At AKV Now

Hi WolfpackFan. I graduated from NC State but grew up in and am still living in Greenville so I am an ECU fan.

Wow!! I grew up in Greenville also. Graduated from Rose High many, many years ago. My father was on the faculty at ECU when I was growing up and I still have a brother that lives there. It's nice to see someone else from my hometown on the boards.

As far as your question, there seemed to be all kinds of activities going on for the kids. They had a monthly calendar and each day there seemed to be multiple things going on.

Nice talking to you. If you have any other questions, PM me.

Well we're back home after a great week at AKV. I am so happy we bought points there and can't wait to go back. But since we have three more trips planned over the next year, I guess I can stand a little time back home :).

To start with here is a link to some pictures I took - http://picasaweb.google.com/wolfpackfan/200712WaltDisneyWorldAKVIPhone?authkey=VGMpEz5M4jQ

I took these pictures with my iPhone and I was very surprised at how good they turned out for being from a cell phone. This was a new experiment for me - I was trying to see if I could use my iPhone to replace my laptop and digital camera and it did a great job. Unfortunately the upload seems to have mixed up the order. I tried to take pictures of as many Christmas decorations that I could plus the Osbourn Family lights.

Here are some random thoughts. If anyone has any specific questions, just let me know.

- We loved AKV (obviously). This was our second time staying there and the villas are really nice. There were a couple of very small negatives and I hesitate to mention them but what the heck. Just remember we would go back and redo the entire trip just like we did it, so that shows how insignificant they are. First, as mentioned, there is not a whole lot of storage as compared with other DVC studios we've stayed in. We did have a closet plus the wardrobe, but I realized the reason this morning. We had an end unit (unit 5501) which did not have a connecting door to a 1BR. Our closet was where the door would have been. So keep that in mind if storage space is important to you. Also, we thought the toilet/bathtub portion of the bath area was very dark. Other than that the studio was as good as any others we've stayed in (except for perhaps OKW).

- One negative we did observe was the bus service. When you stay at AKV, you have some mighty long bus rides to MK, DTD and Epcot. Also, the buses were very crowded at times. We found this especially true at AK itself. One time we had to wait for two buses to come and go before we could get on one. The line was way down the walkway headed back to the park from the bus loading area. IMO - AKV is a great resort if you plan to just hang around the resort a lot or plan to drive your car. But if you're hitting lots of parks, give yourself extra time to reach them especially if you have dining reservations.

- As far as crowds, it was very mixed. At times, the parks seemed very crowded; but at other times they were not crowded at all. One time we could have ridden Haunted Mansion over and over with no lines at all. Plus I did a walk on to Tower of Terror. Did not need a Fast Pass at all.

- I loved the food at Boma. It has got to be one of the most popular restaurants at WDW. Every night it was crowded. In fact, they have opened up a check in desk up in the AKL lobby. Other places we ate - the new Yak and Yeti (more expensive than I was expecting), Garden Grill (CP package), the Chinese restaurant at Epcot (can never remember the name). All the food was very good. We did end up spending more money on food than we planned, but what they heck this always seems to happen.

- This was our first time going to WDW at Christmas and we loved it. We couldn't get over how beautiful the decorations were. It really put you in the Christmas spirit walking around and looking at the decorations and listening to the pretty music. We did CP twice (once with dinner package at Garden Grill and once just standing in the back). It is one of the most beautiful Christmas performances we've ever seen. Plus the Osbourn Lights are really fantastic. We loved it so much, we've decided to go back next year with our grown son and daughter and actually spend Christmas Day there (plus some days before hand). We will be staying in VWL though because that is the only resort where I have enough points to make an 11 month ressie, which I understand is imperative if you're staying at that time of year.

- The new construction at Kidani Village is looking great. You can really see a lot of progress being made.

- Does anyone know what the large condominium type building is that you can see from the distance when you stay on the 5th floor? It is off-site and for some reason it really bugged me that I could see non-Disney buildings from my unit. From it's location, it would seem to me you would be able to see it easily from Kidani Village.

Well, that's all I can think of right now. One question for everyone - which is the more sadder day - the last day you're at WDW or the day when you get home? For some reason, I felt like it was the last day. I kept thinking yesterday we're going home tomorrow and I really hated the feeling.

I wonder if the building that you are referring to is the same one that I noticed from BWV. Could it be Bonnet Creek? I don't know...but from SV at BWV, we did see an off site building.

Wolfpack Fan,

Thanks for sharing all your pictures. I especially liked that you took ones of all the trees.:thumbsup2

I don't think that you could see Bonnet Creek from AKV. It is near CBR. Could it be the new Four Seasons resort? I didn't think that one was under construction yet.

No, that's not it. I looked on Google Maps and found it. It is some type of hotel/condo/housing complex with a golf course. It says Orange Lake on the maps. If you do a satellite view of it, it looks like a really nice place with a very nice swimming pool. It is off State Road 429. It would be hard to see unless you are on the 5th floor and on the trail to the right of the lodge (looking to the savanna, I can never remember the various trail names).

It seems like I also read that Disney is selling some land in that area for private development also. I had no idea that area was even there. If you're staying at AKV and need access to off-site stores like grocery stores, etc. I bet that area is a lot closer than any others. When we stay at AKV in March and we have our car with us, I plan to drive over and see what it looks like. Anyway, I just found it interesting that off-site development was so visible from a Disney resort. I hope it is not too visible to Kidani.

We fell in Love with WDW at Christmas time, three years ago. Everything is so beautiful. When we go at other times of the year the parks seem so blah, in comparison to Christmas time.

We have yet to stay at AKV, but have two trips booked. We only bought 175 points because of location. We were worried about the travel times to the parks and DTD.

Glad to read you had a great time and makes me look forward to our April trip.

Correct...the Orange Lake Publix is a stone's throw from there, where 192 meets 429.

Hi WolfpackFan. I graduated from NC State but grew up in and am still living in Greenville so I am an ECU fan. I still like State too though. My DH and 2 DD are going the first week in March and will be staying at AKV for the first time. I was thinking about doing a resort day one day if there were enough activities to keep our girls (11 and 8) busy. Do they have a lot of things posted that seem interesting? Thanks for any info. and maybe I'll see you at the next rivalry game.

:wave2: Hi there! Meredith grad here and I'm from Wilson. Fellow DISer, lauralee131, lives in Greenville as well. She owns at SSR.

Great pics from the I Phone...we are just going to have to plan a Xmas trip
Thanks for the report

Hey Wolfpackfan, we really enjoyed AKV as well. We had a 1-BR overlooking the Uzima savanna and loved watching the animals all day.

Since my wife was injured and really couldn't leave the room, it was probably the best resort to be stuck at! We stayed in a studio at SSR for the first night we arrived, and my wife kept saying how if she had to be stuck in a room, she much preferred having to look at animals all day at AKV then a golf course all day at SSR.

Thanks for the pictures. My son and I really enjoyed looking at them just now. Looks like you had a terrific time, thanks for the report :cheer2:

What great pictures! Thank you so much for sharing! I especially liked the trees and all of the topiaries. Beautiful! Well since I already have my plans for next August I will have to make my following trip a Christmas trip! The lights and trees and decorations! :santa:
Did you notice any differences in the Haunted Mansion? It was closed this past August.

Yes, the changes at HM are fantastic. They've added a number of new special effects plus they've added the story line of the bride who keeps killing her husbands. I always liked that story at Disneyland and am glad it is now part of the WDW HM. Plus the sound is no longer scratchy.

We were in the same room--5501 on 12/8 after our Disney cruise! We really enjoyed it and can't wait to go back in April.

Wow!! Great pictures of our room. Hope we left the room in decent condition for you. You didn't find anything we left behind did you? I thought the room was in a great location plus it was nice having the closet since it wasn't a connecting room.

We really thought the room was gorgeous and found it to be in great condition--much better condition that the 1 bedroom we stayed in at the Wilderness Lodge before the cruise (though we loved the WL too).

We were only in 5501 one night and didn't find anything lost, but didn't really look in any drawers or closets. We basically checked in, went to eat at Boma with friends we met on our DCL Mediterranean cruise that also happened to be there and went to sleep. We were up and out first thing in the morning to spend the day at MK before our 8PM flight home. Come to think of it, our boys did play hide and seek in the closets so I'm sure they'd have found anything lost! We really liked the room location near the elevators and an end unit. We will be requesting it again!

I have lots of friends who own at orange Lake and love it- they say it is really beautiful.

Loved reading about your stay- can't wait to sip a cold one myself and enjoy the giraffes!:thumbsup2
