At my daughter's prom...

 I must be the only old person here... all I could think of was the 90210 show where Donna got busted drinking before the prom and they all protested so she could graduate with the class.

What I want to know is how many have to die before these kids realized how stupid they are?? They don't think it will happen to them and that is just so sad!!!

At my sisters school in the country, after the prom they immediately go to an all-night party hosted by the Student Council President's parents (both events in the same building I think.) If anyone wants to leave the party they can, but the school calls the parents first to let them know they are leaving and they can't come back in once they've left.

They do this at my school too! The seniors pick a 'post prom theme' each year, and the gym is decorated all cute and it goes until about 3am or so. Sometimes it's a hit, sometimes not. Last year it was "Pirates" and everyone just put on eyepatches and hats.. this year it's "The Roaring 20s" and not many kids are excited about it.

OP, I agree about the afterparty drinking, esp if the kids know there will be a breathalyzer, they will probably just wait.

I don't recall anyone drinking at/before our senior prom (I was a drinker and I didn't even drink there!) it was the after parties that had all the drinks. I remember kids rented houses out in the hamptons and the day of the prom they would drive there in 2 cars, one loaded with beer/alcohol, leave that car out there and then both go home in the other and after the prom scores of kids went back out there in limos and cars and partied!

Kids think they are invincible and indestructible - they always have and they always will. Therefore we do what we can to protect them. We educate them, offer them rides, preach designated drivers etc. Ultimately there will always be the ones who have the "it won't happen to me attitude" personally those are the ones I try and protect my DS from.

We provided DS with a vehicle so he doesn't get in someone else's. He knows he can call us or any number of our neighbors if he needs a ride (no questions asked/no repercussions) same goes for his friends. I have gone out several times to retrieve kids that needed a ride home and were afraid to call a parent (this is sad, parents, we need to keep our heads about us) more than one has spent the night on my couch.

My son carries my Visa card in the event he ever needs a cab. My DS is only 17, he is not a drinker and avoids the parties where he knows it is going on. He is a High School athlete and the consequences are not worth it to him, YET. I am not stupid, I know what we were doing at that age and I feel the best thing I can do is provide him and his friends with a way to be safe and to do everything in my power to make sure they wake up the next morning.

They checked our cars when we went to prom and if you were suspicious they asked you to get out. We didn't have any after parties for Prom at our school but we did for Graduation.

When my son was a senior, every attendee had to go through sort of a receiving line of faculty and police (off duty and hired by the school). A letter had been mailed to the parents and given to the students the week before the dance. If a student was obviously intoxicated, the police checked the limos they were using and fined each limo about $1000 for transporting minors and alcohol:thumbsup2
Parents were called to pick up their kids. As one of my son's friends said, "This looks like a middle school dance with all these parents here to pick up their kids!":lmao:

When my daughter had her prom last year, there was an after party sponsored by the parents at a facility with the same rules as those described in a earlier post. None of the drinkers came to it, which made for a fun night for the rest of the kids. My daughter won a door prize - a $50 gift certificate for a friend and her at a fancy spa with lunch at a gourmet restaurant. Sweet girl..........she's taking her momma;)

I teach at a high school. The kids that have been drinking at our dances, are suspended, parents called, and sometimes underage drinking charges are filed. The kids all know the expectations, so they don't have anything to argue about if they are caught.

I remember kids showing up to prom drunk. We didn't have breathalyzers. I specifically remember one girl who I looked up to showing up drunk (Jr./Sr. prom, I was a Jr. she was a Sr.), my image of her changed.
