Once upon a time, Epcot-Canada beavertails were fresh-fried dough with toppings. The kiosk was set up with a hot oil fryer and you got to enjoy the aroma of your very own beavertail cooking!
A couple of years ago, they re-fitted the kiosk with the capability of re-heating pre-fried dough. There is a lot to be said for the flavor of fresh-fried dough that cannot be said for warmed-up pre-fried dough.
Conversely, from a production point of view (which I, the taste-bud customer, do not care as much about) the new beavertail took less time, less training and less likelihood of employee injury or heavy sweating in the summer months (the original kiosk had a hot fryer AND no air conditioning).
The downside of pre-fried dough, is that you have to have a supplier - which rumor has it, they don't at the moment. They can't return to the original fresh-dough scenario because the hot oil fryer is gone. So it goes.
What's my point? You aren't missing as much as you might think.
Still, if you are new to the whole beavertail thing, you might still be able to enjoy the current-version (when they return), sheer, fat-blast-with-caloric toppings without comparing it to the nostaligic, real thing.
(For those with a German background - or a German bakery nearby - you might be able to get a beavertail-like fix from the pre-Lenten fried dough equivalent (dont' know how to spell it, but it was pronounced "FASCH-not KE-gal) that should be available this week. Might have to supply your own toppings!)
