Still undecided on what we are going to do.
Dollar's customer service department informed me by phone this morning that we can't use the CAA discount for our rental as the CAA coverage is in my name, while DH is going to be the driver of the rental. The two must match (DH doesn't need CAA as he drives a new vehicle that has roadside assistance as part of the warranty).
That leaves us with two choices:
A full size with Dollar using their City Special rate for a total of $167.92 after taxes and fees
A midsize SUV with National using the KLM code + a $30 entertainment book coupon, for a total of $245.52 after taxes and fees
The difference is $77.60.
We would get a free additional driver with National (we are Emerald Club members) and a bigger vehicle that we are more familiar with (our primary vehicle at home is a Dodge Journey). My guys are big fellas (DH is 6'4" and 280 pounds, DS is 6' and 185 pounds) so the extra room in the SUV would be appreciated.
Dollar is cheaper. And mama loves saving money. But Dollar seems to have a more negative reputation (or perhaps I am just getting wigged out by reading about supercharges for missed tolls or scamming folks by adding extra insurances that the customer didn't agree to).
DH is worried that the full size, if we don't get an Impala, wouldn't hold all of our luggage comfortably. Dollar's website lists a full size as a "Nissan Altima or similar". So there's no guarantee on the make of the car and from what I understand, Dollar assigns you a vehicle (you don't get to pick).
Unless I am mistaken, with National, we would have our pick from whatever is available in the midsize SUV section when we arrive.
Dollar has the best price, but it sure seems like National has everything else going for it.
The indecision is driving me nutty!
