Are all cruisers non-smokers?

disneyholic family
So fill us in on why the "kids" will be disapointed not going to the CLUBS which have an age limit on them anyway?

I'll throw my two cents in once again (and remember, this is from the perspective of a person who is very allergic to smoke):
While I would be very glad if smoking were not allowed in the bars, the other excellent aspects of Disney Cruise Line outweigh the limitations on my spending a lot of time in the bars. The 70s party is the only time we spend in Wavebands, and believe me, there is never a shortage of other things to do. I would prefer a smoke-free ship, and I'm sure I would LOVE the Paradise (we spoke with an RCCL crew member who told us that Carnival HAS put people off for smoking quite frequently...seems smokers take that cruise thinking it will be a good way to quit cold turkey, and then they get desperate for their fix). But overall, I love Disney Cruise Line, and the other advantages outweigh the fact that I have to restrict myself in a few activities to avoid the smoke.

Well, I spent most nights in the clubs on the Magic. Rockin Bar D was smoking, and from what I saw, most of US smokers sat on the upper level. That's what I noticed anyway, while I sat at the bar and smoked. Granted, I consider myself a considerate smoker. Off Beat was non-smoking, but I believe smoking was allowed in Sessions. Never went to sessions though.

On the other topic, the only night that Rockin Bar D didn't have a decent crows was on the LAST night.

I also, eat in non-smoking areas and get non-smoking rooms. Don't much care for smoke myself. I really didn't see it as a problem on the boat at all. Plus, smokers usually congregate and talk about the others :) (non-smokers)

Just my 2 cents :smooth:

Hi fireplug...

my kids are even more turned off by smoke and smokers than i am...
they turn veritably green if a smoker gets on an elevator with them (have you ever smelled a smoker in close proximity??????)...
since the ship is a somewhat closed place those smells must travel....
and if there's smoking on the open decks that would mean that any open deck the kids walk on will be a smoke-filled zone...
when WDW first became totally non-smoking it was actually enforced and my kids were as happy as can be...
last summer we discovered to our chagrin that the smokers (admittedly mostly european and south american) were smoking everywhere (not just in the designated zones of the theme parks) and the CMs ignored it....
now you may say it was outdoors and what's the big deal when you're outside.....
well.....when you're bothered by cigarette smoke, even the smoke from one cigarette somewhere in your vicinity will be upsetting...
i'm sure the boat smells.....it has to....
and i suppose the rooms smell too, simply by virtue of smokers having been in them (whether they smoked or not)....
to give you an idea of how much it disturbs us, once at the beach club resort they upgraded us to a larger room (slightly larger with a very large balcony and water view).....we were thrilled....until we stepped inside....it reaked of cigarettes.....my daughter wouldn't even stay for the 5 minutes it took me to call the desk to tell them we couldn't take that room, regardless of the upgrade.....so we waited a few hours and were put in a standard room with a standard view but without the stench of smoke.....we were content....
does that answer your question fireplug?

Is the MickeyPool the baby pool or is it a pool ok for the 14 ear old I am bringing?? The little boy already has cancer and it makes him absolutely nuts when people are smoking next to him, I always said that if he grows up he is one kid I would never have to worry about taking up smoking since he already had first hand experience what it can do to you. I certainly would not cancel the cruise due to people smoking on there though, that would be a bit drastic, we will just move around to avoid it.....my big turn off is someone near me smoking while I am eating, and since that is not allowed I can deal with the rest, though I really do hope that the person next to us doesn't sit on their verandah and smoke!

The mickey pool is the "kids" pool, but plenty of adults are in there as well. It's only about 1½ feet deep.

I can detect a smoker lighting up a mile away, and I have to say that Disney's ship and rooms do not smell of smoke, with the exception of a very few areas. The nightclub area can get pretty bad, and when the Promenade Lounge used to allow smoking, you could smell it all the way to Guest Services. But not that is no longer a problem (thanks, Disney!). The only area that still smells is around the nightclubs, and that is a very small area of the ship. I LOVE the fact that the rooms don't smell...that is one of my biggest pet peeves about hotels.
The only other place I've noticed that smell is when being near people (in an elevator or whatever) that are smokers. I swear, they must have no idea how severely they reek of it. I think they just get used to it and don't notice anymore.
I recently read that Holland America just banned smoking in their diningrooms. Can you imagine?!

Guys,

If this thread continues on the course it is taking, I will move it to the debate board. Please return to the original topic and question of the poster.

Each person needs to make his or her own decision on whether they will be affected by the fact that the Wonder and Magic are not non-smoking.

Actually, I think this thread has been quite civil. There's been good information to help smokers and non-smokers know what to expect on the Disney ships.

I'm both encouraged and discouraged by what Barb wrote. I don't suppose there's much of a chance that the nightclubs will soon become non-smoking areas.

While some of the responses are constructive, others are very unconstructive.

The original question was where can this person smoke and stay within the wishes of DCL.

This board is not the place to debate whether some people's decision to smoke will ruin the entire cruise for their family.

20% of the adults on the ship smoke?..
wow.....how many passengers on the ship?....2,600?....
of which probably 50% are kids....so that leaves 1300...
20% of that?....260?....that's a lot of smoke in a small space...

everyone has their pros and cons for doing anything...
disney is a pro....the smoke is a con....
i'll present this new information to the kids and let them decide....

I agree. In nearly every area of the ship, smoking is NOT a problem. The adult clubs were the only real problem. And yes, Studio Sea is NON-smoking.

If you are going to cruise, I definitely recommend DCL. Your kids will love it. You will love it. Everything else about the ship and the cruise more than makes up for the second-hand-smoke-in-certain-areas situation. In spite of the Carnival Paradise being non-smoking, I still prefer DCL. On any cruise line forum, you will read pros and cons. Nothing is perfect on any cruise, but Disney comes as close as it can get!

I smoked for 10 years...quit on my 25th birthday (almost 5 years now!) so I can see both sides of the story. (and you all know how terrible we former-smokers are :) I am allergic to smoke and so is my husband. We just returned 2 weeks ago from the Disney Magic and I must say that the only time we had a problem was the 70's night in Rockin Bar D. We were in Rockin Bar D two previous times and it was full but not jam-packed and we were just fine sitting on the lower level. We are both very alert to any smoke in the vicinity and on top of that, to us Canadians, U.S. cigarettes are WAY stronger than what we are used to here in Canada. Having said that, I was impressed that we weren't bothered by the smoke more often. On the 70's night, however, the place WAS jam-packed and it was VERY noticeable, so we left. I would have loved to stay, but it certainly didn't ruin our trip because we didn't see it. We saw many people smoking on Decks 4, 9 & 10 but it's so windy and open that we didn't even notice any kind of smell even with people smoking pretty close to us. If we had, we would have just gotten up and moved to a different spot. Being a ex-smoker, I HATE smoke....it just disgusts me now and I can't BELIEVE that I used to smell like that! ( I have apologized to my hubby for ever smelling bad MANY times :) but I also understand that people have the right to smoke and I expect it in certain places I visit...like a BAR or DANCE CLUBS, which is why we don't go to places like that. That's just life! Having a huge love for Disney, I wouldn't recommend cancelling your trip because of this issue. It's a great ship with so many things for people of all ages. Missing a few things in Rockin Bar D won't ruin your cruise. Plus, you can also try sitting next to some people who aren't smoking, you might just be ok there. As for elevators, we only used them twice and using the stairs helps keep those extra pounds off! I hope you keep your reservation with Disney as it is a MAGICAL ship!

I certainly wasn't aware that smoking isn't allowed near the Mickey pool. Is this new? If not, it certainly wasn't visibly marked or enforced on our 5/26 cruise last year.

Smoking is allowed there also. All of deck 9 is an open area and all pool areas do allow smoking. The snack and beverage bars poolside all have ashtrays available for use. Again, I have not found this to be an issue, and doubt people would have problems with this on the cruise. No more than visiting WDW or staying at a WDW resort would be a problem. Or anywhere else for that matter. BTW, I am a non-smoker. :)

I beg to differ. There were definately posted signs near the Mickey pool, Port Side, that stated NO SMOKING, on the 1/19 cruise.

What's that, Dave didn't know something? :D

the kids asked the following:

is there smoking on the sports deck (where the basketball is)?

they don't care about the pool area so much during the day (they have no intention of swimming on the ship), except in terms of getting something to eat there (specifically the ice cream)......is there smoking in that area (where the ice cream is)?...

they feel they will frequent the pool deck during parties....
they would like to know whether the smoking is bad during the parties on deck?....

as for WDW....the theme parks are completely no smoking except for very limited designated areas around the parks....however they were much stricter about it in the first year they instituted the policy....last year there were far less vigilent.....

The sports deck is on deck 10 far forward at the very front of the ship, a very windy area but it does have a windsreen to block the heavy breezes for the benefit of the sports area. I rarely saw anyone smoking that far forward though. It is just too windy generally, especially while at sea.

Actually the only place I noticed any smoke was in the bars, they are not as well ventilated as they could be, in my opinion. Even being a smoker I do not like second hand smoke, if I smoke it has to be in a well ventilated area (I sometimes wonder why I even smoke!!) The open decks are very breezy and any smoke dissipates pretty quickly. Plus there just are not a lot of smokers on a Disney ship anyway, compared to the general population.

And yes, the Mickey pool area has now been designated nonsmoking, the only area on deck 9 where I saw any smoking was near the adult pool and Signals bar.

My only concern, Disneyholic, is if your primary reason for going on the Disney Cruise is the adult clubs, as you stated, then there might be a better alternative you could find for your family vacation. First of all, kids aren't allowed in the adult clubs. Second, there are probably bars in your home town that prohibit smoking, and their is no need to go on a cruise simply to go to an adult night club. The Disney Cruise is an overall experience, filled with wonderful magic, theatre, food, incredible service, vista spa and excursions on the island. Generally, the night club action is a very small percentage of the time spent on the cruise. I've never noticed any smell of smoke in any of the rooms, nor had any problems encountering smoke on the decks. And I would not consider the Disney Cruise Line to be "small" for the amount of smokers on board. I can understand if you cannot stand the smell of smoke on an individual, but I would trust you run into that same delima in any of your day to day travels or restaurants. I think anyone who cannot tolerate smoking (and I understand those who are, or who have medical conditions that it aggreavates) should not attend any vacation where smoking will be present, if it is that bothersome. Cruises cost too much to "not enjoy". If smoking is going to ruin all the wonderful things the cruise has to offer, there is no sense in making yourself, or the kids, miserable. Perhaps I am just a very "unobservant" person, but it has never been an issue to me. And the fun we've had as a family has been incredible, along with the service! Nothing could keep me away from the Disney Cruise Line! (and that hasn't meant things have always been perfect. But overall, it has been a wonderful and magical experience). :bounce:

Yes, Pluto that must be something brand new. In fact, those are the only signs I have ever heard of for "No Smoking" on the entire ship. Interesting!
