Are the Days of Walking a DVC Reservation Numbered?

We both haven’t made the 1k club yet. I think I’m probably not going join any time soon. So close yet I think I am going to have to be done for a long while
What ya got there, 763?
We are very close cousins :)
I can't even imagine owning that many. lol

My plan is every other year, so i only need 1/2 the points, but even if i went every year, i think 400 or so would be more than enough, & that is not all standard studios. I guess bigger rooms & going more often adds up quick.

When it comes to rope dropping hours ahead of open, WDW never outlawed it. Instead they managed operations by preventing the ability to arrive more than 60 minutes before EE. VQ was actually another tool they created to prevent excessive pre-rope dropping. When RotR first opened, they realized it wasn’t really to guests’ benefit to normalize having to hit the park gates at 3am or risk being left behind. They tightened up the lots and stopped allowing entry outside 60 minutes to open, and started synchronizing resort buses and skyliners to arrive no earlier than 60 mins pre-open. The only thing left was walking from park adjacent resorts, but with nobody else lining up gone was the need for that small slice of guests to line up more than 70 minutes out.

Managing operations is key here. DVC has to maintain functionality. Sometimes that means preventing members/guests from trending things harder and harder. Management has to protect the experience. Ultimately only they have control. At least within reason.

Yes it does!
I have too many points I think for my needs, but I can always make them go away by booking larger accommodations.

I am staying in Poly tower next March. Between that and the Lodge I think I will have great temptation to add more, but perhaps I will sell one of my existing contracts at that point instead of just adding on.

We decided we love Aulani and that resort is point hungry. 1-2 trips a year we need 2 studios or a 2 bedroom. Footing the bill for the family also eats points fast!

One thing about my points is they're pretty concentrated, rather than spread out amongst many resorts.

That helps if you want to book more rooms or larger rooms, although I guess doing a split stay would be just as effective.

Like every other walking thread, this is just going in circles. I respect AstroBlasters for admitting what most of the pro walking crew won’t- he’s gonna get his and doesn’t care who it affects or how. That’s really the crux of this issue, because it isn’t a victimless practice. Not only does it impact people who are trying to book the weeks the walkers are aiming for, the walkers affect every week from the beginning of their walk to the target week. For people to say “just pick up the week day by day after the walkers pass it by”, while simultaneously bemoaning any restrictions to modifications that would have unintended consequences on “membership as a whole” (kinda like forcing them to make their reservation piecemeal in the wake of a group of walkers eh?) is so ironic that it seems like someone is putting me on.

The two groups are so far apart on what is acceptable that I’m not sure any concessions could be made that would be agreeable to both sides. Not that they will even consult membership for their opinion, but there are many smart people here that could likely come up with something better than Disney.

I liked a previous suggestion- all changes to the reservation must include at least x (1,2,3?) days of the original reservation or constitute a rebook.

I’m unfamiliar, but regardless it’s a weak argument imo.

So you opted to extend your stay.
A lot more reasonable than walking, clogging reservations for 7 days that are not intended to be used.

Never made a judgement one is better than the other…that’s a matter of opinion.

The purpose of both is to allow the owner to get a jump on someone else.

Well, I will agree to disagree at this point.

IMO it’s nothing more than booking as soon as the booking window opens. If that’s getting a jump on someone, then so be it.

Having previously lived in Honolulu, I get the attraction.
How long did you live there for? What part of the city did you live in?

I covered Hawaii as part of a sales territory for many years and know that living and working there is a different galaxy from vacationing there.

I always thought I would be a Maui person, but Ko Olina hits the spot for family friendly.

The only thing I really don’t like is that you can’t really go out and FEEL the waves…. Which I always felt gave my soul a connection to the earth.

But, my wife grew up in SoCal and has a fear of what can happen to kiddos who aren’t strong swimmers. Living in the Pacific Northwest… a lot less days where anyone wants to go swim outside.

Poly Tower looks REALLY nice….

And admit that getting in line early is a terrible analogy for walking reservations 🤣
I will do nothing of the sort! 😎

It’s just like how you can’t show up to Disneyland right at park opening. The security line can start an hour before the park opens. It’s just the way of things…. so I learn the rules and roll with it based on what I am willing to accept for a vacation.

Lived there almost four years. Had an apartment in the Manoa area (just up the hill from Waikiki) and loved day tripping to Ko Olina. If we didn't stay at Aulani we'd park in the public lot and hang out on the beach and swim.

Beautiful place, but a long way away from anywhere.

I think my position is similar to yours. Walking is the way things work so im going to do it to make sure I can book what I want. To me there’s no morality concern as Im using the system as designed to make the booking I want within the established rules everyone plays by. Now if I had a vote I’d support measures to block/limit walking because I do see issues with it but whatever new system they put in place I’m sure I’ll find the loopholes to that as well to get advantage when booking because I find the value worth my time/effort.

I would love to see whatever data DVC has on reservation modifications. It would be fascinating to see and sort through that data. Imagine the impact that actual data would have on this debate. :)

Here is one point for you. I modified the room for two of my four days of my January trip three times in the last three weeks!!! Lol

Yeah, the traffic going into and out of the city can definitely be a lot.
