Are Any of You Familiar with Southern New Jersey (More Specifically Salem County)?

I realize this is a long shot, but I know many of you are from NJ & thought I'd give it a try. DH will be working in Pilesgrove, NJ for a total of about a month divided into 2 or more trips. I'm currently looking for the best place for us to stay. (My research has lead me to believe we won't be staying close to the jobsite, because there's not much of anything there.) We've discussed staying in Wilmington, DE one trip & Philadelphia another, but both are really further from the jobsite than preferred. Ideally, we'd like to find a home base that has plenty of places to grab a bit to eat, is an easy drive to both cities for entertainment & dining, & is closer to the jobsite. I'm not having any luck finding a location that fits all three desires, but I'm going solely off of online maps. I know nothing about the area. Is there an area that will fit the bill? If not, where would you recommend we stay?

PS: If you think we should be looking in the opposite direction of the jobsite, please feel free to suggest that area instead.

I'm not familiar with Salem County but I used to do business with people that worked on the NJ side but lived in Delaware or outside Philadelphia. They said the bridge and highway traffic could be brutal at times so you might want to look at that before deciding. Their office was in Haddonfield and I thought it was a very nice town. I don't know where in Salem County the jobsite is, or how long a commute would work but you might check into that town.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking it would probably be better to stay on the Jersey side of the river, but I'm having a hard time finding a decent size town to stay in. I was hoping members here could help with that, as you have. I'll check out Haddonfield.

Well this is a first....I spent my first 12 years in Woodstown (if you know where Cowtown is you know where Woodstown is....)
What about closer to the shore or the New Castle, De area?
I wish I could help with traffic - but my NJ travel is usually via Philly and/or on the weekends these days.

Pennsville? Something along US Route 40. I think there are some charming areas along that highway.

I actually found Woodstown on the map & already checked it out. There didn't appear to be a lot of options there for someone who would be staying in a hotel & eating out every meal, but I may have missed something. Should I check again? Unfortunately, I don't know where Cowtown is.

We'd consider staying anywhere. Where would you suggest that's closer to the shore? I'll look into New Castle.

Are you suggesting we stay in Pennsville or asking where he's working? (Sorry for the confusion.) Just in case, he's working in Pilesgrove. I'm open to any areas you'd like to suggest. I really don't know anything about the area.

I am suggesting that you look into towns along US route 40. It’s one of the scenic roads in NJ, Pennsville is just one of the towns.

Cowtown is in Pilesgrove, and the home of the nation’s longest continuously running rodeo.

You can look into the area around Salem Community College that may offer community events you may like.

Oops, I didn't know that about Cowtown, but I'm sure I'll soon learn all about it.

I'll pull up route 40 on a map & search the towns along the way & add the college area to my list. That should keep me busy for awhile. :teeth: Thanks for your patience with me misunderstanding you're previous post.

I understand how hard it is to go into a new area. I hope you find some place that fills the bill for you!

If you haven't seen this yet, it might help. https://visitnj.org/city/pilesgrove
Not sure what time of year you are talking about - How about a cabin at a campground? https://fourseasonscamping.com/camping.html

We'll most likely be there the last week of March, then again near the end of April. We won't know for sure, until the equipment is shipped. Unsurprisingly these days, the electronics are backordered.

Coincidentally, the campground is where he's working. We thought about staying in a cabin, but it's hard to get them when we don't know specific dates far in advance. I'm also not sure there are enough restaurants & stuff near there for days that we don't want to travel far for dinner or something to do.

Swedesboro is a nice town with easy access to the highway leading into Philly.

Thanks for the suggestion. Swedesboro is new to me. I'll definitely check it out.

Another vote for looking into the Deptford, Pennsville or Glassboro areas. We live in Camden County near Haddonfield and Cherry Hill . They both would be a bit of a commute (depending on your DH's work schedule).
I do recommend either visiting the Shore and/or Philadelphia on any days off.
P.S. Nothing against the Delaware side but traffic crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge could be an issue.

Thanks for the suggestions. When you say "visiting the Shore" what area do you recommend? Atlantic City is the only place in New Jersey that we've ever been.

DH will be off every Sunday & possibly Saturdays. It depends on the hours the contractors he uses are willing to work. We definitely plan to spend some off time in Philadelphia & Wilmington. DH has never been to either state. I've been to Pennsylvania a few times, but never to the Philadelphia area. Rehoboth Beach is the only place I've been to in Delaware. We're looking forward to seeing more of all three states.

Late March and April is still early for the Jersey shore, but you can pretty much just head east and pick where you want to explore. Ocean City, Atlantic City, Wildwood or down to Cape may are all decent choices. But again, it’s still off season then, so no crowds but not everything will be open.

We live in a beach town in South Florida. Which location would you recommend that would be the most different from our area?

Both Wildwood and Ocean City have boardwalks and are typical Jersey shore. But I hesitate to really recommend heading there unless you luck out with the weather. Spring can be cold and windy! (Especially for a Floridian!). I’d be much more tempted to send you to Philly.
