At Jambo House Now-Saw a Cockroach and About to Cry

I believe that the OP had a very bad experience. First with the room being dirty when they checked in. Then finding a roach.

I completely understand the logic. I don't feel the OP overreacted one bit.

Any hoo, I feel the OP had every right to be grossed out and complain. bugs don't bother me but hey we all have our fears and the OP deserves to have theirs respected.:thumbsup2

agree 100%, sorry OP:sad2: take solace that u were moved in timely fashion!

we had an issue @ BCV couple of years ago:rolleyes1with a large swarm on the wall above the sofa bed after returning from pm EMH @ MK:scared1:.

manager MIA (never did speak to him that night despite repeated attempts to reach him). Was told no room @ any inn DVC sold out:sad1:; i spent the night sitting in chair w/flashlight while family slept. Next day when repeated calls not doing the trick, trudged to lobby, still no mgr to be found according to check in desk. I decided to vent to the person @ bell services desk (very loudly). They promptly went in search of & found an asst mgr in the back room. I insisted on complete fumigation, they complied although not until later that afternoon. I complained via letter to exec offices and was contacted & assured that the mgr was reprimanded.:thumbsup2 Issue not so much the bugs...it was the lack of response...a mgr should be available 24 -7 IMO.

i won't get into debate of identifying a roach (ex is an exterminator, have some experience;)).

I do shudder everytime Xmas rolls around and i read posts re DVCers bringing Xmas lights to place on the balcony...running an extension cord in thru the slider. The bugs can squeeze thru the tinest crack:confused3, no wonder they have issues; between that & guests leaving them open for fresh air.

I would suggest that Jambo House is not, in fact, infested with cockroaches throughout the walls, since yours is the first report on the entire internet (looks like swan/dolphin have had some issues though - eek!). Moving down 4 floors should do the trick. I would definitely call your guide as well, however.

You've read the entire internet?

I understand that bugs are a part of life in Florida, but I, like the OP would not be happy to find a cockroach or Palmetto bugs in my room. I think we need to admit we all have different tolerance for bugs and other creepy things. Some of you may think my somewhat blase view of earthquakes makes no sense, but I grew up in So. Cal, so to me its a fact of life. A few months backs we had an earthquake in nearby Chino and I read 4 or 5 different threads talking about how folks were considering canceling their trip to DL because of the quakes. Those of course seemed silly to me, but hey I am use to them. For me, cockroaches are not a part of life, and no matter what you call them, they gross me out. So OP I am totally sorry you were grossed out and a little freaked out by your experience I would have been too!! I hope your b-day trip improves!!!!

Not to groose anyone out, but do you ever eat out? Any food service place from your local McDonalds to the fanciest 5 star establishments have pest problems, same goes for any hotel or resort, more so with any that have food service along with the lodging, its a never ending battle to "control" the pests, elimination is not possible.

I am sorry you are not having a good trip but I would not worry about bringing them home in your luggage, where I work we always (unfortunately)have roaches and in over 20 years I have never brought one home.

The only time I have seen a "palmetto bug" at WDW was at BWV. A friend and I left the patio door open while we were watching Illuminations, I'm sure that's how it got in, it was right by the door when we saw it.

Was it the small "kitchen" roach common in many areas (German Cockroach), or was it a large (about the size of your thumb) American Cockroach AKA Palmetto Bugs? If it was a big one, they really are common throughout the Southern states. Nothing will keep them out in dry weather. They do not have a ton of offspring like their German Cockroach cousins, and they are not a sign of anything being "unclean." These ugly bugs fly, and may have flown into an open door when you, or a previous guest, went out to enjoy the their balcony view. We've often had them here in Texas just fly into the house when we were on our way out. As icky as they are, Florida has them, just like Florida has snakes, field mice and rats, alligators an other pests. Disney really can't prevent them, as I said, they'll simply fly in or crawl though any opening to find moisture, especially in warm weather.

