Are Strip Clubs Normal/Acceptable?

My co-worker/friend ("Peg") is very upset right now. Her ex-husband is planning to open a strip club only a few miles from where their 11 year old daughter attends an upscale private school. Peg has confronted ex about it and he claims that she is crazy and that no one else would have a problem with it. He also said that he doesn't think their daughter would care if he ran a place like this because she's "open minded".

Peg seems to think that most mothers would be very upset in her situation. She thinks it's disgusting and that other kids from her daughter's school would undoubtedly find out that her dad owned a strip club. Ex thinks Peg should be happy to be getting extra child support. He insists that most people would agree with him and his right to own a strip club.

I know I can get a wide variety of opinions here...

That would weird me out too!

I think she is totally right to feel odd about it, but she can't really do anything about it.

Would not be acceptable in our neck of the woods for sure! :scared1:

So....if the ex has no problem whatsoever with them, will he be offering his daughter and her friends a job?:rolleyes1

There are quite a few where i live, but my dad owning one would make me mortally embarrsed!

Anyway people could not find out?

We have one about 10 minutes from my house and to tell you the truth, most of the time I don't think it's there it's so non-descript. I wouldn't want to live immediatly next to one, but I'm not opposed to them...then again, I use to work in one as a bouncer. Great job.

I find that really unacceptable and disgusting. I think those places are trashy and would be very upset if it were near my kids' school.

If it's a few miles away & it makes him money it wouldn't bother me. Around here, strip clubs are pretty nondescript on the outside. I couldn't tell ya who owns them but I bet they make a fairly nice salary.

They're cheesy exotic dancers, not hookers.

I doubt the kids would even have a clue. If kids ask what her dad does, say he owns a bar/nite club.

How will the kids find out who owns the club? I don't have a clue who owns any of the clubs in Dallas, not even when we lived closer to them.

It would be rather strange to have your Dad running a strip club though.

If the area is zoned for it, then I don't any problems with it.

You can not just say that a properly licensed and zoned business can not be open in the area.

We have an adult toy type store on our main strip. It is right with the applebees, brake shop, deli etc. No way is it a bad area or anything like that. It is perfectly fine being there.

I know strip joints are different and normally they are zoned to be in more industrial areas of the town. That said, I don't have any problems with them.

One opened here in our little town in the Bible Belt. It was all over the papers, in the courts etc. People for sure knew who owned it etc. right up until he shut it down.

Depends on how big a town. I think they will find out and I'm sure they will care. In time though I'm sure it will die down.

No big deal to me. Like others said how would they even know who owned it unless they go themselves. :rolleyes1

A little OT but funny. My brother married an exotic dancer (don't ask) and my BIL said "awesome, now we have entertainment at Christmas!" :rotfl2:

I certainly wouldn't want one close to my kids school, but if I had an EX and he wanted to open one it wouldn't bother me. Theres no way I'd let my dd visit him on bring your child to work day thats for sure.
I have seen some real dives and some nice Gentlemens clubs (only from the outside) and they just look like regular bars. Sometimes the names give them away, but I don't think a kid would pick up on it. I don't think any kid would find out her dad owned one uless she told some friends and then word got around. Of course who knows I'm guessing she'll be in 5th or 6th next year and they know alot more now then when I was that age :confused3

As long as it is a legal business, I have no problem with it. DD's older sister owns a tattoo and body piercing parlor which on the scale of things that people look down on is probably right up there with strip clubs. We've dealt with it. One teacher inadvertently had her in tears by making her feel there was something wrong with what her sister does. They were doing a project which involved drawing storefronts and she drew a picture of her sister's store. The teacher crumpled it up, threw it out and that was when she made a comment about trash like that doesn't belong in our town. When I heard about it, I was at that school pretty darn fast. That teacher and I had a talk - told her she had no business criticizing whatever people chose to do for a living as long as it was legal.

If my ex was going to open a strip club I guess I would take the same attitude. It's legal and if you don't like it, too bad. If you accept it, the child will accept it. A few ignorant people might make comments and they might be hurtful to the child, but I believe that is part of growing up. We can't protect them from everything.

We have an adult toy store by us. My problem with it is that it is right next door to where we get Chinese food. There are no windows so when it's warm they open their door which is covered in pictures of naked women. I have a big problem with that. Why should I have that smut shoved down my throat and my kids?? The strip mall is only made up of those two stores right next door to each other. If it doesn't interfere with my life and I don't have to look at it then I don't care but when it intrudes on my life then I have a big problem.

Oh I agree with you on that point. I have never seen any here in NY where you would see anything you should not be seeing from the outside.

Even the dives keep all the windows blacked out and closed all the time. Now that does not mean you should not be allowed to build and run them. They do have to be managed properly and if not, enforced.

I think if I found it that offensive, I would find another Chinese restaurant. And tell the one I was leaving why I was leaving. If enough customers complain, they would either take action against the adult toy store or they would move. By the way, if the pictures are what could be considered pornographic in your area and they are visible to anyone passing by, I believe you can contact the local police department as this is most likely prohibited by law.

There is one about 3 miles from our house. It doesn't look bad, but I still wait for ther day they close it.
