Are you required to tip for room service?

Is Room Service not a tip included in the tipping fees you pay?

I am only asking because I thought when I did Carnival it was on there and we tipped when we tipped our host and steward?
It is not included on DCL.

No, the auto gratuities only cover your room host, your head server, your dining room server, and your assistant server. Room service is not included.

On our Carnival cruise we tipped every time we received room service... (And we prepaid tips for the rest of the people).

If enough people "stiff" room service, I'm sure that DCL will be able to add a "service charge."

Stiffing or not, I actually prefer the establishments (DCL in this case) include whatever the "appropriate" service charge in the prices. That way, it takes away the guessing from the guests.

I've always been given a slip to sign from room service. I always tip based on what I think I'd tip for similar stuff at a restaurant. I don't know how people say they don't have a chance to tip when the slip to sign has a line for a tip.

I've never been given a slip to sign when getting room service on DCL. But I do always have a few dollars ready to hand to the CM.

I have never been given a slip to sign as well. But I always have the money ready inside a specially made Disney themed envelop. The server never seemed to expect a tip but was surprised and happy to receive it.

The menu has "Gratuity not included" printed on it toward the bottom.
The answer to your question is NO, you aren't REQUIRED to tip, but as with other people who provide a service to me, I do tip. I tip my hair dresser too :)

When I joined this forum in 2003 a popular thing to do was bring $2 bills for tipping room service. As always, tipping in a personal matter, but yes, a dollar or two tip would be what I would expect most passengers to tip room service.
Having talked to servers on various lines over the years, they know that some people don't tip, either because they don't know to, don't want to, or most often, because it is something not a part of their culture.

I wonder if the slip was for an order that had one of the "for sale" items on it? We never ordered any of the premium (for a charge) items from room service and were never presented a slip. I do agree, that presenting a slip would DEFINITELY help with tipping and make it more convenient.

I make tip envelopes for room service before I leave home. I add $2 to each envelope. Once on board, I have a pocket (old blue jean pocket) w/ magnets that I attach to the wall close to the door w/ the tip envelopes in it.
Do you just use ordinary envelopes or do you make up something out of paper yourself? Also do you I like this idea. I assume it goes over just fine?

As far as I know, the slip only comes - and would require a signature - when something not "free" is ordered.

I have never ordered an item that there is a charge for and have always been given a slip with a place to sign. It says total $0 and then a place for a tip.

That is very odd that some get one and some don't.

As others have posted tipping not required; but we always do.
In fact, my wife and I sailed on the Disney Dream last month. We ordered breakfast from room service and when it was delivered; a few minutes later I notices I gave him the money from the wrong pocket and only gave him two dollars. So I went to the Customer Service desk got his name and left him what I originally intended to in an envelope with a note giving a short explanation.

Here is my take on the whole tipping for room service issue. Had I not either read this on DIS or in the passporter, don’t remember where, I would not have tipped and wouldn’t have felt bad about it or thought I was in the wrong.

This is why in my opinion I wouldn’t expect to tip them, and use my first ever DCL cruise as an example. When we boarded for the first time, we went to lunch in Parrot Cay and had incredible table service, better than most land based restaurants we have been too. When we went to leave, I was confused as to whether we should tip or not, we rightly didn’t.

Spin forward a few years and we had an incredible server at that first lunch and when he saw us throughout the cruise he lent a hand and said hi to us. We did give him a write up in our post cruise email, but did not tip.

Everyone on the boards makes a big deal that people should tip even if they don’t go to the MDR, etc. So can someone please tell me why I would know to tip someone that all they do is bring me free room service tray when I am not expected tip the breakfast and lunch servers that do much more for me? To me land based tipping rules are suspended once you step foot on the ship. Flame me if you want, but as I said, had I not read about it I would not have expected to tip. We are not cheap either, land based restaurants we generally tip 15-20%.
