August 13, 2011 Med - Mickey's Marauding Mates

I'm here! So how are you all arranging for a taxi pick up when you leave the ship? through your hotel or direct with some company? Those taxi lines look horrendous and to be avoided if possible!

From our hotel (Hotel Arts) to the airport I believe we paid 30 or 35 Euros.
And Mikki - no no no don't take a taxi from the port to anywhere. We waited 90 minutes and it was a flipping mess because we needed a van so then we had to wait another 20 and had to almost fight for a van when another group tried to tell us we hadn't waited in line and tried to steal it from us. It was a very bad end to a great trip and we'd never do it again.

I think since we're both staying at the Novotel before the cruise and are sharing a ride of some sort to the port that Kelly was going to check on the idea of whether or not we could share a ride again leaving the port - even tho we have different destinations afterward. If that plan doesn't work out with the shuttle service then I suppose we'll be arranging something on our own.

We had SUCH WINDS today! They are settling down a little now but the cats were freaking out earlier. Pacing & worried. I often wonder about their instincts. Our cat, Buzz, was climbing on top of everything he could to see out the windows. He perched on top of the refrigerator for awhile. Silly cat. :cat: Our other cat, Cricket, was much calmer & just watched from the back door...she just looked at him like "what's HIS problem". It was kind of comical.

We got a new TV this week...don't think I mentioned the whole TV debacle. We have a 60" Sony that we've had for about 5 years now I guess. A few weeks ago we noticed the entire screen was turning green! We tried adjusting & nothing seemed to remove the tint. DH went online & started researching and lo & behold thanks to the internet and Facebook we discovered that this is a known defect in some of these Sony models!! AND there is a class action lawsuit pending against Sony over it!! SOOO thru this "I have a defective Sony TV" Facebook page we were able to contact Sony & negotiate for a replacement set (after sending in pictures of the green screen & the S/N tag)!! NOT entirely FREE but for about 1/4 of the normal cost (which was a lot considering that we were not planning any other major purchases this year). At first they tried to get us to take either a 46" or a 55" but we said NO we want another 60". They tried to tell us they were out of stock!:rotfl: NOT!!:sad2: The bigger the set of course the bigger out of pocket expense it was for us...but we still didn't want to compromise on what we'd had and what we were used to. They sent us one of their new Bravia NX810's which are "3D ready". (The glasses & converter tube are extra...not sure we're ready to jump right in & buy all that stuff just yet.) Also NOT SURE what we're going to do with the old TV either. Now we need to research getting it repaired...but I think the repairs don't last on them - which is why Sony didn't even OFFER to repair it...only to replace. They just didn't want anyone else joining in that lawsuit. SOO this is our big project now for tomorrow. Getting the old TV moved (somewhere) and the new TV hooked up.:happytv: I am glad that DH is technically savvy 'cuz I certainly AM NOT!! :rotfl:

That is a big screen TV! Glad they did the right sort of deal in the end for you.

Realised I didn't give our ages. I hit 50 a few months ago and dh will hit 60 a few months before the cruise.

We did a river cruise last year - going on the Rhine and Danube from Budapest all the way to Amsterdam. One of the really nice things about it was all excursions were included, all wine and beer with evening meals and all tips. Even after shopping we only ended up spending 100 euros over the two weeks. This Disney cruise is going to have a lot more extras!

Hi All, finally got on here eventually thanks to Annie for all her advice and experience. This is our first Disney cruise and we are so excited can't wait for the experience. We live in Birmingham England and Im travelling with my Husband Derek and our 3 year old son Aaron who is Disney mad especially Toystory.

Welcome Joanne! Did you know there was a Disney fan meet happening in Birmingham at the end of April? Being run by the guys who do the DisneyBrit podcast. I'm going and will also be taking (horror!) excess Disney stuff to sell.

