We're heading down to DVC 3/12 and plan to hang a USA flag from our balcony in support of our great free nation and in support of our fine military. We were wondering if anyone else many have plans to do the same.

God Bless America and Our Military

We're leaving tomorrow (off-site 3 nites) and checking into OKW on Sunday. I think I'll take our 4th of July flags (the ones we wave at our local parade) and hang them on our balcony! Glad you mentioned it:)

Remember, official protocol dictates that the field of stars (the blue part) is always at top left from the viewing side. So if you hang yours vertically be sure to do it in the proper manner!

When we get their we will fly our flag that was flow in Pearl Harbor over the Arizona Memorial in respect to our past and present hero's. The below link is the official Gift shop Pearl Harbor memorial, look for the book store. The flag you buy was flown over the memorial and you get a certificate with it too all at a very reasonable cost.

Thanks for the great idea.

We'll be at OKW for 8 days in April and our packing list now includes 1 flag for the balcony.

Our flag is packed and ready to go to BCV with us!!
DH loves this idea (you know those Marines!!!)

My packing list has also been ammended. Abeit for Dec.

WDWguru excellent point also remember to illuminate your flag or retrive it at sunset.

Thanks for the tip on hanging the flag correctly. This is one of the things I have learned from my husband, and it drives him crazy when it's wrong. Though, on the vertical hanging, I still have difficulty sometimes - which is the viewing side of a balcony - from the inside or from the outside? I guess I'd defer to outside, but that makes the flag look odd to me when I am in the room.

Quick funny story - my husband and I ran the Marine Corps Marathon this fall. At the finish there is a photographer snapping a quick photo of each runner with the finishing medal. The photographer had the flag backwards. The company got lots of feedback on that one when folks got their picture previews. I suspect they missed out on a few picture sales, as well. I guess not that many runners who had just finished the marathon noticed, so it did not get changed during the race.

Just goes to show that the flag hanging protocol is not really well known. Thanks again for the tip.

We'll pack the flag this summer.

Great idea! We'll be going down in August... the flags are ready to go too! Wouldn't it be wonderful if the war was over by then. Either way, I'm packing those flags!

OK not to sound unamerican but I believe that it is stated in our contracts that we can not hang anything on the balconies. I'm sure they actually meant swim wear and such hanging but please understand if they ask you to remove it.

However I do think it is a great idea!

Dan

P.S. If I am wrong on this I am sorry and someone please correct me.

We have hung Christmas lights on our balconey, as have others

Thanks for the post!

When we cruise on DCL, I have a small auto flag that I put on the verandah. DH and I are proud to be Americans and USAF veterans!

It is only to be displayed from sunrise to sunset unless it is lighted.

Just type in flag protocal or etiquette on your search function and it should bring up the 23 rules of flag protocal.

I feel a little uncomfortable about this because I just have this nagging feeling we are going to see posts about people who were asked to take their flags down by Disney.

That certainly could happen, and the CM's would be within the written rules to enforce it. But hopefully, they'll make an exception as they do for the Christmas decorations. The rule is obviously to keep things like towels and laundry from hanging off balconies.

It would be quite ironic if the flags had to be removed. Walt Disney himself was unabashedly patriotic....the Hall of Presidents is pretty good testimony to that.

If a CM asks you to take down the flag, you should turn around the current CM Reward progam, and ask him/her....."What would Walt do?". :)

Yeah, Granny - you tell them "What WOULD Walt do?"!!!!

Do you have any recommendations on how exactly to hang to flag from the balcony? How to attach it?

Thank you!

Just type in "flag etiquette" on your search engine and it should bring up what you need.

There are certain ways flags are to be hung from balconies and certain times they are to be flown at.
