At Jambo House Now-Saw a Cockroach and About to Cry

When I was younger we lived in New Orleans and would see them every so often. My mother was very clean. They are everywhere and are not a sign of a dirty house.

DH and I are with you, OP. We do not do bugs. Period. Hope your Kidani stay is magical.

I grew up in Florida and am terrified of the palmetto-bug type cockroaches - one was in my crib when I was a baby and I've had a phobia every since. I don't want to see them at Disney - but I will agree with PP that they are not about dirtiness or food - in fact, they don't hang out in garbage. It's the water they are after - and also the glue in cardboard boxes/paper bags.

They live in/love palmetto trees, which is why the stripped palmettos are preferable. We a huge unstripped Palmetto next to our balcony at OKW and it gave me the heebie jeebies at night thinking about how many hundreds of palmetto bugs were probably happy inside that bark. I made the mistake of leaving a beach bag on a balcony next to a palmetto once. :scared1::scared1::scared1:

I'm glad they moved you and that you feel better. I do agree with OP that there is bound to be an occassional bug that gets into a room. I never saw a cockroach (BIG nasty things) until I joined the Air Force and was in San Antonio. I learned to get used to them and good thing, because in NM it's a constant battle to keep them away. The worst bug I ever saw was in SC..a seven year cicadaI think it was called. Holy Moly. And I see tarantulas and scorpians alot.. Anyway..glad your trip is going better and hope you like Kidani.

Yikes! Sorry to hear that, at least you get to go to Kidani! The night I checked into Jambo I was in room 5212 and the housekeeping staff thought it would be a good idea to sing and whistle as loud as he could at MIDNIGHT while stripping and mopping some floors two rooms down from mine. I called the front desk and it stopped after about 15 minutes. I mean really who thinks it is OK to do that in ANY hotel???!!

As noted above, if the bug is a palmetto bug (BIG, flying cockroach) that is not a sign of uncleanliness. It's a sign of being in a densely wooded area in Florida.

If it's a small roach (German Roaches?), that might be a sign of uncleanliness...or it might have just wandered in from outdoors.

Bugs, lizards, frogs, and snakes are just a fact of life in Florida. And rats and bats and bunnies and deer and otters and alligators. And here in South Florida, not only alligators but also crocodiles!

If you think palmetto bugs and love bugs are bad, I'd like to introduce you to Black Salt Marsh Mosquitos, horseflies, and deer flies. Now those are pests!

My goodness, you are at the ANIMAL KINGDOM aren't you? Wait until you get a little lizard in your room through an open patio door or via your luggage transferred to Kidani by cart.

I'm sorry you don't understand the flora and fauna of Florida.

I totally understand the op's feelings about bugs. I absolutely hate them but I don't think it would make me want to change rooms. I think that the fact that her room was so dirty to begin with is being escalated by the sight of that darn insect. We found a rather large lizard on our porch at OKW once. Ewwww :scared1:. We stayed inside until it finished whatever it was doing and went on it's merry way. OP, I hope the rest of your birthday trip is as magical as you wanted it to be. :goodvibes

Hello, I have to say I am actually terrified of those little german brown roaches. OMGosh, I lived in Toronto where there are serious infestations. Twice I had to move out of my condo where I lived..2 different places no doubt!! Those things divide and multiply like no tomorrow..and they just keep coming back..EEUUHGH!!

That said my grandmother lived in florida for years. One time I was about 6 years old in the toyroom sitting, playing for about 2 hrs... I was in my nightgown and finally stood up. Lol, I had been sitting on one of those Big black cockroaches the whole time!! lol I dont mind those as much, they dont live in dirtyness and it was ok because it was at my grandmothers house lolll.:confused3

Please let me know which type is there, I have 2 Jambo ressies in a studio..one in Nov. and one in March. I hope I dont have to change them:eek:

PS HAPPY KIDANI VACATION!!!! :)

You will find palmetto bugs or water bugs at every single resort at WDW.

The reality is, that these bugs are everywhere in Florida. Flipping out because you saw one, I will never understand. Believe me I have seen my fair share of them while in Florida (Navy barracks, the cockroaches outnumbered us by about 200-1). I'm not a big fan of snakes or rats, and I have seen both at Disney. I saw a huge rat last year at Magic Kingdom during the Halloween party. IMO Disney does one hell of a job keeping the place as clean and bug free as they can. Will this happen? Of course.