:yay: Yay! Ya found us!! Welcome aboard!!! I do hope you come chat often!! :welcome:

We love Toy Story here too & it was one of DS's favs when he was younger!! Our cat, Buzz, is named after Buzz Lightyear!! He had a brother, Woody, but he died almost 2 years ago from kidney failure at only 5 yrs old.:sad1: They were both all black & Woody was THE sweetest cat ever.:cutie: They were litter mates and had never been separated and Buzz was just the SADDEST cat after Woody died. He was SO lonely. Then a couple of months later my parents found this kitten on their basement steps. She looked like she had been drowned in the creek behind their house or something. Mom said she was so muddy & dirty & wet & scraggly they thought at first that she was a RAT!! Then they decided she had cat ears!! They caught her & cleaned her up in a washtub & she turned out to be this purrrrrfect little gray tabby (who LOVES to purrrrr)! They already had 3 inside cats, 1 outside cat & a dog...they reallllly didn't need another cat to feed...so she asked me if we might want her. I wasn't sure if it was too soon after losing Woody...but thought she might keep Buzz company. He was still walking around the house howling for Woody. He was still so sad. SOOO we went to meet her & decided to take her in. We named her Cricket (call her Crickee mostly) after the little cricket in the Mulan movie ("You're one lucky bug")!!:goodvibes We figured crickets are supposed to be lucky and she certainly was lucky to have been rescued.:) So that's how we got to have 2 cats named Buzz & Cricket.:cat::cat:

Yes, 60" is a pretty big TV! :rotfl: We have regular dinky old 26" TV's in our 1st floor family room & in our bedroom. But when we decided to finish our basement a few years ago we decided to wire it for the home theater speakers & we built in one wall of cabinets for an entertainment center & a computer desk for DS. That is where DS & DH play their Wii games & stuff too. DH got it hooked up today....it is actually SOOO much smaller than the old set 'cuz it's like a thin panel - the old one still has a lot of body behind it & it had speakers running down the side. So even tho the screen is the same size the SET is tiny in comparison. TV's have really become smaller overall in the past 5 years. He had to go out & buy a new cable of some sort for something that hooked up differently to the receiver - he could only find it in 8 ft. long tho so it barely reaches where it needs to go (ie the TV cannot move at all).:rotfl: We also need to figure out someplace to put the center speaker for the home theater speakers. There are 5 speakers for that - 4 are wall mounted but we had the center one sitting on top of the old TV - because it was deep enough for it to sit there. NOW this set is only like an inch or so deep & there's nothing for it to sit on. :sad2: Not sure how we're gonna fix that. May have to install some sort of a shelf or something.:confused3 The other thing is that this TV sits lower - it just has a much lower profile than the old set. We kinda custom built the cabinets for the old one. Mistake I guess. But didn't expect that TV to die in only 5 years!!:rolleyes1 Now we have this big old set sitting in the floor - it's HUGE. I don't know what we're going to do with it. :upsidedow

Sorry I havent' replied to your post Annie. It's been crazy around here. There are 4 of us. My DH Mark, DD Caitlyn (6) and DS Zach (4). We've been to WDW and Disneyland Paris. We are actually from Houston, TX but my DH is temporarly assigned to a job in Moscow. There a list for the FE excahnge yet? I've been reading all about it and it sounds like a lot of fun.

Hi thats a lovely story about your cats, we don't have any pets would love a dog but were out all day at work so would not be fair. Mulan is a great film we still have not been to see tangled.

Oh I am glad you popped back in to say hey!! I've got everyone added to the roll call on the first post. Since you didn't mention having done any DCL's before I assumed this was your first DCL cruise!? Looks like we've got lots of little mates cruising!!

