RENEW will start immediately upon expiration of the current AP.

If you are not going until May I would let my AP expire, get a new one later.

The renewed AP will have the same anniversary date as the current AP.
That's what makes it a "renewal" of the current AP.

Agreed. You would be wasting money by renewing. If I were you I would purchase a voucher now to hedge against a price increase prior to your visit in May.
