I'm asking for a friend. SHe has high BP and is going to start TTC. Everything we've read says Aldomet is safe but would like to hear some REAL experiences. THank you!

I have been taking methyldopa which is the generic for aldomet since April. I was taking 80 mg of diovan hct before I found out I was pregnant and now I have to take 1500 mg of aldomet. The pills are HUGE and smell funny. The only problem I had was getting the prescription filled. The pharmacist kinda laughed because these pills are like antique blood pressure medicine and he hadn't seen a prescription for them in quite a while. They don't work as well as the newer meds and that is why I have to take so much. My BP has stayed in the low 120's over 60-something the whole time. The baby is doing great -- she hasn't experienced any of the problems associated with high BP. Tell your friend good luck and not to worry:D

Not when I was pregnant but right after I had my DS4. My blood pressure sky rocketed during the last weeks of being pregnant and stayed up even after he was born. Since I was nursing, it was the only medication they could put me on which wouldn't hurt my son.

I also remember the comments about the "dinosaur" blood pressure medicine. When I changed doctors and needed a refill on the medication, I had almost the same reaction.

Best of luck to your friend.

I was on Labetalol for my high BP when I was carrying the twins.

I just had my DS 5 weeks ago. When I was pregnant, I was on both Methyldopa and Labetalol for BP. They are both "safe" for pregnant women as per my dr. However, I had a reaction to one of the drugs. It made my liver enzymes go wacky. Put me in the hospital for 5 days. I guess this isn't typical but it can happen.

As a longtime cardiac nurse I've seen pregnant women take many kinds of cardiac drugs during their pregnancies (including the hard core cardiac IV drugs) as well as undergo defibrillation and to my knowledge their babies have been ok. I've also been reading lots of breast cancer stories this year (since I had it myself) and read many stories of women who've undergone chemo later during their pregnancies (after first trimester) and had babies that were ok. Your friend's baby should be ok with the aldomet.

I took Aldomet for high BP when I was pregnant with my son..who will be 6 on Saturday. There were a few complications with my pregnancy but I'm pretty sure they were not related to the BP meds.

I took Aldomet during the first two pregnancies and Labetelol during the third. There are newere BP meds out there, just not proven to be safe, so they put you on those during pregnancy. I developed high BP during the first pregnancy that never went away. My own fault--I didn't take it seriously and I should have. Working on it now.

It's easy to get nervous about anything during pregnancy. The most important thing your friend needs to remember is to take care of herself and the child.

P.S. I was induced at 38 weeks the first 2 pregnancies, to relieve the BP issues on me (since the babies were considered full term and healthy). With #3, they let me go "au natural", but would have induced on my due date had she waited. I mention this because they sprung this on me a couple days before, and it was another "scary" aspect for a first time mom (what could be wrong that they want to induce?). But it's just that the kid is ready, let's get it out. I hope this helps to alleviate your friend's concerns. Feel fre to PM me if you have spcific questions.

Hi,

Aldomet is a 'dinsosaur' drug, but that's the reason it's prescribed so often during pregnancy. It's been shown the most often to be very safe. What you have to keep in mind, too, is that high blood pressure is dangerous also for both mother and baby. It can lead to small babies, prematurity, and many sorts of problems after birth.

hth,

rachel

I took it when I was pregnant with my DD, but I only took 1 pill and the next morning my water broke! But I don't think the medication had anything to do with it. One funny thing when I went to fill that prescription, the woman at the desk asked me if my doctor knew I was pregnant when he wrote the prescription. I looked down at my 9 months pregnant belly and said, I think so! But I know she was just doing her job and asking to be sure.

The neonatalogist told me today (34 weeks) that they would want to deliver at 38 or 39 weeks even though everything is going great with the baby and pregnancy. He said it was standard practice for patients with "chronic" hypertension.
