Are Any of You Familiar with Southern New Jersey (More Specifically Salem County)?

Thanks for the suggestions. When you say "visiting the Shore" what area do you recommend? Atlantic City is the only place in New Jersey that we've ever been.

DH will be off every Sunday & possibly Saturdays. It depends on the hours the contractors he uses are willing to work. We definitely plan to spend some off time in Philadelphia & Wilmington. DH has never been to either state. I've been to Pennsylvania a few times, but never to the Philadelphia area. Rehoboth Beach is the only place I've been to in Delaware. We're looking forward to seeing more of all three states.
Based on the time of year you're visiting Cape May would be the Shore town I would recommend. Lots of Victorian homes and it has a small shopping area and restaurants that should be open . There are also some Wineries and Small brewers in that area to checkout if you are interested .
I recommend checking websites of any place at the Shore you want to visit to check their hours. Until late May a lot of places may only be open a few days a week.
Unless we get a unusual hot spell sitting on the beach isn't an option.

Both Wildwood and Ocean City have boardwalks and are typical Jersey shore. But I hesitate to really recommend heading there unless you luck out with the weather. Spring can be cold and windy! (Especially for a Floridian!). I’d be much more tempted to send you to Philly.

I can appreciate the wind there. The only time we've been to NJ I lost an earring on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. It blew out of my ear. They were to this date my favorite earrings, but we couldn't find it. At the time, our now adult DS was still in a stroller. I couldn't push him against the wind. DH struggled to. When we were walking with the wind, we'd let the stroller roll free for a little way. DS thought it was the best ride ever. It made for an experience we'll never forget. We'll check the weather, when we're there & will consider one of the locations you suggested.

Philly is definitely on the list. I've always wanted to experience the history there.

Cape May sounds perfect for us. Thanks for the heads-up on checking hours there.

My daughter is at the university of Delaware, there are some good restaurants in Wilmington and Newark, and it’s a large college so I’m sure there is always something going on there.

I would also recommend Cape May for a shore town to visit. It seems to be opened all year long, not seasonal like other shore towns. I wouldn't recommend AC unless you like to gamble.

I live in Cumberland county I work in Salem county. I can’t think of any nice hotels in Salem county. Maybe there are some by the turnpike. Delaware is not that far might be your best bet.

I wanted to make a dining recommendation. I know it's a little early since you don't know where you're staying but I would highly recommend The Franklinville Inn. It's located in Franklinville (like the name says LOL) and just of Rte 40. The food is excellent. We only go there for special occasions because it's quite a ride for us, if it were closer, we would visit more often.

I'd choose Philly, but I'm originally from Salem County and there's no way I'd want to be anywhere near it. OP, your DH has to since it's his job, but unless something extraordinary has happened in Pennsville, I wouldn't call that place "charming"!

My second recommendation would be to stay on the ocean side of the state, and Cape May is a good choice.

Cape may is great but it’s over an hour away.

I grew up in Salem County. There is not much there. You should definitely find a hotel in Wilmington, it is a pretty short commute to Pilesgrove. He will have to go over the bridge ($5), but that is your best option. I live in PA now, but travel to NJ all the time to see family.

Is Wilmington a safe area? Recently I have been researching some areas I have never been and was surprised to see Wilmington, De having a high crime rate.

It's a medium-size city located in the Northeast corridor between Philly and Baltimore. There are going to be areas that you would want to avoid just like any city.

It’s not Mayberry, but it’s fine. College parents stay there often, lots of restaurants. There is actually a lot of hotel information about Wilmington on the parent college Facebook page, restaurants too. Let me know, I can get info.
