DH and I were tossing around vacation ideas for summer 2005. We are DVC members and seem to always be borrowing points. We decided to skip DVC next year and get caught up on our points. We talked about possibly England or Ireland.

Where in the world would we begin to decide and plan a vacation like this?? It would be DH, myself, and DSs ages 15 and 16. If you have traveled to any of these places, please let me know where and what you thought about your travels!!!!

Thanks,
Karen

No but I really want to go to Ireland one day.

You might want to hop over to the UK board here at the Dis, I bet they can help you with ideas for places to visit.

We planned our own trip to England & France using DH's frequent miles and frequent stay programs. Here is a website that I found very helpful- www.raileurope.com . You can buy bus & subway passes, passes for museums and attractions, and make arraingements for tours. Have fun! :wave2:

We visited the UK (pre-internet) with guidebooks. It must be much easier now. May I suggest that you check in on the UK board here at the Dis?

I went to Ireland in 2001. It was so cool--most of my time was spent in the west. I went to the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara region, Galway, Newgrange, and Ashford Castle. If you go to Newgrange, go early and with a tour service like Gray Line. It is UNESCO protected site which limits visitors. My in-laws rented a cottage outside of Galway at a reasonable rate. I used the Dorling Kindersley Travel Guides: Ireland with my planning. The pictures are excellent in it. I recommend doing some en suites in B&Bs. I don't remember which one I went to in Navan, but it was good and quiet. It was a magical trip. My then 12 year nephew had a great time. Make sure to pack extra batteries for cd players and such for the teens. Have fun!

DH did England, but that was before me. We have done Ireland and I love it there. We used Let's Go Ireland guide, and bits from Rick Steves. (www.ricksteves.com - awesome site!)

I preferred the west of Ireland, especially Galway. We stayed in Borris-in-Ossory, near Roscrea, in the middle. There were 5 of us and we rented a "castle." More like a big square keep, but it was fun. Rustic. http://www.castleballaghmore.com/ She also has a guest house and a cottage.

My aunt and uncle did the bed and breakfast thing. They liked meeting different people all the time. Funny thing - their dog got sick while they were away and my cousin called the B&B, but the connection wasn't that great. (Storms on the US end.) The poor woman at the B&B thought it was their daughter that was sick and might die and spent the afternoon praying in church for the dog, she was so worried. They had a good laugh over that after it was all figured out.

I would probably suggest some time in London to see the sights, museums and a few west end shows. Then perhaps some time in the Lake District if you wanted to see some beautiful countryside, or perhaps some time at the seaside. I grew up near Scarborough on the east cost which has some amazing countryside around it. Also if you like Disney and are in London, DLP is only 3 hours away on the train (you get on at London, go through the euro tunnel and straight to DLP.) I have always found Expedia to be good for making flight and hotel bookings.
I hope you enjoy your visit, England is a beautiful country.

Hi Karen :)

We have had several threads on the UK Community Board from US visitors - here are just a few on London.
I have to agree that it is well worth coming out of London to see the countryside and also there are some great cities with lots of history all over the country. (London is also more expensive!)

You are very welcome to join us on the UK CB and ask as many questions as you need :) and also if you are researching your trip and want specific info on a place, do send me a PM :)

Thanks for the information and sites. I started an England/Ireland favorites file for my reading pleasure once school is out. I also ventured over to the UK Boards!

We went to the UK twice quite a few years ago when I was in high school...we have family in Warrington.