The first cockroach I ever saw was at OKW, matter of fact, I think it is the only one I have ever seen! I left the sliding glass door cracked open and when we came back from the park, there it was on the bathroom wall!:scared1: It startled me! I asked my husband if that is what that was and he just laughed and said, "yes!" Needless to say, he took care of it and I made sure I shut the door before we left the room!

My brother is an entomologist (ie, bug caretaker). I asked him if cockroaches were a sign of uncleanliness and he said NO, absolutely not. According to my brother, cockroaches exist on every continent except Antarctica. They are everywhere and very hard to get rid of. They do not live in walls. The likeliest place he said they would live is in an open drain or near a water pipe. They like water. They are only hazardous to humans because many people are allergic. My brother mentioned that it is far worse to see fruit flies and black flies than cockroaches. Though ugly, cockroaches do not carry diseases and pathogens like flies.

He also said DO NOT CRUSH them. Apparently the mother cockroaches carry around eggs and young on their backs. If you crush it with your foot, you walk around with the eggs attached to the bottom of your shoe, thus ensuring the bugs' survival and spread!

Even with the small German cockroaches, it's not always a cleanliness issue, it's a food issue. Even the cleanest house can have cockroaches if they can find enough food to survive. I was told once that it's possible to bring one home from the grocery store with your groceries.

That's not to minimize the OP's pain -- I would have been upset if my room wasn't clean and had cockroaches. Palmetto bugs don't bother me though -- my sister used to go to school in Dallas and they were everywhere. We had one or two show up in our villa at HHI and because of visits to my sister, I was able to recognize the difference, otherwise I might have freaked out.

You're at the Animal Kingdom, it's an animal, no problem.
I understand that it might be audio-animatronic so I hope that you didn't smash it. That would appear on your room charge.

DH and I are with you, OP. We do not do bugs. Period. Hope your Kidani stay is magical.

Same here. We're also from the north and we're not used to being "okay" with bugs of any kind in the house. Bleech! It's one reason I could never live in the south. Bugs are NOT your friend.

In South Georgia and Florida we have these bugs. It is NOT a sign of cleanilness. It is a sign that there isn't enough water around so the bugs are looking for it. Mostly they are headed to the toilet or the sink where there is open water.

I am not commenting on the other issues you had, but, a cockroach (palmeto bug as we call them around here) are not signs of a dirty dwelling.
This sounds like the smaller indoor type cockroaches and not the large outdoor ones you are refering to. Once they get started in a building, I understand it's about impossible to get rid of them. But it's something that happens in the south with warmer weather and more bugs in general. We've seen similar resports from time to time along with the ant discussions. I can understand the OP reaction from a cleanliness standpoint but doubt it'll be the last time it happens at DVC, nowhere near close.

My goodness, you are at the ANIMAL KINGDOM aren't you? Wait until you get a little lizard in your room through an open patio door or via your luggage transferred to Kidani by cart.

I'm sorry you don't understand the flora and fauna of Florida.
And reptiles carry salmonella. Don't go to HI if these type things bother you. Come to think of it, stay in cold places and high altitutes and one will have less of these type issues. I think the OP had a series of issues that were cummulative in addition to what sounds to be a phobia. It happens. One spider and my wife is done, one snake and my sister will tear them a new door in the wall trying to get inside.

So it wouldn't gross anybody out if I gave a colorful description of the multi-legged creature that I found in a can of DelMonte Green Beans when I went to make my green bean casserole??:rolleyes1 I think it just shows that you just never know where you'll find a bug.

not me. We were in Cancun a few years ago and went out to a nice restaurant for our anniversary. My wife gasped and there was a caterpilar type worm crawling in her salad, fortunately whole. I was teasing her and told her that when I told my BIL she'd met the worm in cancun he'd think she'd been drinking tequilla. She said "why would he think that?". I told him and he said "so how'd you like the tequilla?".

This reminds me of a blog I happened upon (maybe posted on a thread here on the Dis?) about someone finding a snake's nest in their room at CR. It had slithered up to the top of the curtains and laid eggs. I would run screaming and lock myself in a bathroom!!

:scared1:
