Dd was 3 weeks old the first time she slept through the night and I actually panicked thinking something must be wrong, lol! I woke her up an hour before we had to get up just to make sure she was still breathing! It was a first time mom thing. I won't be that stupid with my 2nd! I could have had that extra hour of sleep!

She started "officially" sleeping through the night somewhere between 6-8 weeks (I can't remember exactly!). The only times she hasn't slept through the night was when she learned a new milestone. For example, she woke up in the middle of the night at 7.5 months and that is when she decided to crawl! She still sleeps through the night but lately it takes longer for her to fall asleep because she recently learned how to stand up and everytime we lay her down she stands right back up in her crib! Ugh! So basically, my baby that went to bed by 7 p.m. up until 8.5 months has recently started going to bed around 10 p.m. b/c of the new milestone of standing! But, hey, at least she is still sleeping through the night!

poohtown~ You are lucky! My dd was 9 lbs 7 oz at birth and she still wanted the "nightly snack" until she was at least 6 weeks old, lol!

OP~ Just because your child is not sleeping through the night by 6 months does not mean there is something wrong! Some babies take longer than others. They are all different and do things at their own pace. Good luck!

I can count the number of times our DS-7 years old has slept through the night on 1 hand. Luckily I work at 3:00 AM so it is not a big deal.

DD slept through the night at 6 weeks after that she would sleep from 10:00pm until 8:00 am sometimes as late as 9:30.

Before that DD only woke up one time a night around 3:00 am.

My four first slept through regularly at the following ages: 5 years, 3 years, 2 years, 2 years. As you can see, they were not good sleepers. Fortunately I am and could manage quite well with two small ones in the bed kicking me all night.

Sorry to say, my daughter is almost 18 months old, and maybe sleeps through the night 3 out of 7 days. Shes been like this all her life. The other kids slept through early on.
My youngest one,w ell she has her own agenda I suppose :confused3
I dont do the cry it out thing, which alot of parents swear by. I hate it, to me, its just a power thing, to see who can be more miserable the baby or the parents.
WHen my youngest has a cold, she gets up even more :(
Last night she went to be around 9, was up at 3am and up again at 5am. Shes still asleep now because we gave her some cold med at 3am it usually makes her tired, but not that tired.

I always said, if there is something my kids do right, it is sleeping! My DD started sleeping through at 6 weeks. My DS started at 5 months, but that seemed like forever for us. He had health issues though so we had to be patient. I think it is genetic though. DH needs lots of sleep. And all of their cousins on his side, except one, are the same way and slept through early.

DS #1 and DS #2 started sleeping thru between 6-8 weeks.

DS # 3 got up at 5:00 am every night until he was 15 mo.

DS has only done it once or twice - last night was one of them. He's 14 months old. Although he DOES sleep 9 hours straight usually. So technically I guess thats sleeping thru the night. But to me sleeping thru the night is not getting up from bedtime (7 p.m.) to wake time (5:30). He was waking 3 or more times a night. So at 9 months we did Cry it Out at bedtime. After a few nights of minimal crying (15 minutes max) he now goes right to sleep.

I have two DS's - the first one slept through at 3 months, the second at 8 or 9 months (it seemed like an eternity). The second has never needed as much sleep as the first.

my 5 year old dd didn't sleep thru the night until she was 4. She sleeps thru most but not all nights now. My 20 month old has yet to remotely come close. They were 4 and 5 pound range at birth. I think it is genetics since my brother didnt' sleep thru the night until age 5.

my eldest was only bf and slept thru the night by 10 weeks (we were told that wouldn't happen...ha! and no, at that age there was absolutely not CIO).

my twins were different. they were both bf and supplemented with formula. they were also 5w1d premature, although they never needed NICU and were pretty healthy overall. Andrew had some weight gain issues at first but was able to eventually overcome them. He slept thru the night right around 6 months.

Katie was different. she was the smaller twin (only 4lb10oz when born) and honestly I think she got into the habit of having her middle of the night bottle. Around 9 months or so she slept thru the night a handful of times, but then started teething like crazy and started getting up again. She didn't really sleep thru the night consistently until she was 12 months old. It was really hard at the time but thankfully it does pass.

My definition of sleeping through the night is 12 hours! My babies were breastfed and ds1 slept through from 6 months on; ds2 slept through at 16 months. Prior to that, at around 5 months both slept from 6-7 hours. It is normal for all babies (especially breastfed ones) to wake once or twice a night to eat until after 12 months of age. After that they wake due to teething, fears, developmental milestones etc. So there are no guarantees. To get the best sleep. routines are good, as well as plenty of time for naps and a set bedtime. Again, it is normal for a baby to wake at night. It is the way they are designed, they do not sleep like adults.

My first 2 sons were 3 YEARS old and the last one was about 18 months. Guess I haven't been that lucky :confused3

DS started to sleep through the night at 15-months. 7pm-6am. DS had us trained well. :rolleyes1

1st dd didn't sleep thru the night once until she was 6 months old, cio at 9 months, still didn't sleep through consistently. Never let her sleep in our bed until she was 2 when 2nd dd was born and nobody slept! She has fought sleep since birth and is now 13 and still hates to sleep. When she was too old to sleep in our bed, she would come in and sleep on our floor.

2nd dd..um pretty much never as a baby, let her come to our bed every night until she was five. Sleeps well now. As a baby, she slept better in her car seat. I would sleep on a mattress right next to her...she'd sleep for 5 hours 8-3, but her sister didn't sleep til 10, so I'd never get to join her at 8. Then she woke every half-hour to hour til morning. Her dr said his son slept in an umbrella stroller, so the car seat was fine.

3dd..bless her...loves to sleep, she was bf, so still took about a year for consistent sleep, but she'd usually just wake once, eat, go back to sleep, and then slept a total of 11-12 hrs.

Good Luck...I remember the exhaustion!

2nd DD is 10 and STILL DOESN"T SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT! She's up several times for various reasons and she's up for good pretty early. :confused3

DD#1 slept through the night her first night home :goodvibes I only had to get up with her two times ever! The first time was when she was about 3 weeks old and we went to visit Grandma, so I think her schedule was messed up. The second time was a few years later, she was sleeping with a stuffed animal and rolled on top of it... it started playing a very loud tune over and over, I finally went in to see why she was playing with it in the middle of the night and she was sound asleep.

DD#2 was a little different. She spent 3 weeks in the ICN, so her schedule was set by nurses on a 24/7 basis, not us. Plus she was on an apnea moniter and needed medicine every night at 2 am until she was 5 months old. So she was quite a bit older when she first slept through the night.

Russ was sleeping 6-8 hour stretches by 4 weeks old and 10-12 hour stretches by 7 weeks old.

And then came teething at 8 months - we haven't slept through the night since then.

Kurt jr didn't wake up until 9:45 this morning! :faint: Of course he would choose a day that I can sleep in to do that, but hey it was great!