I thought all insects were cute loveable things like Jiminy Cricket? I mean, the cockroach from Wall-e was adorrrrrable!!

Im a bug hater...I probably would have jumped out of the window...sorry you were assaulted by that COCKRoaCH

IMO OP is really overreacting. We live in a very damp area and have to deal with roaches a lot. We have Terminix come in and spray quarterly and that keeps them under control. It's just part of life. Now if it was snakes that would be a whole other matter :).

The Cockroach is from Wall-E. Just make sure they did not charge you for a extra guest, and give him a key with charging privileges. This is similar to my experience in Feb.

I believe that the OP had a very bad experience. First with the room being dirty when they checked in. Then finding a roach.

I completely understand the logic. I don't feel the OP overreacted one bit. I would have also complained as well. Being in disney doesn't make it impossible to find bugs but I have never in all my travels found a roach in any hotel room or resort I have stayed in. ( well there was this one time I found a roach but that was left over from the hippies that were there before me:rotfl2:)

Any hoo, I feel the OP had every right to be grossed out and complain. bugs don't bother me but hey we all have our fears and the OP deserves to have theirs respected.:thumbsup2

Very true, the OP certainly had a reason to be freaked out. But as others have said, the Palmetto bugs are not an indication of unclean conditions, they're just icky, so it would be nice to know which member of the roach family the OP is dealing with. I've had Palmetto Bugs (we call them waterbugs here in TX) at OKW, along with the occasional frogs or lizards in the room. I killed the bugs, and took the frogs and lizards outside. I've also seen several snakes outside at OKW.

" I told him I have stayed on Disney property 11 times and have NEVER seen a cockroach before."
Well you should play the lottery because you are very lucky! Seriously....your in Florida, they have bugs.

We have been visiting WDW every year since 1997 and we saw our first Palmetto Bug there last summer. It was while playing miniature golf and it gave me the heebie-jeebs! :scared:
We have seen one in our DVC villa, but not in WDW. We had one in our villa during our only stay at Hilton Head Island. Then while taking a stroll on property one night, we had seen MANY of them crawling all over the grills. We haven't been back since!! :scared1:
I have to say though, I am somewhat reassured by the pp's saying that it has nothing to do with uncleanliness. I understand now that it is quite common to find them in the south.
I am glad that the op has been moved to Kidani. I hope that you find "magic" during the rest of your trip. :wizard:
Wishing you a very Happy Birthday! :goodvibes

I don't mind gators. I would love one as a pet if I was guaranteed it wouldn't eat me. I don't mind lizards or turtles; I think they are adorable. I don't like spiders, I have DH kill them in the house when I see them. I have been brave enough to kill a few on my own if need be. I do not, will not and never had stood for COCKROACHES. To me, if it's in a palmetto tree, it's a "palmetto bug". If it's under my kitchen sink, it's a COCKROACH! I don't go for that I "don't understand the flora and fauna of Florida. As I said before I have been here NUMEROUS times and I have never run into a cockroach in any hotel/resort I have said in. That goes for some less than fabulous ones on International Drive. In this case, I do believe it was a cleanliness issue. Before we left the old room, the pest control guy came and he was VERY sympathetic. He saw we were changing rooms and he said he didn't blame us in the least for not staying.

BTW: I majored in Anthropology, with minors in archeaology, geology and astronomy. I can handle a lot of icky things but NEVER COCKROACHES. That goes for lobsters which are basically just sea dwelling cockroaches. Indiana Jones had his snakes, I have cockroaches. My new mantra is, "Cockroaches. Why did it have to be COCKROACHES!"

Anyway, we are here at Kidani. It is fresh and new and the staff is fantastic!
We were put in a handicap accessable room. I'm not particularly fond of those rooms but it is HUGE and it is the last room available. I'm happy now.
Since the room was not ready at Kidani when we arrived, the manager gave us credit for dinner at Boma and made us a reservation. We are stuffed and tired and we need to unpack now.

Thanks for all your input and support. I will now resume my vacation. :hippie:
