What they did for me was put in three different manual coupons to add up to the total discount. $100, $100 and $80. $100 must be the max coupon you can use.
 
So I called my local target before driving up there since it's a 40 min drive and I talked to a lady at guest relations who said yes i could use 20% off on entertainment cards. I was so excited I hoped in my car and went right then got there got $2,000 in cards went to check out a young kid about 18 he scanned them all then scanned my coup not course it didn't work. So I told him I had called and talked to Pam, this young snotty manager came over and gave my attitude about even trying. I then proceeded to tell her others have gotten it to work at other locations and that I called before I came. Pam then came over and said she miss understood the question when I called and thought that they were asking if it can be used on entertainment like TVs, movies and so forth that's why she said yes. So I showed her several post on dis where ppl have got it to work by calling guest relations and we called with no luck. She wasn't willing to over ride it. She was very nice and agreed with me that they are entertainment cards and the coupon should have been more clear but there was nothing she could do. I also talked with guest relations while I was there at the store with no luck. So after a hour 30 min in the store I sadly left. I knew there was a chance of this not working but after reading on here it worked for several and then calling the store I had my hopes up. Ugh

No luck in Simpsonville, SC. They said the store manager already clarified that because it says "gift card" on them. I asked why they worked with Rx Rewards and Red Card, which also exclude gift cards, and they couldn't answer. Very friendly, but still has the sting of being a bit "unfair" that it is based on a store by store basis. Still 6 days to go, didn't use it yet because it hasn't worked, so may try a different store tomorrow.

Wonder if there will be an official stance by tomorrow.

Wording aside, it sounds as if they really shouldn't be included, and some places are trying to make the guest happy by overriding the system and giving the discount.
 

OK, so we got the 20% but after waiting quite some time for it to be sorted out! Myself and another lovely Dis'er argued with the store manager, especially when the 5% red card worked declaring that indeed they are entertainment cards. We demanded she call guest services, which she did. She spend about 1/2 hour talking to them and they finally allowed her to do the discount. She told us we were not alone and those managers who called guest services were being given authorization to do the 20%. I was glad we asked them to call.

To the Dis'er that I was there with today- thanks so much for your help! Glad we got it all sorted out and I wish you a very merry christmas trip! We will watch for you on dec 11!

It was great to have 'worked' with you today. I think we really helped each other to get this approved and of course, Beth was fabulous!

To the other dis'ers, we were persistent, not argumentative with the manager and she was great. We asked her to exhaust all possibilities to see if this could be approved and she did. She even thanked us for our patience while she sorted this out. The deciding factor in all of this was because much to her surprise, the 5% red card discount worked - signaling to her (and guest services) these were in fact NOT gift cards.
 
So you two ladies didn't know each other until today? That's a super fun story then!

Well, thanks to all the dust that a lot of people are kicking up over this coupon, I wouldn't be surprised if the pharma5 and REDCard discounts get rescinded sometime soon. However, to quote from Target's own website for the second time in this thread:
5% REDcard Discount program rule (Scroll down for Free Shipping at Target.com, REDcard Extended Returns program rule, and Target Pharmacy Rewards program rule):

When you use your Target Debit Card, Target Credit Card® or Target® Visa® Credit Card (each, a "REDcard®") at Target stores in the U.S. or Target.com, you will receive 5% off your purchases. If you use a REDcard in the same purchase transaction with another form of payment, the 5% discount will apply only to the purchase amount tendered to your REDcard. 5% discount applies to eligible purchases minus any other discounts and the value of any promotional Target gift cards received in the transaction. Target reserves the right to discontinue or alter the terms of this program at any time. 5% discount does not apply to the following:

Prescriptions, Target Clinic® services and Target Optical® eye exams
Target gift cards and prepaid cards
Previous purchases
Target credit account payments, Target Debit Card cash back and cash advances on the Target® Visa® Credit Card
Target Commercial Interiors® purchases
Gift wrap and shipping and handling charges on Target.com purchases
Where otherwise prohibited by law

The REDCard discount specifically excludes Target GCs and prepaid cards. It does not exclude other GCs. There is nothing ambiguous about that.
 
Kebby, thr33boys Are you sure your manager called Guest Services my manager called and could not get approvel what is the store number and location. Anyone else who got approvel please post your store number and location also name of manager if you know it:sad::worried::(:furious:
 
I just left a Target in MI where I very politely explained the situation to a store manager and they happily called Guest Services to check.

Not only were we declined, we were told that HQ did not approve any of these overrides and any individual store manager who gives the override will need to eat the cost because the stores will not be reimbursed.

It also states they have the right to alter the terms of the program at any time.

I was denied. I was extremely polite and non-confrontational. It was completely embarrassing and time consuming. I spoke with two managers. They both spoke with corporate and said that they could not give the discount. They said that even though they are in the system as entertainment cards, they are still gift cards. They also said that corporate has received these calls all day and any store that had granted the discount did not have their permission.
 
I was able to get my $1000 Disney GC purchase to be approved this morning with the 20% discount. The manager had to manually put in the discount in multiples of $50 to make it work. I even managed to get the additional 5% off with the Red Card.

I was very polite. Apologetic for the inconvenience of having them override the system to get the transaction to work. The manager was super nice and I expressed my sincere gratitude for her efforts. She told me to enjoy my trip!!

Bottom line. Explain the entertainment card angle & kill them with kindness.

It is quite unlikely that managers will be bullied or pressured into giving any discount. I think they would be far more likely to accommodate your request when customers are NICE about it. Good luck to everyone else.

Of course they are. I don't know why people don't seem to understand that.
 
The fact that Target calls these GIFT CARDS "entertainment" card does not change the fact that they are in fact GIFT CARDS. We all know that. And with GIFT CARDS being excluded no one should have been surprised that they couldn't use the 20% coupon.

WOW - be nice!!! I never would have thought of that. Thanks, PP, for explaining how to do it. I'm sure the coupon will work for everyone, now that we know the secret.
