Audio announcements in your stateroom

I just read the following tip:

Tape some napkins over the speaker in cabin. They always seem to announce bingo or art auctions way too much for my liking (esp. in the morning!)

We have cruised three times and very rarely have heard an announcemnt from the speaker inside our stateroom. It seems that most of these messages are purposely NOT sent to your stateroom speaker, but can only be heard in hallways and on open decks. Do you think there are two buttons to press when someone makes an announcement, one that includes stateroom speakers and one that does not? Does anyone know if there is a policy that specifies which announcements DO get made in staterooms?

I guess it's possible our stateroom had a defective speaker  that only worked sometimes, but I doubt it. Especially since this behavior seemed consistant on all three cruises. What do you think?

You're right, there do seem to be some announcements that go to every cabin, and some that are only in public areas. However, I think covering the speaker is a bad idea. On our last cruise, the captain made announcements (that we heard in our cabin) pertaining to bad weather and a missed port, and other valuable information that passengers should hear.

I only heard some in the cabin but most of them I had to open the cabin door and stand in the hallway to hear since they were only on those speakers in public areas. The early morning one like that immigration call in St Thomas was in all the cabins but bingo and htings were only in the hallways.

we heard a lot of messages in our stateroom, but the volume was so low that you couldn't understand a thing they were saying unless you were directly underneath the speak, and even then it was hard to hear at times.

We were on the 5/27/06 Double Dip cruise, and most announcements were not broadcast on the speakers in the stateroom, but we could turn the TV to channel 10 to hear the live broadcast announcements.

On our first cruise (10/03), every announcement came thru loud and clear - drove us crazy. During the last cruises, we have missed every single announcement even when we tried hard to hear Capt. Tom.

I don't care about the wind speed and really don't want to know how deep the ocean is beneath me, but I'd like to know the other stuff :teeth:

We were on the May 27th cruise as well and I remember the cruise director saying that when you hear the chime if you turn on your TV to a certain channel you can hear the announcement in your room. I think the only announcements that come into the room automatically are the ones for the safety drill and other major announcements like that. Not the daily ones about weather, shows, etc.

Hi all,

Great topic! I was kinda wondering about this as on our last DCL cruise in Feb. we had to open the stateroom door to hear the announcements. I figured the last few times we cruised DCL they had either changed the announcement in cabin policy or none of ours ever worked properly, because when we first started sailing her you heard everything in the stateroom (we never minded this much).
Thanks to ya'll though I'll be keeping our stateroom door closed and turning on the tv instead this time! LOL!

just returned, and we never heard any announcements in our room. when I heard the chime, I'd run open the cabin door. didn't know about the channel on the tv, but by the time i turned it on and found the channel, it would have been over anyway.

oh thank you. I was beginning to wonder if I imagined the whole thing.

The stateroom annoucements in the room have never been annoying for us until our last cruise on the Wonder. For some reason, it seemed like more of them were done in the stateroom and it drove me nuts! But that is the first time in recent memory that I can recall it being a problem.

The only time I have heard an announcement in the cabin was about 2 AM when there was a fire on board (December 2001). The announcement was calling the CMs on a particular support team and was repeated several times. (Red Team alert, code ___, or something like that.)

Wow, there are speakers in the stateroom? :confused3 That shows how much we had come across ours....

We always had to open the door to hear so no complaints in that department...of course, we'll see what this year brings.....

The only announcements I heard in the stateroom were for the emergency drill and the emergency drill for the crew members.

I did hear announcements in the hallway, that I wish were in the stateroom....so I asked if they could be announced in the stateroom as well. They advised that they like to only announce emergency/need to know things on each stateroom. (they cannot just turn on one stateroom to hear all announcements)

So, I don't think it best to cover the speaker, you may miss something 'important'.

I would stand on the bed to get close to the speaker to hear the announcements...very quiet!

I remember our first cruise or two, '00 & '01, it was a little annoying to be jarred out of bed by an announcement. We like to sleep in a little. It hasn't seemed to be a problem as of late, but then again we haven't cruised since '04.

The only announcements that were made in the rooms on our cruise were the emergency announcements for the safety drill. Everything else was just in the hall.

My hearing is bad enough that I couldn't hear any of the announcements over speakers. It was a bunch of nonsense to me. Always had to ask someone to tell me if it was important. And unfortunately the announcements on the tv were not captioned.

We only heard a few announcements in our stateroom. I had to run out in the hall to hear what added activities the cruise director was announcing (bad wx in Costa Maya).
