Hi! Could someone tell me if the beaver tails in Canada are really back? I thought I read in another thread where someone recently had one. I sure hope this is true. Anyone know for sure? :mickeybar

They weren't there last month, but I can check for you this weekend! I love beavertails and was bummed to see them gone.

I'll be on the lookout on Sunday!

Thank you, Jill. That would be great! I hope they'll be waiting for me when I get the the first week of February.

No problem, TWyn. I'll be back next Tuesday and I'll let you know. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they are there!

Hi TWyn,

I looked for you to see if Beavertails were back and I'm sad to say that they weren't there. Sorry! :sad2: I'll miss them!

Have fun on your trip though!!

Why did they get rid of the beavertails????!!!!!! I loved them. We went back to Epcot one day just to get another beavertail. My fave was the one with chocolate on it. :( That's soooo sad. Hopefully, they'll be back by Sept. If not, then that's ok too, cuz maybe I won't gain weight!!!! :)

I was really looking forward to trying them on my trip! Wonder why they got rid of them?? :(

Some say slow sales, others vendor issues. Either way, it stinks.

I'm from Canada and Beavertails are not as popular as they are in the US!

You can find them at the odd Town Fair's and in Ottawa however tourists eat them. Maybe it has to do with the million calories they have!

It's unfortunate that they are not offered at Epcot anymore however I can see why. What I will never understand is the whole Turkey leg thing - what's up with that?? The last thing I crave when I am sweating is a hot turkey leg.

Thank you for letting me know, Jill. I was hoping they were back, but I'm sure I'll find something else to indulge in. :mickeybar I'm heading down tomorrow, so I can't wait. :earsboy:

Once upon a time, Epcot-Canada beavertails were fresh-fried dough with toppings. The kiosk was set up with a hot oil fryer and you got to enjoy the aroma of your very own beavertail cooking!

A couple of years ago, they re-fitted the kiosk with the capability of re-heating pre-fried dough. There is a lot to be said for the flavor of fresh-fried dough that cannot be said for warmed-up pre-fried dough.

Conversely, from a production point of view (which I, the taste-bud customer, do not care as much about) the new beavertail took less time, less training and less likelihood of employee injury or heavy sweating in the summer months (the original kiosk had a hot fryer AND no air conditioning).

The downside of pre-fried dough, is that you have to have a supplier - which rumor has it, they don't at the moment. They can't return to the original fresh-dough scenario because the hot oil fryer is gone. So it goes.

What's my point? You aren't missing as much as you might think.

Still, if you are new to the whole beavertail thing, you might still be able to enjoy the current-version (when they return), sheer, fat-blast-with-caloric toppings without comparing it to the nostaligic, real thing.

(For those with a German background - or a German bakery nearby - you might be able to get a beavertail-like fix from the pre-Lenten fried dough equivalent (dont' know how to spell it, but it was pronounced "FASCH-not KE-gal) that should be available this week. Might have to supply your own toppings!)

I was at Epcot 10 days ago and had dinner at LeCellier. We asked our server if she had heard anything about whether or not the Beaver Tails stand would return. She said it had been decided that "they weren't popular enough" and would not return anytime in the near future.

The little stand where they had sold Beaver Tails was closed. During my last visit in December it was still open as it had been during the Food and Wine Festival and they were serving (among other things) Ice Wine. Guess that wasn't popular enough either!

I'm guessing that the tourism public is not ready to support an ice wine outlet at Epcot on a regular basis (like the $3 French / German wine stands). I live near ice wine territory (Niagara on the Lake in Ontario) and had my first ice wine last year, purchased at the winery. It was remarkably expensive - made from frozen grapes - with very little liquid per grape. Flavor was like a very unique liqueur - similar to blackberry brandy for sweetness and consistency but a really good flavor - also similar to port (for those trying to get a sense of whether to try it). One of the Airlines serves it in flight and rated it the best drink some recent year.

In summary, ice wine is unique and delicious, but very expensive (something like $6 for a 1 or 2 oz bottle - AT THE WINERY) - therefore not surprising that it is a Food and Wine Festival but not year round item. Beavertails are popular and relatively cheap for what you get. I never saw the stand idling when they were in fryer production. Did seem kind of slow when I stopped by last year. Since it is comparable to the fried dough (in concept) kiosk in the American pavilion, my bets are on the supplier issue.
