drops as we get closer.

I used AS1 code and the old expired $50 coupon in May and had zero problems. I'd use it again but it raises my rates to $475.

We always fly into FLL first to visit family. I use Costco site and use Alamo. We get either mid or full size. I don't recall vans on the full size aisle. But then again, I don't look for them.
We return car once we check into our Wdw resort, to the CCC. Very handy. It's right by the TTC, and they will shuttle you anywhere on Wdw property.

I don't know what's with rentals now? I'm glad I have a Res with Alamo for $230/10 days. Picking up in Ft Lauderdale and returning to Disneys CCC.
Rates are crazy. Been checking daily and they're $460 :scared: and we leave in 2.5 weeks. Usually they are dropping by now. Last year I paid $180 for full size. I can live with $230, if they don't drop but that will be the highest I've ever paid. Usually it's between $180-$200 for a 10 day one way rental for us with a mid size or full size.

I wonder what's going on? A few years ago for whatever reason there was a rental shortage and lineups at the airport were an hour long. Crazy.
