...driving with her baby in her lap :sad2:

What a waste. Could you imagine not wanting to protect and keep your baby safe?

I can't find a link yet..it was on the Today Show.

I saw the picture at a glance. Do they know the car was actually moving? Or could she have been sitting there, waiting for someone?

They claim it was driving down some highway but who knows....I honestly didn't expect anything more out of her anyway to be honest!!

Whoa, seriously? Geez. Cause that's safe. She's getting worse and worse all the time. Kinda sad. But I suppose, what do you expect after she marries the worlds biggest loser.

Here is the story from People:

http://people.aol.com/people/articles/0,19736,1157153,00.html

On Monday, photos surfaced of Britney Spears driving her SUV in Malibu with her son, Sean Preston, sitting on her lap behind the wheel. The pictures raised obvious questions because her young son was not in a car seat.

A source close to Spears explains that the singer drove to Starbucks with her bodyguard in the passenger seat and son Sean in his car seat in the back. When the bodyguard went into the store to get the drinks, Spears took Sean out of his car seat and held him in her lap while she waited. Photographers approached the car, says the source, and became aggressive. Once her bodyguard climbed back into the car, Spears drove away while still holding her son.

Spears explains her actions in an exclusive statement to People magazine:

"Today I had a horrifying, frightful encounter with the paparazzi while I was with my baby. Because of a recent incident when I was trapped in my car without my baby by a throng of paparazzi, I was terrified that this time the physically aggressive paparazzi would put both me and my baby in danger. I instinctively took measures to get my baby and me out of harm's way, but the paparazzi continued to stalk us, and took photos of us which were sold to the media. I love my child and would do anything to protect him."

I like that she "would do anything to protect" him.

Except, apparently, put him in his car seat where he would be most protected. :confused3

So it's safer for him to be on her lap involved in a potentially high speed chase with the paparazzi rather then to hand the son over to the bodyguard, who is already in the backseat, to put in the car seat.

Well---she wasn't purposefully trying to endanger him. A big difference.

However--roll up the windows, lock the doors, put baby in the car seat--THEN to floor it.

I think raking her over the coals is a bit harsh for it though. It wasn't like she was going for a joyride or anything. She got scared and freaked.

How many new moms here did EVERYTHING perfectly? No you may not have forgotten to buckle in baby, but it happens. But I have been at a stop light with my toddler screaming--b/c oops--mom put her in the seat and in an absent minded moment, didn't buckle her in or the buckle was not snapped properly. So one count of error on both of those--yes my child could have died in an accident--but you bet your sweet bippy it didn't happen again.

I also notice the article doesn't say how long they drove this way--they could have driven for a minute or all the way home. They could have tried pulling over in a safe spot to get the baby secure.

now that they are all over the news with it--I'm sure Junior will be buckled in from now on regardless of the situation.

AND while driving a big ol honkin SUV!!!!!!!!! Tree huggers will rise up agin her now.

While not a fan of Britney, I don't think any of us have ever been in situations that she faces everyday from the papparazzi so it is difficult to judge how we would react. If she honestly felt that threatened by the media to bolt, who are we to judge? She may have done it instinctively to protect her baby. I just think it is hard to judge when none of us will ever have to face that type of situation.

I would hope that she normally employs the use of a infant car seat. Again, not a fan, but I think it is hard to imagine what her life (and other celebrities) must be like.

I find it really hard to moralistically spazz out at Britney over this one. Last night I was getting in my car in Manhattan and a homeless guy, clearly drunk, started to veer my way - he was maybe 10 feet away and approaching fast - I pulled out of the spot like a shot, didn't have my seat belt on, and the contents of my purse spilled all over the front seat floorboard. I can understand wanting to GO NOW.

I agree with you. Has anyone everyone seen pictures of the papparazzi? It is not one or two guys. It is a huge mob. She made a poor decision but who is to say those idiots weren't crowding around the backseat?

Unfortunately this girl lives by her own rules. Laws are for the little people! Marriage, oops I made a mistake last night, here's a Ferrarai (or whatever sportscar it was) please go away and pretend it never happened. Adultry (Kevin Federline was with someone else who was pregnant with his child when their relationship began), it doesn't matter because I'm in love and I want what I want. Money has bought her the right to buy her own morality!!!!!

while I have no experience with the paprazzi and I'm sure it could have been "scary" for her, there is no way she should have driven away with her baby on her lap! What if she hit another car or another car hit her in her rush to get away from the paprazzi?? Her son would likely have been killed by the airbag deploying. Incredibly stupid and irresponsible for her to do....the least she could have done was to hand her baby to the bodyguard to buckle him back in his seat. It's the paprazzi...they weren't there to rob her or carjack her...I doubt there was any threat to their lives

I don't doubt it was stupid--but there is this "Fight or flight" thing that people have. Forgive my lackluster explanation of it...but when you have the bejeezus scared out of you--sometimes we don't make *smart* decisions. We just need to get away b/c that seems to be the safest action.

the airbag could have just as easily deployed with a vehicle smashing her in the parking lot while she sat there in park.

Anything can happen at any time.

However---she's getting blasted as if she were out on a Sunday morning drive.

She made a mistake. I've seen worse (and reported it as well!).

I couldn't have said it better myself.

some of you are being way harsh. It also being reported that over 10 men with cameras had surrounded her car. How could see have gotten out the car to get the baby back int he seat, and with the press their hounding her and taking her and the babys pic. For all we know she took off and then when they finally left her alone she pulled over and pulled over and out the baby in the seat.
the point is we shouldnt judge
didnt realize their were so many perfect people here. Until we walk a mile in her shoes, hounded by the press daily and followed everywhere i think people should chill.

Without having all the facts and giving Britney the benefit of the doubt, here's how I see it. Let's say you're in a parking lot getting in your car with your child when a strange man approaches you. Would you not just get in and take off? I don't think you would take the time to buckle him in the car seat. I assumming that she just took off out of fear for her child and pulled over a block or two away to buckle him in. Was it the best thing to do? Probably not, but she was scared apparently. It's not like she was cruising down the highway. I'm willing to cut her some slack on this one.