Since we've been a small group to date nobody's really talked about doing the FE's but Joanne had mentioned it to me on a Facebook message so I guess it's time to kick it around and see who's interested in doing it!! Looks like we're up to 10 cruisers so far. Well, Liza (NJ_Ohana hasn't been around since I don't know when so not sure if she's still part of our group or not.:confused3) Jeremy hasn't been back to say who all he's bringing - he was getting ready to move to Bucharest so I'm sure he's been busy. He was planning to bring his parents too so not sure if they'd be interested as well...hopefully he'll get settled soon and check back in. So I'm gonna go out on a limb & say we have just the right amount of cabins right now if ya'll want to do one. To be honest tho I have been concerned with how much stuff that would add to our packing. I am going to try DESPERATELY to keep us to one 17 inch international size carry-on and one checked bag each. So if we participate I would really like to be able to keep it light and simple. Last time I did it we had 10 cabins participate & I ended up making goody bags for each cabin with about 6 items in each bag. I would not be able to do all that this time. It would simply add too much to carry in our luggage - both coming and going. So I would be game for a couple of small items if we can all agree not to go overboard with tons & tons of stuff!!!!:goodvibes Somebody needs to sort of be in charge of it...we need to keep a list of who's participating & their cabin numbers etc.

SOOO SHOW OF HANDS!! Who all wants to participate in a FE exchange?! Reply with a YES or a NO so we can figure out if we have enough peeps to be worth it!!!

It is our first Disney cruise. I think I'm more excited then the kids. :dance3: I'm happy to be the lead on the FE. Not sure what all I need to do but I can keep a list with room #s. :tigger: I agree that we should keep it to small items.

Before kids my DH and I use to each travel with a 22" suitcase. It's tough but it can be done. Maybe you can pick stuff up from your last stop before the cruise.

Can't wait to meet everyone.

Hi Yes it is our first Disney Cruise we did not know Disney did a cruise till we saw an advertisement in a sunday newspaper. Im getting more and more excited just reading reviews on here.
We will take part in the FishExtenders will need some ideas as to what to bring and what others have done in the past.

Joanne - here is the facebook link for Mousemeets:

I was just reading about Fish extenders the other day as I had never heard of them. The hanging thingies off the fish aren't sold in the UK which is a nuisance. I also agree about the weight issue. I hope a pack of notelets with photos of a small english village would be suitable for the non-uk cruisers - not disney but still cute.

Hi thanks for the link for mousemeets just had a look and looks great we have already made plans for that weekend as its the Bank hol. Have you been before?
Just popped back on here now Aaron in bed and watching Dancing on Ice

Last year was the first one. Been a good decade since any other UK meets so it is interesting to see how they go.

Can you UK peeps buy things on Ebay?? That is one place to get them from....http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=fish+extenders&_sacat=See-All-Categories

I don't sew & am not crafty at all...On my last cruise the girl who organized the FE exchange and another girl made all of our FE's FOR us!! They were awesome! And they did it without SEWING!! I don't know HOW they did it but they were all customized!! They just had 2 pockets which was plenty. You know how I named this thread "Mickey's Marauding Mates"? Well, we were the "DIS-Functional Wonder Peeps" (we were on the Wonder). So they had made a logo thingy with a pic of Castaway Cay in it that we all had in our siggies & she put that on the FE too...I don't know HOW she did it...but so if I could cover that up somehow with something else I COULD re-use it maybe... I don't want to ruin it but if I could just cover up the Castaway Cay pocket with something else on a temporary basis...:confused3
Here's a picture:

And yes, we decorated our door too!

IF I get a new FE this year I'll probably just order it from someone on Ebay...

Little gifts from your hometown are perfect - we gave our stuff anonomously but I think the gifts were all personalized enough that we could figure out that our NY peeps gave out the New York Yankee lanyards and our Boston peeps gave candy made in Boston etc.

I may re-use some of my door signs too...they would need updated as I think I had our cabin number on all of them (so they wouldn't "walk"). That would have to be changed... I am just not feeling very creative at the moment...

I hadn't thought of Ebay! Found one person who says they will post to UK (the one who specifies new on your link). they do look cute. Will have to give this some serious thought!
