my com was taken over by another healthcare agent--we were told we would be ok until the end of the yr as far as layoffs and downsizing go 1st false story

2 months ago we found out my dept was getting hit--although the new co said our dept was "lean" and wouldnt be touched--2nd false story

so I was planning on retiring before the end of the contract even though I was to young for social security --I wasnt going to go through a new contract with a new co that already has changed there stories

so when I went in to sign the papers there were how to apply for unemployment papers my papers said I was losing my job due to job elimination/ reorganization--so after my severance runs out I can go on unemploy.

Im hoping on going back as pool ( basically I fill in any openings in the schedule or if someone wants a day off I can fill in) but with this there are no set # of days or hrs you just work whats open and if you can

I just hope this wont screw up getting any kind of employment I know Ill have to let unploy. know how many hrs I did work in a given week and if I turned down any work

Ive never had to go on unemply before so this is all so very new to me also Ive figuring the unemploy will stop next yr when I qualify for social security

thanks all for any advice or tips or help

First off, losing a job sucks and I'm sorry. You'll want to find out how long unemployment lasts in your state. I don't think the federal government is supplementing what the states do any more. You'll also want to find out what the terms of unemployment are in your state because they are different everywhere. You'll most likely have to appear in person at least once for a session about how to find a job and how to keep your unemployment going while you are on it. From my experience you'll have to submit the jobs you are applying for at it will need to be a certain amount each week to keep getting your money. They'll also want to know any money you've made that week in whatever form it is.

I would suggest looking for something else until you can officially retire, but also consider that if you get social security at 65 vs 62 you'll get more. The longer you wait to start collecting the more you will get. I don't know what else you have to supplement your income but it's something to consider and it's why my parents waited until they were 65. To go along with that, you'll also want to make sure that the unemployment will cover your expenses, it may not be reasonable to not have a job at this point. You will have to find out the percentage of your pay they provide.

The other thing you might look into is a temp agency, if they have them for what you do. They may have temp to hire or long term temp positions that would allow you to work more regular hours without relying on unemployment.

You're probably eligible for unemployment, even with a severance. It varies state to state, but apply on your last day, or the next day, and they should ask you how much you got in severance. In CA you're asked if you worked or earned any money as one of the weekly questions and then depending on if you do a paper form or online you either fill in what you earned or they send you another form for that week. They then reduce what you get that week. In CA it's 26 weeks of eligibility in a 52 week period, so if you work one week and don't take UI then it remains in your 26. SS shouldn't decrease UI eligibility, and if you're still working you may be better off waiting to take SS. You really should meet with a financial planner who specializes in SS to figure out if you'll lose more in SS by taking it early than you'll gain by continuing to work while taking SS.

Sorry to hear this. I just went back to work last week after losing my job June 1. I collected unemployment from the District of Columbia but rules and the amount you can collect varies by state. The system was not as intuitive as I thought it would be and I ended up calling a few times because I wanted to make sure I was dong the right thing when I freelanced.

For the DC system, there is a waiting week after you file and then depending on how much severance you get, you won't be able to collect benefits until that is done. Then the filing is all online and they ask how if you've worked each week and if so, how much you earned.

I hope it all works out for you, good luck.

thanks all for the very helpful replies

I understand I cant start unempoly until my severence runs out which is Oct 10 there paying my severence as if it was a regular paycheck -since this is a Mon say on Tues I go on the website and put in that as of the 11th Im out of work?

what other questions do they ask when you apply--I like to be as ready for this as I can

for WI you have to put in that your also looking for work--if Im able to go back as pool since I will be working but absolutly no set days or hrs will I still have to look for work

I hate this timing could not have come at a worst time--although there never is a good time to be out of work--but I was planning on retiring next July when I turned 62 and could start SS even though Id be collecting it early at the time it was the right choice for us

however the new com take over now--then being told we were set till the end of the yr--which didnt happen

oh well thanks again--please anything else to add Im listening

thanks for the very useful link SMD--I was trying to find something like that--

however it mentioned that you need to let them know if your SS or if you have or are getting a 401K 403B or something like that

I did get a lump of my pension are you going to use that against me by filing --

in other words could I get denied unemploy. if Im getting SS lump pension or monthly payments--I sure hope thats not the case

that money is supposed to be used when I officially retire--I lost my job due to "job elimanation/ reorganization" thats whats stated on my paperwork

also I read there that you need to be looking for jobs which I have no no problem doing--however I already talked to the com about coming back as pool (filling in where theres openings in the schedule or if someone needs a day off they can call me

however there is no set number of #s its just whats opened--could this deny me unemploy or waive the looking for jobs end of it

thanks again for all the great help--I really hate this being out of work

You need to apply for unemployment after your last day. you will be denied with Severance in most cases (there are ways around this read the rules) once your severance is done or lump sum time as determined by your state is complete you need to reapply. If you do not apply on your last day you may not be eligible as there are rules on how long you must apply after your last day. Unemployment is very limited now as employment is high as they say... and will be reduced by how much you make from any work for any amount of hours.. partial payments are part of the number of weeks you are allowed. Your HR department will have full details for your state so the person you should be asking for ALL information and rules is them...that is your best and most accurate source of what you need to be doing.

If they are paying it as if it's a regular paycheck you might not officially be unemployed until that stops. They count by the earnings period - so a regular paycheck may say it's for working 9/19-9/23 so you can't collect for those dates.
I know my husband had to keep giving names of where he was applying even after he had a new job with a start date, so saying you are participating in some at will service likely isn't going to cover applications.

I think you can file now saying you are unemployed. Then you'll get a form asking you about severance.

Some helpful links:

You should file NOW, even though you have severance pay that runs out in a few weeks. UI benefits are not retroactive so it's better to file and be denied, then file untimely. The UI office will either accept or reject your claim and then you would tell them about your weekly severance pay that you are getting.

Then, once the severance pay runs out, you should hopefully be able to get the UI benefits fairly quickly.
