My daughter is at the university of Delaware, there are some good restaurants in Wilmington and Newark, and it’s a large college so I’m sure there is always something going on there.

I would also recommend Cape May for a shore town to visit. It seems to be opened all year long, not seasonal like other shore towns. I wouldn't recommend AC unless you like to gamble.

Yeah, we're not even considering AC. We were there once many years ago & don't have plans to return anytime soon.

I live in Cumberland county I work in Salem county. I can’t think of any nice hotels in Salem county. Maybe there are some by the turnpike. Delaware is not that far might be your best bet.

I wanted to make a dining recommendation. I know it's a little early since you don't know where you're staying but I would highly recommend The Franklinville Inn. It's located in Franklinville (like the name says LOL) and just of Rte 40. The food is excellent. We only go there for special occasions because it's quite a ride for us, if it were closer, we would visit more often.

I'd choose Philly, but I'm originally from Salem County and there's no way I'd want to be anywhere near it. OP, your DH has to since it's his job, but unless something extraordinary has happened in Pennsville, I wouldn't call that place "charming"!

My second recommendation would be to stay on the ocean side of the state, and Cape May is a good choice.

lol. That's how I feel about my hometown. If my family wasn't there, I'd never go back.

Traffic would make for a hellacious commute every day.

Speaking of traffic, do you guys think the fact that we would be driving from Philly or Wilmington to Pilesgrove in the morning & back in the evening would make a difference? I'm thinking we'd be going against traffic, but I don't know if that's the case or if it would make a difference.

Not real familiar with that area, but for day trips you might want to look into Cape May County Zoo, Historic Smithville and Wildwood Aviation Museum (actually in Cape May).

We love visiting historical areas. I'll look into Historic Smithville.

Thanks. I'll pass the info along to DH. Do the toll roads have a cash option in case we forget our Sunpass? DH's employer would be reimbursing the cost either way.

I grew up in Salem County. There is not much there. You should definitely find a hotel in Wilmington, it is a pretty short commute to Pilesgrove. He will have to go over the bridge ($5), but that is your best option. I live in PA now, but travel to NJ all the time to see family.

Good to know. I hadn't even considered an apartment, but would, if we decide to stay in Wilmington. I'm sure the company would be happy with that rate.

Philly is about 35 miles north and west of Pilesgrove. It would depend on where you're staying in Philly as to how rough the commute would be. I-95 traffic around the airport is tough in both directions at any time of day. From Center City or Old City you would have to get to one of the bridges into NJ (Ben Franklin, the Walt Whitman or Commodore Barry). Just getting to any of those would require either traveling eastward on city streets or southward thru the city to I-95 and then dealing with that traffic. I really recommend staying on the Jersey side of the river and saving visits into the city for weekends.

I am not as familiar with traffic heading from Wilmington into South Jersey. In all likelihood, you would take the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which means getting on I-295 northbound, which could also be a headache during rush hour.

I have just looked on line, and I see where some sites say YES. I have never seen anything but EZ Pass signs on the Parkway or the Atlantic City Expressway which are what I primary use. I may be wrong, if so, I apologize.

Swedesboro is a nice town with easy access to the highway leading into Philly.

My dad and stepmom moved to Delaware from Morris county, NJ and Swedesboro (exit 10) was always the "half-way" meeting spot. We liked to meet at the Village Pub, a bar/restaurant where the service and food were decent (pub food). That area seems nice, and a good central location with easy access to all highways.

As far as weekend trips to the Shore, I like Ocean City NJ.

Swedesboro looks like a perfect location that would be convenient for traveling to the jobsite & visiting both cities. That's very tempting. I'm just not sure there's enough there to make it home base. I'll research the area more, before deciding where to stay.
