I have a 6-month-old daughter who rarely sleeps through the night (maybe 4-5 times in her life). My pediatrician has told me that this is odd behavior for a child her age; "she should be sleeping through the night by now". Anecdotally, I've been talking to a few other parents who have indicated their children didn't sleep through the night consistently until they were as old as twelve months. How old were your kids when they slept through the night? Any advice you can give me?

ETA: I don't want this to turn into a flame war over crying it out vs. attachment parenting. I'm more interested in individual experiences.
Also ETA, for purposes of this poll, sleeping through the night constitutes 6-8 hours unbroken sleep.

Both DSs were about 2 months old when they slept through the night.

I have 3 DDs and they were sleeping through the night at 8 weeks, 4 months, and 3 - 4 months.

my ds was 10 weeks and dd slept through the night since the day she was born. I worked night shift when I was pregnant with her and they say that while your awake the baby is sleeping as if you are moving in a car. I think that may be why she slept through the night since when I was pregnant I was sleeping during the day and awake at night.

My son was 13 weeks old. He went from getting up every 1.5 to 3 hours to sleeping 12 hours a night within a week or two of 13 weeks. I will never forget that first night, I kept going to check on him to make sure he was okay....I barely got any sleep!

All children are different and so there is a broad range of "normal". I have people tell me their kids slept through the night from the get go and there are some who are still not sleeping through the night, it all depends on the child, I think.

DS was like 10-11 months or even older. I just know it was a very long time.

DD was 2 weeks old and scared the crap out of me when I woke up and realized it was morning.

Well, just this year for the 10 year old. Seriously, he's clinically hyperactive and would just stand by my bed 3-4 times a night asking "Can I get up and play?" So, nope, he wasn't sleeping all night by 6 months. This year, he can finally sleep the 6 hour stretch required to be classified sleeping through the night.
My little one only woke once a night from birth, and stopped doing that at about 4-5 months.

I don't remember my DDs exact ages that they consistenly slept through the night, but I do know that my second one did it faster. I think it was because I didn't pop out of bed at every whimper with the second one. I let her have a few minutes to settle herself down before I'd check on her.

Both my girls are good sleepers. They of course have a bad night here and there but for the most part they sleep through (one dd is 6 and the other is 16 months).

The very 1st night my son came home from the hospital he slept straight thru the night. In the morning, I was in a full fledged panic and said, I didn't know I had to set my alarm to get him up to feed him! :rotfl2:

I was such a dumb mom. I had absolutely no experience whatsoever with infants up to that point.

Both of my DD's began sleeping through the night for example 7:00-6:30, when they were both around 10 weeks old.

Oh my goodness, it was around his first birthday when he finally made it all through the night! We look back on it now and think we must have been one step above zombies!!!

Just wanted to add that I have heard that if you co-sleep it will take your child longer to sleep through the night. I co-slept with my younger 2 DDs until they were about 2 - 3 months old; however after that I moved them into the crib in order to encourage them to sleep through. It worked for us.

My daughter just started---and she is 16 months. She kept thinking she needed a bottle. :rolleyes1

I don't think my DD slept through the night until 9-12 months. We co-slept so it really didn't bother me that she woke up in the middle of the night to nurse.

both at just shy of 6 weeks. i clearly remember after the oldest's birth attending the "reunion" of our child birthing class-dd was the youngest and the only one who was sleeping through the night.

but "paybacks are hell"-she had terrible colic a few months later and i would have gladly traded getting up during the night vs. several hours of a terribly upset baby/new mom/new dad every evening.

i don't know if it made a difference-but from day one we never tiptoed or were hypervigilant about being quiet around them when they slept-so neither were apt to easily stir when sleeping.

Both my dd's slept through the night at 10 weeks of age.

My DS is 13 weeks old now and he still isn't sleeping through the night. I was totally spoiled by the girls and expected he would follow in their footsteps. Not so. :faint: It is a good thing he is so cute! :goodvibes :teeth:

My DS slept through the night (most nights) by 4 months, my DD who is almost 5 months old has NOT slept through the night yet. However, she has gone several 6-7 hours stretches some nights. Some day, soon, we pray she'll go all the way so we can get a good nights sleep again! :wizard:
