I have seen people create a second account because they were planning a surprise trip for their partner. And their partner was also a member, I think. Something like that.
Whatever the reason, if you use a different email address... how would they know?

There is at least a handful of banned members who have returned under a new name. And I know at least two who lost their login details and just created a new account.
Unless there is a reason to investigate, I do not think they will go through the trouble.

I agree with you that they normally wouldn't care. I think it used to matter with known banned members, something they don't seem to worry about lately, and trouble makers trying to start again. I guess they don't care until they need to care and they would use those data points to help.
That is a bit more technical than I am on the subject but I think the only thing a VPN would eliminate the tracing of would be the IP address. Your MAC would remain the same and the cookie data would be intact as well as far as I know. I'd imagine there are other tracking points within the software that I'm certainly not aware of as well. Maybe someone with more technical knowledge could offer some input as well?
