At Jambo House Now-Saw a Cockroach and About to Cry

OP is very happy to report that I have not seen any cockroaches since we moved from our room at Jambo.

Our DVC Guide called us because she noticed we moved to Kidani and wanted to know why. I told her what happened and how so many people are saying that "it's a Florida thing".
She said it may be a Florida thing but its not okay for them to be in our hotel rooms!

I don't care what kind of "thing" it is. I am not staying where I see roaches and that's just me. Maybe other people enjoy roaches but I do not.
Trip has been great since we bid farewell to the little sucker. I hope the bait the pest control guy used sent him to his maker and he is in all his glory in the Great Big Trash Can in the Sky.

I'm glad your vacation has improved and that you are happy now.

That being said, I think you over-reacted... to everything. From your room not being ready (not great, worth complaining about) to being ready to cry and sell your DVC over a roach (not really even worth mentioning in my book, but I'm a Fla girl), it's a bit over the top.

Your expecations are unrealistic. There will be good things and bad things...DVC isn't perfect. It's way better than stuffing to a Pop Century room for a week, though. It's even better than a room at the Poly, in my book.

Great news! And I am with you 100% on expecting a bug-free room. Others flip-out over hair on the bathroom floor or an unemptied wastebasket. That is their right. I think we need to keep our room standards high. Each of us has different issues that make a room unacceptable. For OP (and me) it is bugs. I am glad OP complained.

I do not believe that it is an "unrealistic expectation" (as a poster above put it) to expect our DVC rooms to be free of pests such as cockroaches. We are paying a premium fee for maintenance which includes pest control. Like I said, I haven't seen a cockroach in any of our eleven trips to Florida. To see one under the kitchen sink in my AKV room was a shock to me.

We had housekeeping issues at Jambo house too. When we were there in January, our room was not exactly spotless, and when I ordered a full cleaning (that I would pay for), I got kind of a glofrified trash and towel with new linens, but no cleaning. I did express my disatisfaction nicely, and they came up and finished the cleaning and also didn't charge me for it. Today at OKW, I asked the manager exactly what is to be expected with an ordered full cleaning, and he said it should be the same as cleaning between visits. He also said that if ANYTHING is not cleaned to your satisfaction, you should let the front desk know immediately so they can have a record of it and correct it.

Your experience has me really concerned about the Jambo rooms. Even in Concierge our first trip, we were a little disappointed with housekeeping. We can hope that Kidani will be different, since they will be all DVC and will know what is expected.

OP, I have one question about something you said in your original post. You said the bathroom vanity had a curling iron burn mark, and I'm wondering how you burn granite. I do rememer there was a shelf above the vanity, is that what you were talking about?

Thanks. :thumbsup2

I can understand not wanting a bug in your room....who wants a bug in your room? But wanting to sell your DVC over it?

I've never seen a bug in my DVC, other than on the patio. Although frankly if I did, it wouldn't even be novel enough to store in my memory. After thousands of days of LIVING in Florida, I've seen plenty of roaches.

We're staying at Jambo house in a few months. I'm curious to see if those housekeeping problems continue.

I've stayed at DVC about 40 times, and while there have been occasional problems, other than the hard as a rock OKW bed, I can't think of anything that was vacation-ruining.

I'm just sending you some :grouphug: Try and enjoy the remainder of your trip and your birthday!!

Note to cockroach haters (and a cockroach by any other name, ie. Palmetto Bug, is still a cockroach)....

don't even think about visiting the Phillipines. The ones here are small and mild in comparison!!! :scared1:

My dd had to dissect a Madagascar cockroach for her college biology class. She said she did the lab without actually looking at the thing.

BTW: my favorite elimination method: suck them up with the vacuum cleaner. Doesn't leave a black spot on the floor/wall/ceiling/curtains while smacking them with your shoe. Plus it's kind of fun to play "catch the cockroach" with the end of the vacuum hose (my ds is really good at it).

Ah, life in the south.

I will not step on a cockraoch either...they pop.

I think some are missing something in this thread. I think most of us understand that bugs can get in anywhere and especially in Florida. Does not mean they are pleasant or acceptable.

However the main thing that bothers me is the treatment of the DVC member that had a legitimate complaint. Believe me if this guest had been a paying AKL guest, it would have been different. That is my biggest complaint about DVC lately. There has become this division of service and upkeep of resorts between DVC and non.

If you have not personally experienced the difference by staying at DVC and having problems and staying at nonDVC and having problems you would have no idea what it is like.

To the OP please write a detail email to MS when you get home. At this point due to management I am not sure it will help but nothing will change if as members we are willing to accept this.

I love going to Disney and until recently loved my DVC, I want them to fix it, not force me to sell.

Our dues are high enough to warrant great service and maintenance similar to nonDVC. I have to wonder where the money is going, and it is very upsetting to find DVC rooms in bad repair when DVC management is moving into a very new, very high class building. Doubt they had roaches over there. :sad2:

Ok, this is THE final straw. I posted last night about how housekeeping had not cleaned the rooms on the 5th floor of the villas when the front desk had handed out keys. Our room was gross but the room that was attached to ours was even more disgusting. We got a housekeeping manager to come in and they began working on the rooms. Fine.
I commented here yesterday about the conditions of the rooms. I said how things such as light bulbs weren't working. There are curling iron burn marks on the bathroom vanity and the shower needs caulking. Fine.

BUT.....today, just now after we have been here two nights, I opened the cabinet under the kitchen sink and saw a COCKROACH scattering about!!!!!
I am freaking out! I have not seen a cockroach since I was a child and my family moved out of a dump of an apartment in Chicago. I am so upset, I am about to cry, literally. I am terrified of most bugs but cockroaches are where I draw the line. Now I am petrified that we are going to end up bringing some back home in our bags. This is unacceptable. I called housekeeping and they are sending pest control. I asked to speak with a maintenance manager and he acted like it was no big deal. He said. "Unfortunately, we do get a lot of those bugs here in Florida." I told him I have stayed on Disney property 11 times and have NEVER seen a cockroach before. He just reiterated his first statement and said he will send pest control "a little later." I asked him to please send them IMMEDIATELY.

I can't take this. The trip to Jambo has been terrible from check-in until now.
This is supposed to be my birthday trip and all I want to do is sell my membership.

Cockroach??? In Florida?? And in a 10 year old resort?
No Way!!!

Just pretend it's part of the whole animal savannah experience - this animal just happened to get in your room! Be glad the really BIG animals on the savannah don't get in the room...Zebras are bed hogs and giraffes use all the toilet paper!!!
:rotfl2:

Since the EPA has eliminated the use of DDT, a lot of insects have been on the rebound. This may be one of the reasons that Disney has been unable to eliminate the problem. c-roaches are one of the most indestructable creatures on this earth!

Glad to hear that your vacation has improved and you are enjoying Kidani. :thumbsup2 We were at AKL on the 5th floor last month and one morning dd10 found a big bug on the bathroom floor. Dh bagged it and then brought it to the front desk. End of story for us. Different people react in different ways - sorry that it bothered you so much.

:lmao: my chuckle for the day...such a funny visual (ok, maybe not to those that hate bugs) I can just picture this.. walking through the lobby bringing this baggie to the front desk! Here ya go...all yours!

Maybe it was one of the Madagascar Hissing Roaches that they have at Conservation Station.

It was a 1 bedroom value room.
The view was of the parking lot. I had read that many of the value rooms have views of the pool but each time I have booked a value room, it has overlooked the parking lot.

My father, who is almost 85 and in reasonably good health, said he used to rub down cows and horses with DDT and then just rub it over his chest and shoulders. My first cousin said he would do the same thing. A little bit apparently stays in your system, because my cousin says he's never had a problem with mosquito bites.

The liberals had to ruin everything, and now we're all covered with mosquito bites and the sobs of distraught women can be heard outside of hotel rooms across America.

You are so right!!!

I hope the OP realizes that people are just humoring her and that she is living in a fantasy world if she thinks there is a such thing as a "bug-free" room - especially anywhere in the south. Not to freak her out, but I would be willing to bet that there are several bugs and spiders hiding in the crevaces of her new room too, maybe including cockroaches. The only thing unusual about the other room is that she happened to see the bug, they usually stay well hidden and move quick. All the room change did was to let her return to a state of ignorance is bliss. Bugs will always find ways indoors, and 99% of the time it has NOTHING to do with cleanliness or the upkeep of the room, even in the case of cockroaches.
