Anyone take a rice cooker?

And the idea about the fan in the bathroom carrying the odor away - well (1) those fans hardly seem to move any air and (2) I've heard of other people complaining that people were smoking in their room and the bathroom fan was bringing it all into their room via the bathroom.

there is some Disney info somewhere that I've seen posted before about no cooking appliances in the room - the topic comes up on the Budget Board a lot!

Thanks. I've been convinced the rice cooker is a bad idea.

But making your own onigiri is easy -- I do it for lunch at work all the time. Spam onigiri is especially easy, with the individually wrapped slices.

But I wouldn't want to chance those on a hot day in the parks. Fruit, or dried fish -- those would probably be OK.

OK, then. Rice cooker is out.

Plan B would be heating up pre-cooked rice in a microwave and then just rolling my own makizushi with the nori, vinegar and fish flakes. What, if any, resorts have microwaves in the rooms? I don't recall seeing them in the deluxe resorts...

The value suites have them.

When did that start? I stayed in PoP in September of 2010...no microwaves were there then. If you wanted a refrigerator that was too small to hold a sandwich, you could rent one for $10.00 per day.

Go to any off-site hotel and you get a good sized fridge and a microwave all included in your $50.00 per night charge. There are times that Disney is such a rip-off!

Not sure what you are talking about, but the value two room family suites have microwaves and refrigerators.

You can always make grilled cheese with an iron. You can pre-make them before you leave for your trip. Hopefully your flight or drive is not a long one. Throw them in the fridge when you check in. Wait - do the rooms have irons?

So you don't think running it in the bathroom would vent the rice cooking smell through the ventilation system?

Cooking food in a bathroom just seems like a bad idea.

You don't cook the fish flakes -- they go on dry, and the rice vinegar kind of soaks into them while they're wrapped up in the nori. So there's no smell of fish to speak of.

And it's not like I'd be doing this every day. But I find rice balls to be the perfect quick meal, and they aren't hard to make. Sheet of nori, blob of rice, sprinkle on the flakes and fold.

Carry in a bit of wax paper or a plastic bag and they're ready to eat when you are.

I know you really have your heart set on your sushi, but if you find that cooking the rice will be too much of a chore- how do you feel about udon or ramen noodles? You ought to be able to cook those up in your room as long as it still has the older coffee maker with the pot (not the new ones that only hold a cup). Easy to bring with you in your luggage and with a few simple extras thrown in would be great hot, or even cold (I love cold udon noodles on a hot day). Of course they're not as portable as your balls, but might be handy in your room.

That portable rice balls comment really cracked me up!!

We have this hot pot and bring it with us to WDW and it also travels with us on motorcycle trips.

Although it looks bulky, it really takes up very little space since you can pack things inside.

We cook Asian noodles, pasta and canned soup for dinner in it all the time and it works well.

The only downside is the temp control is essentially useless - it's either full throttle or nothing. Still, works just fine for boiling stuff, but you have to babysit it while it's on.

I do have a fuzzy logic Panasonic rice cooker at home, and I LOVE that thing!! Wish I could bring it with us on vacation. Gosh, it makes yummy rice and steamed veggies.

:rotfl2: so I'm sat here, reading about one man and his balls, a fridge not big enough to hold a sandwich, whether cooking in the bathroom is a good idea, this nifty gadget that can cook pasta, soup and steamed veggies either in your disney resort room or on a motorcycle .... all whilst eating a lovely sticky slice of chocolate cake.

What an enjoyable 10 minutes :thumbsup2

~LOL. This thread is so funny, I can barely type this! Once I made it to "favorite recipes for Disney Resort Rice", I was literally brought to tears from laughing so hard, gawsh that was funny! :rotfl2::rotfl::rotfl2:

~What? I don't believe it! :goodvibes

Absolutely the single oddest thread title I've ever read. :)
~I know it's hilarious, lol. :goodvibes

Cooking food in a bathroom just seems like a bad idea.
~That's super gross, which is kind of ironic because a kitchen is likely to carry more germs, lol. :goodvibes

Can't you just go get some sushi in Japan or at the Poly?
Of course not, that's just way too simple, lol. :goodvibes

I've done Wdw trips on a budget and even brought milk, cereal, bagels. but that's the extent of it! I'm on vacation I would rather bring things that are more portable like packs of crackers or fruit if it came down to it but seriously the dining plan really does save you money I keep my receipts and every trip I can tell you we saved like a couple hundred plus you gets snacks! If that isn't an option then carry some pre bagged snacks or budget $4 pp plus tax per day.Or even grab snacks that 2 can share to cut costs! Pecos bills has a huge delicious chicken wrap plenty big for two! Believe me, I understand saving $ I'm loosing my job at the end of Aug but I plan on enjoying my Wdw and dcl vacations to the fullest, I've been saving spending money for months!

Sad to say, you are not allowed to use your cool gadget at WDW:

Can food be brought into Walt Disney World Resort hotels and Theme Parks?

Guests are allowed to bring food items—such as snacks or foods that do not require heating—into any Walt Disney World Resort hotel. If you have food items that need to be refrigerated, please ask the front desk at your hotel to have a refrigerator placed in your room. Refrigerator may require an additional charge. Guests are allowed to bring food items—such as snacks or foods that do not require heating—into any Walt Disney World Theme Park. Inform a Security Cast Member of any food items when you enter the Theme Park. Learn more on our Special Dietary Requests page.
